Bad hard drive ???

I have a Sony T60 DirectTivo that originally came with one drive I upgraded it with a replacement 40GB and a second 80GB and I have saved the original 40GB drive, as I did a dd copy of the original drive.
It has worked flawlessly for about two and half years.
Now the T60 is stuttering and freezing during playback, and then will reboot.
It is also getting totally stuck several times during reboot.
From what I have read, I suspect I have a bad hard drive. When I leave it unplugged for several hours, and it is cold, it seems to work fine for a short while.
I would like to put in two 120GB drives and wondered, what my best path is ? I also have a image backup too.
What would be the easiest ?
Thanks in advance.

Start fresh with your old image backup.. It will prevent you from haveing a bad image if that hard drive was the culprit

I would think you could get a working backup off that set - it'll be pretty obvious if there's a problem. That would at least save your SP's etc. I'd be surprised if you could salvage the recordings, though.
