American Idol 4/8 - 4/9 (SPOILERS)

What, no one started a thread yet?
Last night was more entertaining than the past couple weeks. I thought Clay, Ruben, Trenyce, and Kim L did the best. I don't know what Simon was thinking dissing Trenyce like that, her performance was excellent, and when you combine her talent with her look I think she's the best woman left in the competition. Finally they all bashed Carmen, she's never been any good. I thought Josh was horrible, but somehow he received praise once again. Kim C was decent and looked good, as usual. Rickey was aight, but I wasn't really feelin it, dawg. It seems like Ruben is definitely the favorite of the judges to win it. He looked much better without the 205 shirt. Clay has his work cut out for him if he wants to beat Ruben in the finals.

I wasn't impressed with Carmen or Kimberly Locke. While I give credit to Carmen for at least doing an upbeat song, she really didn't nail it IMO. And Rickey? If there's any justice in the world, he'll go home this week.
I don't know if it was just me, but the judges seemed entirely too nice last night, Simon included. Every time I thought he was going to rip someone apart because of some pitch problems or poor song selections, his comment would be "good job".
Posted by: WinBear
I thought Josh was good, but oversang the song at points.
Trenyce actually improved.
My only complaint is that too often the performances are technically excellent, but completely passionless. Clay and Kim L. fall into this category. I'm definitely ready for the "judges selection" show so the judges can stop complaining about song selection.

I think Kim C., Carmen, and Treneyce were the bottom 3 last night. Kim C. sang ok but I give her big props for trying to break out of her 1 tone voice to try a song with some highs in it.
Has anyone ever noticed that the judges (especially Simon) rip on all the contestants for picking ballads, but almost everytime one of them picks an upbeat song they get ripped to shreds.
Hopefully Carmen makes it, but I fear she is gone. :(
Posted by: walters
What was the theme, anyway? I missed the first half (SP priority mistake).
Posted by: dschwab
The theme was #1 songs, they could pick a song that was #1 on the Billboard chart at any time.

Ruben was awesome of course, the best, but I really liked Josh tonight...he has just a great country voice.

I actually thought Carmen did a good job last night...but neither the judges nor many other people think so. And I am not a big fan of hers either.
I am tierd of hearing the same type of song over and over from Ruben. I think sometimes he picks easy songs to sing. Like last week and I think the week before too. IMHO I don't think he is that great, honestly. I never liked him since day one though.
I am a huge fan of Clay, and I think overall he would be a great American Idol.
I think Josh is decent. And his pulled off his song pretty good last night. It wasn't great, but he managed to do pretty well with it.
I also thought Trenyce did a great job with her song too. And I am not a huge fan of her either.

I am done with Clay. He has gotten rather boring. Carmen wasn't very good, but I support her decision to try to sing a good song. When you have 1,000s of great songs to sing why would you pick Celine Dion?

I'm bored of Ruben... he just makes me yawn!!!
Carmen sang an upbeat song (and my favorite at the time)... She's got a unique sound.. so it won't appeal to the masses. However, at least she did something fun!!!
Trenyce did great.. I'm not sure what the gripe was with the judges.
Kim L... not her best.
I still think Clay is great. Tho I do wish he'd try something a bit upbeat.
Strange how Simon said how good he was, even tho it was similar to last week's style and last week he criticized him.

Yeah I agree with a lot of what you said.
Interested to see what next week's topic will be.

Josh did have a great country voice. However, he doesn't do pop well, and the goal of the contest is to find the next pop star. So - he might be in trouble there, unless he can find a way to moderate the country sound like the "crossover artists" like Shania et. al.
Carmen still has a horrible problem with vibrato, or at least she did last night. She needs to find a way to sing without the vibrato if she wants to make it as a singer. I had an opinion about her singing last night, and I'll give the cleaned up version - it sounded like she was singing while standing on one of those paint shakers.
I dunno. I don't see the massive appeal both Ruben and Rickey. Neither of them are all that spectacular, yet people seem to love em both. I don't get it.
Clay - ouch, man, his performance was only OK last night, and when his performance wasn't up to par, you could see how rigid he is on stage - absolutely no stage presence. I think this might possibly be one of the performances that does him in ultimately.
When they first said Kim L was going to do "My Heart Will Go On," I was thinking that it could go one of two ways: really, really bad or really, really good. I was wrong - Kim L found a nice, safe, middle ground, but ultimately, it didn't do much for me.
Same with Kim C's "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)." It was... nice. Very... nice. (In case you're wondering, that's not really a compliment.) I don't think it was all that bad of a song choice, but it didn't exactly enthrall me.
Trenyce was the third performer to put in a very safe performance. I think it was somewhere between Simon's opinion and the rest of the judges, but it wasn't a winning performance either.
I guess song choice was rather interesting... they had how many number 1 songs to pick from, and they all picked fairly boring songs. "Safe" songs is another way to put it, which probably results in the "nice" opinion of many of the performers last night. I'm sure they've had some really rocking songs to pick from... I think that would've interested me, to see them up there really enjoying themselves, rocking out and bringing the audience into it.
Posted by: CrZyMnKy
I don't think we are really the best performances for any of them lately. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have to be doing this week in and week out and yet trying to enjoy every moment of it, esp. in that mansion.
As for Clay, I think it is tough to go first. Usually the first person up doesn't get good responses from the judges.
I think/hope in the next few weeks their performances will pick up again.
Posted by: okleydokley
I just don't get the judges.
I thought Carmen was terrible the first few weeks when Simon was saying she was the best. Now I think she is much better (maybe not the best) and he cuts her to shreds.
Same with Trenyce, as she gets better Simon says she is worse. (I think this might have to do with her smoking gun past. Simon might not want to sign someone that has skeletons in the closet)
Why does Simon keep saying good things about Ricky? I swear that any song Ricky sang would not last on my radio more then 5 seconds. His voice is like fingernails on a chalk board. PLEASE, PLEASE vote him off the island!!!
I think Joshua sounds terrible trying to make pop songs into country songs. (He might have already given up on the contest though, hoping he will get signed by a country label instead)
I guess I agree with Simon (to some extent) on Clay though. He sounds great, but he sings every song exactly the same. It gets a bit old.
I also agree that Ruben is the best (although all his songs sound about the same also) and he should (and probably will) win.
Posted by: tonyoci
Remember that this weeks and last weeks votes are added.
Clay has got boring, before he started singing I said that he needs to do something different and he did not. I could not understand Simon's change from last week to this week, last week he said Clay was terrible this week he was great yet he was much the same.
I like Reuben, Trenyce has lost something with me but I cannot explain what, I did not like Josh, Rickey did a good song (I think they have determined he is such a nice guy that they find it tough to be mean to him), Kim C picked the wrong song, Kim L was boring.
Earlier I thought the quality of this group was very high but they really have not shown much improvement in my opinion.
Reuben not wearing his 205 shirt was a good move.
Lionel Ritchie was a decent judge, at least he had watched the show and was willing to give an opinion.

I fear that Carmen is gone this week. Not that she doesn't deserve it. I root for her because she seems to be such a sweet, adorable girl. But, simply put, she aint got it. There are others who need to go, but she stands out as the worst. She just doesn't belong there.
We'll see tonight.
Posted by: jsmeeker
I drove by the CBS studio shortly after the show was finished. Saw people leaving with signs and all that.
Carmen was decent. Funny how they ripped into her a bit for pikcing a Blondie song. Thought it was wrong for her since she (Carmen, that is), is a nice, sweet girl. :). She sure is cute.
Kimberly Caldwell singing Bray Adams? Why? Bad song choice. But she looked GREAT.
Rueben sure gets the crowd into it. He is goign to be tough to beat. I like that he dropped the 205 shirt.
Rickey was OK. But I still say he needs to go.
I missed Clay, so I can't comment on him.
Good song choice for Josh, Fits him well. Too bad it's not "pop", because he can't possibly win.
I just hope Carmen and Kimberly C. stick around. If Kimberly L Rickey, go, I'll be happy.

Actually, I thought the song was fine. She, however, can't sing without sounding like she's standing on an active fault line her voice vibrates so bad.

It's "Bryan Adams" actually.
And I don't get how it was a bad song choice. The judges said it was a bad song choice too... what was so bad about it? Did they think it was just out of her singing range or what? It sounded OK to me... it was just a rather boring song, like so many of the night.

My guesses were COMPLETELY off last week, but here goes again (with my opinion in parenthesis):
SAFE:
-Ruben (Looked good, sang well as always - I'd buy an album of his)
-Clay (He's gotta do SOMETHING uptempo! Right now, I think he could be a very successful Broadway star, but not a pop star! Great voice, but needs to be SOMETHING more...)
-Josh (After not being in the bottom three for his HIDEOUS "Celebration-as-sung-by-a-drunk-frat-boy" last week, I'm convinced that he's pretty safe. It helps to be a Marine and cute, I guess. Besides, he was pretty good this week)
MIDDLE GROUND:
-Kim L. (I didn't think she was great, and she was bottom three last week, but the judges seemed to like her)
DANGER ZONE:
-Rickey (I didn't think he was that bad, but I'd still put him near the bottom)
-Kim C. (I'll give her credit for trying something new, but she didn't pull it off)
-Trenyce (I thought she was excellent, but I thought so last week too, and she was in the bottom two)
-Carmen (I think she took a step back from last week's better performance. Didn't Debbie Gibson have some number 1 hits? She should have done a Debbie Gibson song. "Oh... Only in my dreams... As real as it may seem....")
My guess for bottom three? Rickey, Kim C, and Carmen, with Carmen getting voted off.

I don't type well.. :p
I think the song was too "soft" and "quiet" for Kimberly's voice.

I thought that overall the performances this week were not very impressive.
In my mind, Josh went from worst to best this week. He didn't have the greatest sound, but he absolutely put on the best show.
Lots of people here were dogging Ricky, but I just don't get it. I thought he did a very nice job this week. I actually agree with Simon that he sounded better Lionel Ritchie did singing this song.
Clay did a good job. It was nice, and I still like him best overall, but the memory of that Elton John song is what's pushing him forward in my mind. He needs a couple more blockbuster performances like that to win the whole enchilada.
I really want Ruben to show me something more with his voice -- nothing he sings does much to exercise his range or power. Frankly, at this point it appears that he doesn't have much of either. On the other hand, he's got a very pleasant, smooth sound and a nice stage presence, but I sure would like to see him try to show something more. I think of all the competitors, he has, by far, taken the least risk and shown the least range and definition in his voice.
Kim Locke disappointed me -- not with her voice, which was sensational, but instead with the section of the song that she actually sung. If she had sung through the bridge and note change into the high part of the song, she could really have demonstrated that she deserves to advance to the top 3. As it is, she did a really nice job, but people will need to hear more to get past the "fat chick" stigma.
Trenyce -- I don't understand what people see in her. She runs from high spot to high spot with not a lot of quality in between. Her voice just doesn't have a nice finish to me, especially when compared to the top guys in the competition like Ruben or Clay, and at her worst she sounds positively screetchy.
Carmen -- she's no Blondie. Kim C. could do that song justice, but Carmen can't.
Kim C. -- love that outfit, but that was a spectacularly awful rendition of a pretty nice Bryan Adams song. The knock on her has been that she has been too complacent in her song selection. Well, she wasn't complacent this week, but I don't think her gamble paid off at all.
For my overall ranking, it goes in the order listed above. I'm surprised that I have all the guys over all the girls this week, as I've never felt that way before, and last year it was completely reversed. Bizarre. I expect three girls in the bottom three this week and Carmen to get voted off.
Posted by: Skittles
Goodbye Rickey.
I totally agree with the 3 bottom picks. Carmen and Kim C are coming soon, I suspect.
Posted by: Lori
So it was Rickey? My channel ran over and I missed the last couple minutes.
Posted by: TomK
I disagree with Kimberly Locke getting placed in the bottom three. Her voice is too good for that. Josh needs to go next week please. :)
Yes, the program ran over a couple minutes and the selection was made there. It's time to finally pad American Idol.

Rickey is gone. The final 3 consisted of both Kimberly's, and Rickey.

That was weird about running over that 5 minutes. Luckly I was watching live (Imagine that) so I ran into the bedroom to see who was voted out. Can't miss a minute of Angel :D
BTW Glad to see Ricky go. Hope Carmen is next.

It wouldn't have gone over if they hadn't foisted that ridiculous "Get out of my Dreams, get into my Car," video. It was, as someone quoting Simon might say, dreadful. ;)

Well I was sad to see Ricky go. I know he wouldn't have won the American Idol title or anything, but I just liked him as a whole. And I though the video about it was sweet and sincere. A bit sad too, but he came off as being a great person.
Posted by: bdowell
Rickey was nice guy, that was obvious. Having said that, his vocals were so irritating, that like Corey (who thankfully got himself booted for stupidity), I was really glad to see him gone.
I could have settled for seeing Kim C. gone, as she really stunk it up this week, and unfortunately is showing she's very much a one trick pony. If it's not a Melissa Etheridge tune, or perhaps some Janice Joplin, I just don't see her doing well.
I expect Kim C. will be bottom of the barrel next week, probably sharing bottom 3 honors with Kim L. again, and possibly, just possibly sharing that with Trenyce.
I actually think Trenyce is getting better, and Kim L. has performed well on the last few songs she's done.
If Carmen hadn't picked such a bad tune for herself this week, she'd have done better. She still may stick around a while just riding on cute blonde looks.
Clay is starting to look a lot like Kim C. as well - no variation in his singing. He is getting a lot of underdog votes, but I don't see him knocking Ruben off the top spot, and he may yet fall out of the top three.
Josh and Carmen may wind up fighting for the country music fan votes. It'll be interesting to see whether they both get to stick with primarily country, or have to change things up more.

If you think Clay has no variation in his singing...then Ruben is even worse. Clay has at leats sung 1 or 2 up beat songs. Ruben sings the same damn thing over and over again. He can get the award for making a Love Songs at Night CD.
Posted by: MauriAnne
Was it just me, or did Clay and Carmen look entirely too chummy tonight? They seemed to be hanging all over each other.
And what was with Kelly Clarkson's hair?
Posted by: tonyoci
How come Rickey had a video made where he says goodbye. Do you think they ALL make that movie every week or did they make it sometime at the beginning. Just wondering.
Sad to see Rickey go, I would like to have seen Kim C go.
Not that he will but if Josh won what would happen to his singing career or his marine career.
I think when they get to this stage at least 5 of them know they are not going to win so getting voted out is not as big a deal as it was at the beginning of the finals when you lost the chance to be on TV.
There have been rumors about Carmen and Clay on other websites for a couple of weeks. Did a search but could not come up with any quickly.
T
Posted by: TomK
I think they have all made a 'goodbye' statement that gets made into a 'goodbye' video for the appropriate week.
Posted by: NatasNJ
Josh should not be on this show. He is a country singer not a pop idol.
Good country singer. But not the American Idol.
Ruben & Clay sing the same song EVERY week. Making me sick.
Not to mention Clay was wearing WAY too much makeup.
Kim C & Carmen are sticking around based soley on looks. They both are ok singers but nothing great.
I really think no one deserves to win. They are all boring ballad singers. I have to give props for Carmen trying to sing something different. Even if it came off as bad as it did.
And is it me or does EVERYONE not let Simon say ANYTHING. Everytime he starts to say ANYTHING, the other judges, crowd, etc... start yelling and you can't even let Simon say anything. Simon is the SHOW! Without him it would be Nashiville Star.
Thank goodness Rickey is gone. His voice was horrible.

Who says a country singer can't be America's Idol? Country is getting very popular these days (at least pop Country). Obviously the voters like him, so I don't think it's fair that you say he should be kicked off just because he's country. If America doesn't like it, they can not vote for him.

I agree!!!:)

Clay has got a much better voice and vocal range than anyone on the show there. He does not belong on the American Idol stage though. Get that boy a job in theater! He could be a leading man on Broadway in a couple years of understudy...
I think Kelly was going for the Drrrty look last night...
blech. It is funny that she wouldn't have had a chance against this years crowd...

Speaking of country, what was up with the dig against Nashville Star? Frankly, the performers on Nashville Star run circles around the American Idol folks. (Of course, most of the Nashville Star folks are professional performers with a few more years under their belt...)

Only reason Country boy is still around is because he is a marine and we are in midst of a war. He will be gone soon enough...
Posted by: mrcoaster
I've got an idea for a theme for next week's show. How about nobody's allowed to sing a drippy boring FM-lite ballad? You can sing anything mid-temp or up-tempo. No ballads. Ballads will equal immediate banishment.
Carmen is exempted from this rule. Carmen is asked to record her performance in a studio where they can touch it up and fix it and make it sound ok....then she can lip-sync it on stage for the show.

Well she was singing a song that Xtina decided not to include on her last album. Can you say "bad hair extensions?"
The song itself was not as bad as the other drek we have heard from her, but it sounded annoyingly familiar to me. The bassline sounded like an old Lenny Kravitz song, and the lyrical hook reminded me of something I have heard before too (Fiona Apple perhaps - not sure). Either way it sounded somewhat recycled/reheated to me, but still far better than that ghastly clip from the Kelly and Justin movie.

I absolutely agree with you. The whole competition is generic. Everyone sounds the same (or tries to). I've seen other comments here that they should have immediate disqualification if they sing a ballad. I agree here too, but I would take it one step farther: Immediate disqualification if they sing any R&B tunes.
Let's shake it up a bit, there's more to music than R&B and ballads.
Posted by: eric_mcgovern
Here come my 2 cents....
1) Ruben and Clay sound the same every week. I just don't get Ruben, I don't think he is really that good, and the 205 thing is wearing thin. Clay sounds like he should be on broadway.
2)Trenyce has it, I think she just got jolted by the "I have been arrested" news. In the wild card show, she came out of nowhere and blew me away. I haven't seen her really pull it out like she did that night.
3)The two blond's simply can't sing. They are a good act for sure, but can't sing worth a darn. Only reason they are still there, they aren't too hard to look at.
4)The other Kim should get the "most improved award". She is probably the best singer in the bunch, but she doesn't have the look. That is what hurts her.
5)The country marine. He is a good performer, probably the best out of the bunch. He really gets into the music and gets the crowd going. Problem is, he is country. I respect his performing ability, but just don't like the music or the way he sings it. With country it seems you either hate it or love it.
6)Simon is trying a bit too hard with Kelly Clarkson. One of the reasons she won was due to her cutesy looks and bubbly personality. She isn't a "bad girl". That song she sang last night was horrible, and the fact they had dancers just made it laughable. Everyone knows Tamyra is leagues above her in signing, so dont' focus on that, focus on what won her the competition.

"Amazed" was a country hit for Lonestar before they recorded another arrangement with electric guitars and a stronger drum beat and released it on the pop charts. It hit #1 on both charts, IIRC.

Rickey deserved to get the boot. Hopefully, Kimberly L. will be the next one, but I fear it will be one of the attractive blondes that goes next. :(
Kelly Clarkson really didn't look good last night. What was up with the hair?? I could say what she looked like, but this is a family forum. ;)
I agree with Turtleboy. The Ford commercial was dreadful. Even the super-cute Carmen couldn't save it.

I think Reuben is great and does show a variation in style.
I think Josh's problem is that he switched to country mid stream, I doubt he would have got this far as a country singer (right or wrong). In the UK this show is called Pop Idol and that is what they are aiming for, that's why Josh cannot win, Simon's label is a pop label. Plus he looks ugly as heck when he sings.
Maybe to avoid ballads they should have a thrash metal week or a beats per minute greater than 110 week. Of course when they did sing disco they were not that good.
Usually people do not know the theme for the next week until the east coast show airs. You can figure out the celebrity judge by looking for an old star making a comeback who has an album out soon.

If you're saying that because you like eye-candy, then I can understand where you are coming from. I disagree with your criteria, but I can respect the opinion. If, on the other hand, you think Kim C. or Carmen have outsung Kim L., then you are flat-out tone deaf. It's not even close.
Personally, I would prefer the contest to be judged more on talent than on beefcake or cheesecake.

I am so with jsmeeker.. The blondes need to stay. They are hot. And if I am going to have to watch horrible singing. (yes they are all boring and bad in my opinion) I would rather watch hot chicks do it than a 300+ pound man or a scrawny white guy that everytime someone comments on his singing they say, "how is that coming out of you?"
Plus I like Kim C Style. And Carmen's attempt at a NON-ballad songs scored huge with me. At least they are mixing it up with them good looks...

eye candy is part of today's Pop Star, especially females. It's the reality of the business. And yes, eye candy is why I want Kimberly C. and Carmen to last as long as possible. I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I am trying to picture Ruben trying to belt out a speed metal number. That would be priceless.
They seriously should do something to ban all the ballads. Metal, hip hop, or even techno would be fantastic. Of course it will never happen....and none of the judges would understand the genre....
(Outspoken) guest judges that come to mind: Jello Biafra, Dweezil Zappa, Eminem, Snoop, Richard James...oh man, those would make some great TV!

Dave Mustaine, Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson. Jello Biafra's still around?

With the popularity of American Idol and the popularity of hip hop, they should do a rap version of American Idol. Call it American Emcee or something. The guest judges (Eminem, Snoop, Busta Rhymes, etc.) would be much more entertaining than Lamont from Motown. They could alternate between the solo style of American Idol and the battle style of one emcee against another. Rap music makes more sense for this type of show than pop does, since rapping is already almost always done to a pre-recorded instrumental track (i.e., vinyl record). Hmm, maybe on UPN or the WB. :D

I said the same thing several weeks ago.. if they just had a rap genre with Eminem and the like, the show would be very entertaining that night. :)

It would be fun to see how Clay would make a rap song sound like that same old ballad he sings every week.

Entertaining, yes. A fair judge of singing talent, no.
IMHO, rap is a totally different musical expression than singing. It would be like asking them to all play the harmonica one week. Now, I am certainly not deriding rap, just pointing out that it requires totally different skills than singing.
Take someone with a powerful, flexible singing voice (like Anne Lennox or Whitney or Chaka Khan) and ask them to pull off some of the rap songs from billboard. It would be a novelty.

Fair enough. I think Simon agrees with you.

Nah, they can't have these singers rap, that would be ridiculous. You might as well have them act or do spoken word. Other than stage presence these skills share little in common.

The rap thing has been done. MTV and Puffy tried it a few months back. It was more of a reality show like Survivor. They didn't perform in front of live crowds which would have been cool. Instead, they showed them fighting and crying...and fighting...and crying...and fighting. I had to stop watching when one of the contestants found out that her sister had been found murdered in a garbage can. Too sad to continue watching.

as long as they last longer than Kimberly L, and Josh, I'll be happy.
Seriously, the show is about finding a pop star that will sell albums. Kimbely C. has a better chance than selling more than Kimberly L. Course , Ruebn (or Clay) could probably sell more than either.

That was Making The Band II. Totally different show, nothing like American Idol. In fact, I think the first version of Making The Band "made" a boy band (in other words, pop music), and was nothing like American Idol. The Making the Band shows are more focused on the interactions of the contestants, with much less focus on their performances. No live broadcasts, no studio audience, no voting by viewers, none of that.

Ryan Seacrest was talking today about how he wants to do something to make sure the show doesn't go over next time so that people with TiVo don't lose the end of the show.

I liked the "RUUB205" license plate on the car, etc.

If this is the number one show in America then why the hell did that commercial look like something on my local cable access channel.
That's cool Seacrest is down with TiVo.
