I've got a new 80 hour Series 2 to upgrade. I also own a couple of two year old Series 1's with hard drives that are showing signs of wearing out. Because I'd like my system rebuild to last as long as possible I've done some research in this forum on the issue of hard drive longevity.

One of the little gems that I managed to uncover was the role that shipping plays. As it turns out, a poorly packaged hard drive can sustain damage in shipping that may not show up for months.

It's also clear to me that some of the best deals available for hard drives sometimes involves dealing with an Internet based company who's idea of proper packaging is to toss the hard drive in a box with a few Styrofoam peanuts and call it good. It's not.

So, with this in mind I resolved to inquire about shipping methods before I placed my next order for any new hard drives. My plan is to buy from a vendor who uses something as close to a retail box as possible (hard drive nestled in a foam shell encased in a box.)

Today, I found the drive I was looking for at a price that seemed agreeable. So I sent my first inquiry:

How are these hard drives packaged for shipping?

I would stay away from the 7200 rpm if your looking for long life they get hot and there loud..

Newer 7200RPM drives don't seem to produce more heat or noise than the older 4500 or 5400 RPM drives. In fact the 120GB 7200 (actually a slightly older model than the current 120GB w/8mb cache but still sold by WD) put out less heat than the original Quantum drive that came in the TiVo. And I haven't noticed any more drive noise than before either. I don't personally care much for Maxtor drives than that's why I went with the 7200 WD drive. But now I also have two 80GB Maxtor drives looking for a good home. ;)

Just get a retail drive. They typically come packaged in a nice, cushioned box.

Circuit City is selling the 120GB WD for $160, free shipping, and a $60 rebate.

I ordered my two WD 120's from Dell and they were shipped in the actual box WD ships to Dell. It had room for 5 HD's in the box but only two slots were filled.

The price was pretty good as well if you check out places like techbargains, or fatwallet for coupons.

My unit does not run any hotter then when it had only the single 60 gig.
