24: Day 2 - 1 to 2 am <SPOILERS>

Well... no spoilers from me yet, since I haven't seen it. Surprised no thread was started yet...
Per AICN - this was another 3 out of 5 star episode (like the previous week), so my guess is that it was more filler.
6 more to go...
Posted by: bdowell
There was actually quite a bit of activity this week, but also many more questions started.
Posted by: Graymalkin
Six more to go until... what? What could be more nerve-wracking than trying to stop a nuclear weapon from devastating Los Angeles? Only thing that would work for me is a coup d'etat of the United States government, but the bad guys seem more focused on manipulating Palmer into doing what they want, rather than replacing him.
At least Kim's ridiculous saga is over, and she can just sit around and mope over her boyfriend breaking up with her. Who wants to bet he's lost both legs?
Once again, the show seems to have peaked too soon, and they're just filling time until the last episode's denouement.
Posted by: Family
So just out of curiosity........... how long does it take to be taken to the hospital.... have your leg amputated...... and then be able to lie on the bed (without seemingly being medicated) and coherently have a conversation???
Posted by: zaknafein
Well, this episode we saw the most unbelievable, implausable thing the show has done thus far.
A democratic President watching Fox News. :)

I thought this episode was better than last weeks actually.
Kims story had alot of "closure" .. accept I think the "father of the lil girl" will cause some difficulties still.
I like the fire-fight between Jack & the "follow-up" crew <is that who the spec. ops. guy said they were>. I liked that Marie shot that guy ... way cool!
I thought Palmer (the actor> did a terific job last night.
Tony seems to have forgiven Jack and will work w/ him.
Good Episode!!! IMHO ... NEXT WEEK LOOKS LIKE IT"LL ROCK!!!

No, I think they're trying to destroy him. I think the Marietta business was staged to create a problem for Palmer (how many Georgia racists get out of bed at 4:00 AM to stage impromptu demonstrations?), just as I think everything that's happened this season has been part of a coup attempt. And I think that's starting to emerge; I suspect that the plot will become more text than subtext in the very near future.
(And, from my relatives who live there, it's pronounced "Muh-RETT-uh"!)

I hope so because the storyline will be stupid if different. The east coast would really be sleeping through this. That's why I think it's ridiculous anyway. Imagine waking up to all out war with three Middle Eastern countries when you went to bed with no evidence. No president would act this fast.

Good point! By contrast, the other events seems downright believable. Except ...
One of the things that still irks me is this need to have every other character constantly reinforce the notion that if we don't attack in three hours, all will be lost. OK, this is a real-time show, and to keep the tension level high, a deadline needs to be set. Fine, go ahead then. But the screenwriters seem to think that if they repeat it often enough, we'll believe it. Wrongo! It's no less believable now than it was two episodes ago. Please, give it a rest!

I really enjoyed this episode. I'm glad they tied up the Kim story line and I was surprised that they tied up the memory card story line with Jack. When they went to that 4 seperate screens after jack said "I don't know what to do" I thought for sure they'd drag that out till next week.
great episode.

24 is geting SO unreal.
What, no "Rush to war" whining in this rapid turn of events?
I do like the Palmer character and the actor. He, his space alien assistant and Jack are the reasons to keep watching.
I'm also kinda disapointed that there was no mega catfight at CTU HQ.

I think the whole rioting thing is so stupid. People only riot when their favorite team wins/loses the championship. :)
But seriously, once the government admitted that the bomb went off and had handled the situation by blowing up the Panament Valley or Death Valley (I live near there so I took this personally) then why would people riot?
After 9/11 only a small number of people harmed Middle Easterners (and the occasional Sikh) not a bunch of people attacking an entire neighborhood.

The Hollywood view of non-NY or non-LA America is a buncha right wing rednecks ready to riot and kill opressed peoples at the slightest provocation. The Hollywood view also invaryably portrays high echelon US military officers as constantly plotting to overthrow the Constitutional government. Once you go along with this, 24 makes sense. Enjoy!

But this wasn't a spontaneous riot. It was part of a plan to overthrow the Palmer Administration. At least, that's what I'm assuming.
And I wouldn't be surprised if people in the show start asking the very same questions...after all, pretty soon they have to start figuring out what's really going on.

Was that Kim escaping with Jack and the commando? "I can shoot a gun (but I'll wait until I am within a nanosecond of being killed to acutally use it)".
Who didn't figure out that "inside" meant inside the dude's body? I was suprised Jack didn't instantly figure it out before seeing the Xray.
Like others have mentioned the plot needs to have more going for it. The threat of a nuclear bomb killing 2 million people was pretty intense. Tough act to follow.
We haven't seen pop Warner for a few episodes. Wonder what he's up to. Also, I though the pres was about to address the nation but he never did.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
I can understand why somebody who has never killed somebody might hesitate...
And I can understand why the President would wait for the nation to wake up before he addressed it!

A couple of things...
- Did anyone see the promo that was airing for this episode earlier in the day with the Michelle Branch song? All about how "they were brought together under the most unlikely of circumstances. And now, they're going to be torn apart" all about Jack and the sister? Romantic-y and stuff, seemed totally nuts to me.
- What was Palmer talking about when he said how he could use the Marines and the Navy but not the Army? I thought only the National Guard and the Navy (the Coast Guard, anyway) could act on American soil?
- The story is getting really, really soap-ish to me. I dunno, I knew from the moment the boyfriend started talking that his leg was gone (although I thought it was both of them). I can't stand Tony anymore (not that I was ever much of a fan of him, but at least he was bearable), and the commando...of COURSE he had to die without being able to say the whole sentence. After all, that's what movies do for bad suspense. Could anyone really be surprised that he didn't get the whole thing out? And Kim...can she please be shot? PLEASE?? "You used to be a murder suspect, but now you're miraculously cleared."
It's still a good show, it is, but it's really, really taken a turn in the past few weeks I don't like at all.

One possibility: Palmer's inexperienced, under pressure, and got his facts wrong.
Another possibility: The script writers are inexperienced, under pressure, and got their facts wrong! :D

I thought he said that he couldn't use the Navy.
Posted by: efilippi
There are many links that explain this, just give it a google. But basically it appears that the original law was added to an appropriations bill, back in the Civil war days and it outlawed the use of the Army in domestic situations. Then the Air Force was added to the original language in 1956, I don't know why. And according to one source "Although the Navy and Marine Corps are not included in the Act, they were made subject to it by DOD regulation in 1992.
National Guard is a state thing, not federal, so they are unaffected.
It also appears that the restriction against use of Army is subject to being overridden, change, loophole, etc.

Wait, didn't the accident in the truck happen just before dusk? It's been about 7 hours since they got Kim's boyfriend and took him off to have his leg chopped. Inconceivable!

When the memory chip was found to be inside the guy, I had the funny idea that in the next episode they'll find out that it got wiped by the shocks given to him by the doctor. It didn't look like it was exactly that well protected while it was in his body. :D

Does anybody really believe that Kim's story is over? This feels like the setup to another "just when you thought it was safe" scenario, of the kind this show loves so much. I think they wrapped up the murder thing (way too neatly, BTW) just so Kim can walk free and immediately be kidnapped by the villains of the hour.
However, I do think that Miguel is done; it's just too perfect a way to end it with him. Once again, someone else pays for Kim's stupidity. BTW, I was sure he was gonna be paralyzed from the waist down; I guess a missing limb is more visually dramatic, though.

I still can't understand why Tony is being such a dumb arse about this whole thing. His job is gather intel, so why would he blindly dismiss the option of a doctored recording? He's becoming a real pain... I guess some ppl are just not meant to be in control.
Kim... omg... the only way I'd be glad to see her in this show is either on a very graphical gruesome shot in the head, or splashing in a pool of clear lube wearing nothing but a white shirt.
Plus... the time continuity is all foobared, amputating a leg in a couple of hours? Deploying stealth bombers in a couple of hours? Etc...
Anywhooooo... somehow I'm still watching :)

The Coast Guard has never been part of the Navy to my knowledge. I seem to remember that it was part of the Department of Commerce or the Interior and then Transportation. Now it is part of Homeland Security.

Thought exactly the same thing... maybe Jack will escape and give the chip to the CTU computer guy to try to recover something.

I think it has to be a given that Kim will walk out of the police station right into the arms of the father who the police made very clear was still at large.
We can only hope he will do the same to her that he did to his wife.
If there is nothing wrong with the memory chip, then we will be spending the remaining hours trying to unravel the government conspiracy.

I'm hoping for a crossover with Marshall from Alias. ;)
Jack Bauer: "The chip is wiped out, who can help?"
Marshall: "Um, hi guys, I'm Marshall from SD6, well I used to be from SD6, now I work for the CIA. You see, SD6 was this evil organization that I worked for, but I didn't know it was evil, so then the CIA takes it down, did I mention that I didn't know it was evil, and so, like now I work for the CIA."
Jack Bristow: "MARSHALL!!"
Marshall: "Um right, sorry, so I can just use a cross-crypto-reverse cypher to detect the residual imprint on the memory chip. I just so happen to have this tie tack, well it looks like a tie tack, but really its a corrupted memory recovery tool, see, <beep> there ya go!"

Heh. I can just see the writer in his 20th Century Fox cubicle, waiting for the fat greasy-haired guy with coke-bottle glasses to finish fixing his computer...

Or wiped out by the X-Ray they took, which allowed him to see that the chip was in the dead body.
Don't X-Ray's do nasty things to computer chips? Moreso than electric shocks? Or maybe not.
Tech note: whatshername (the space alien) using a Handspring Treo to give whathisname (the defense secretary? the old bald guy) the phone number to CTU, via infrared I assume.

Not to mention the logistical problems of getting all those aircraft carriers and submarines upriver to Marrietta, Georgia.

Yeah I saw this promo and I was actually yelling at the TV. That was the stupidest thing they could have promoted. It was like those two have been dating for years and they were being torn apart by impossible circumstances. Give me a break! Marketing actually should watch a show before they decide to make things up like this.
