CSI Miami, What a Crock

I like this show. At least I want to like this show. I have watched CSI LV since the beginning. I have also watched CSIM since its beginning. But from its very inception as it was an episode of CSI LV, they started with the technical inaccuracies on firearms.
In that first episode they referred to a Taurus as a cheap Beretta knockoff. Later one of the guys found a M11-9 that "has been modified to fire full auto." He then said that it had "one in the chamber", which is impossible because it is an open-bolt weapon when set up for full-auto and the fixed firing pin would not allow "one in the chamber". I guess they just thought that the combination of full-auto and "one in the chamber" would sound scarier. Later there was an episode about... which was also BS. There have been others that I can't recall right now. Then tonight's episode had Horatio (sp) determine that the presence of 7.62x39mm ammo meant AK (as in AK-47) and then said, "that's not target practice, it's preparation." Which could of course be true but is not indeed automatically the case. The round is also used in the SKS and quite popular with people doing target shooting and deer hunting. And even if it was being used in an AK, there are thousands of people in this country shooting them who are not preparing to wage war on America, or whatever.
I will continue to watch this show because, unlike most others, I actually like the red headed guy as a actor and this show is interesting. I just wish they'd drop their subtle anti-gun campaign. It isn't necessary for the show and combining technical flaws to try and make it more convincing just makes the writers look like pathetic messengers with a somewhat hidden agenda. :(

Retrodog, I'm not wanting to jump into any political debate on gun control ... But, I didn't see any anti-gun flames in the show. What I infered from their moment with "the tree" was that he saw multiple calibers that weren't ~particularly~ deer hunting types. That lead to his deduction of "PREPARATION".
That, at least, how I took it.
As for the inaccuracies ... Im a bio-chem Engineer --> Don't even start with their lab :) These guys can do ANYTHING in 5 minutes or less ;)

Aren't all cop shows usually on the anti-gun bandwagon?

drosoph, yeah, well I did say "subtle" didn't I... ;)
T-Veaux, point taken.

Retro, I'm in the same boat as you--I want to like CSI:M, and think that Caruso's brooding Mr. Wizard character could work, but the stories are just out in left field. There is a small sense of realism to CSI:LV--that's completely missing in CSI:M.

You mean to tell me people are actually still watching this show?

Of course the fact that DNA testing actually takes more than a few hours in real life pretty much makes every episode of both CSIs inaccurate.

I think it goes without saying that if you are an "expert" in whatever professional trade is portrayed in a television show or movie, you are going to see gross inaccuracies. I can still remember seeing War Games when it came out (I was still in high school) and thinking, "Come on, you can't hear speach over a modem like that!" I still enjoyed the movie though.
The fact of the matter is that TV shows like CSI (and all the rest of the 9 or 10pm dramas) are "dumbed down" for the general viewing public. Otherwise, absolutely noone would watch, and that is not what the networks want, clearly.
Just my 2 cents. (I'm very good at stating the obvious. :) )

[Edit: Oh, forgot to mention that I enjoy CSI, as well as CSI: Miami (but not as much).]

My pet peeve was during the CSI:M rental house drug lab episode, when they went in to check for chemical fumes. Horatio used a Draeger tube device, which is very low-tech - just squeeze the bulb to pull air through a tube that changes color in the presence of the chemical you are looking for. Instead, he's waving the device in the air, and takes an 'electronic' reading (it may even have beeped!)
Hollywood!
Whats more, my local paper had a recent article about how accurate all the stuff they have on both CSI shows is. You've got to laugh!

I was able to stomach about half a dozen episodes at the beginning of the season. Just for the heck of it I recorded last week's episode and didn't make it past the opening diddy. I don't remember what they did, but it was so stupid I had to immediately skip to end and remove it from my hard drive.
