Suggest some Anime similar to Cowboy bebop please.

I haven't been too crazy about most anime I've seen, too many big eyed teenagers agonizing over the girl they love while fighting in giant robots. But being a big sci-fi fan, I kept trying out stuff. Finally I hit upon the Cowboy Bebop series on cartoon network adult swim and was big time hooked. I've seen every episode plus the movie and now I need another fix of something similar. I once read that the story of a bounty hunter with an oddball crew was very similar to another anime series, and most anime fans thought Cowboy Bebop was a rip-off of this series, until they actually watched it. I have no idea what this series is, but I bet someone here does.

By the way, has anyone gotten the 'anime/movie' wishlist to actually pickup anything? Mine never finds squat.

Thanks

My husband tells me that one of the series that Cowboy Bebop has been accused of ripping off is Lupin. I think it's also on TOON.

We like Inuyasha very much. There aren't any robots that I have seen, but there are some huge-eyed teens mooning over one another. :)

Mine has not picked up the first thing. I have a wishlist set up for anime (can't remember the specifics that I used) and I check it once a week to record stuff.

I believe Showtime (not the main channel) has anime on every friday night/saturday morning. I picked up Armitage: Dual Matrix on that channel and it was very good!

I think Cowboy Bebop is as good as anime can get. Great characters, animation, plots, music, and dubbing.

I recommend the movie Patlabor 2. It is a robot anime, but it has a very interesting and realistic Tom Clancy type plot.

I am lookng forward to Escaflowne which was done by a lot of the same crew as Cowboy Bebop.

You can find more discussion of Anime than you would ever want to read in

You might want to check out Cowboy Bebop, The Movie:

You check out Trigun on Cartoon Network? It's not as serious as Cowboy Bebop...well frankly it's a lot sillier, but the guy does make some serious points later. I hear it gets more serious later in the series.

Another giant robot type series with big eyed teens that's supposed to be a little more mature in flavor, is rahXephon. I have not seen it yet...the DVDs are coming out now and may be available from amazon, and the reviews are pretty positive.

RahXephon disc #1 is available now (it's sitting on my shelves now).

The problem with entering 'anime fandom' via Cowboy Bebop is that it's not like most anime (in my opinion). It's more western (as in western hemisphere not the US west) in its flavor than most. That plus it features character designs unlike a large amount of anime. There are people I know that watch CB then watch other anime then complain about things like hair color, eye size, etc, etc, etc. Of course, CB also has a killer soundtrack that will leave many finding other series lacking (unless, of course, they also feature music by Ms. Kanno)

Lupin is definitely amongst the influences that spawned Cowboy Bebop.

The only listing my "anime" genre wishlist picks up is Anime Unleashed in TechTV (right now they're giving the Silent Mobius saga). Half of the Adult Swim lineup is anime (mon-thur). If you come across the movie "Ninja Scroll" you'll enjoy the hell out of it.

Cowboy Bebop doesn't rip off any other series, although it shares similarities with others.

Trigun is something I've been watching lately and is really good. Its sort of an anime/sci-fi/western and is probably your best bet for anime on TV right now.

InuYasha is good, but totally different then Cowboy Bebop and is more fantasy-ish not sci-fi.
Rurouni Kenshin is also good, but again totally different from CB and is again more fantasy-ish then sci-fi.

In general not a lot of anime gets shown on TV to choose from. And Cowboy Bebop pretty much set a new standard in anime that only a few shows have been able to meet since.

yeah...I saw it at the local FYE...What do you think of it so far?

My son liked it but I haven't seen it yet (other than the first episode from the NewType USA DVD a few months ago).

My g/f, who is big into anime, recommends Crest of the Stars. She's going to an anime convention next week, and one of her friends staying with us seconds it. She's pretty good about picking "similar" animes.

Thank you all very much.

Based on your suggestions, I've already checked out Trigun and Lupin, and while they certainly aren't serious, they are entertaining. My teenagers have also picked up on Inuyasha and .hack/sign, or dot"slash$, or whatever it is. I will next be trying Patlabor 2, rahXephon, Crest of the Stars, and if Escaflowne is done by people associated with CB, I'll definately be checking it out.

I now realize that asking for something 'similar' to CB is like asking for something similar to Firefly. Sometimes shows are so different and Genre bending that nothing else exists remotely like it.

Oh well, maybe someday I'll fall in love with a series that has more than 20 episodes.

Thanks again.

The similarities between Cowboy Bebop and Firefly have already been mentioned on the forum. ;)

I'm in the same boat because the only anime I've seen so far that has hooked me to the extent I have to own it is You're Under Arrest. Where do I go next? Aside from checking out Fujishima Kousuke's other work, Oh My Goddess!, I have no clue.

I've seen bits of Escaflowne, Ranma, Patlabor, Cowboy Bebop, Maison Ikoku -- it's all fun, but the only things on the "must have" list are YUA and Miyazaki & some of the other work by
Studio Ghibli.

Edited to clarify: I like Cowboy Bebop, but I can't necessarily say that anybody who likes it will also like YUA. YUA is definitely an acquired taste. The two things I like most about it are the humor and the gorgeous 'cinematography' (at least in the original movie where they had the resources to do that kind of thing). Lots of neat stuff, playing with light.

ooooh...I need to break out my copy of YUA...I haven't watched them in a while...bought them in '95 or '96, I even have some of the dark horse/studio proteus comics from when they first came out...

And I would definitely check out Oh! My Goddess...I like that one a lot...It's in my top 5.

A hard to find one that is in the old school of anime is Kimagure Orange Road...Animeigo has it, but you have to by the box...and it's $250  But...for me that's my must have...it was one of the first things I watched, and I was hooked from the start.

I'm getting YUA from Animeigo on DVD now (2 box sets so far). I have some of the Dark Horse comics, too....
