Anyone going to watch "Manor House" on PBS?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just set up my SP tonight. I saw some of the previoius incarnations on PBS (1900 House was one) and thought they were well done. Kind of like Survivor, except no one gets voted off and you don't win $1MM. :D The families have to apply to get on the show and in most cases someone in the family is a history buff.

I'm looking forward to "Manor House" because of the way they're setting up the families in different social classes.

Here's a schedule look-up if you want to see when it's going to be on your local PBS station(s)....

Thanks for the Heads-Up... SP to be set shortly.

I enjoyed 1900 House and Frontier House... I think that there was one set during WWII; but I've only seen parts of it.

Thanks for the heads up! I enjoyed 1900 House and Frontier House.

Looks like it's on at the end of the month here. I look forward to it. :)

Me three!

I appreciate the reminder.

Have I mentioned that I enjoyed 1900 House and Frontier House?

Excellent. I've only seen 1900 house but I'll look forward to this as well.

I totally missed out on 1900 House and Frontier House, but I did catch 1940s House and loved it. I'll have to catch this one too. Thanks!

Posted by: jradosh

I saw all of Frontier House (loved it) but only one ep of 1900 House and I totally missed 1940s house (never even heard of it). :(

Thanks to you, I'll catch all of Manor House. :D

Posted by: Redleg

We missed 1940s house? :( When was it on?

Posted by: dthmj

I missed 1940's house too.... But also saw 1900 and Frontier House...

I'll have to set up an SP to catch Manor House - it's on at the end of the month here...

I'm personally a bit disappointed they didn't seem to have any young women on the upstairs family. :/ But I'll check the show out when it airs here..

Yes, this is one of the very first times you can see an iPreview on CBS. PBS is once again doing commercials on other commercial networks (they also did this for the Frontier House series).

As is policy, such commercials cannot have time/date information and can only have 'Check your local listings'. When Discovery used to advertise its crime shows on the 1st season of CSI, I remarked on posts here that they should just use the TiVo iPreview to let people hook into the shows directly. In any case, the PBS commercials are all tagged with the TiVo information and you can setup a recording directly from the special preview or these PBS commercials.

The Manor House is also a yellow star TiVo promotion. You can record it from watching the videos there as well.

I enjoyed 1900 House and Frontier House but after watching the preview I think I'm going to give Manor Hous a pass.

Posted by: Big_Daddy

Yeah, looking forward to it. My wife (who loved 1940's house) almost flipped when she saw the preview.

Would anyone here go on a show like this? I mean, you can only play "scullery boy and chamber maid" for so long. I'd love to be Lord of the Manor, but with my luck they'd set the show in France just as the nobles were being killed....

Liking it so far...
'course it always brings up the issue of inequality, and the fact that you just can't get people these days to live like this...

Posted by: Fustanella

It's on Now Playing awaiting my and milady's pleasure. It's clear Sir John relishes the "lord o' the manor" role - but sorry sir, no flogging, we're 21st-century folk.

Am I the only person that is NOT interested in watching this thing?

However, with regard to the "star" promos, did anyone watch the Nova piece on Rosalind Franklin? Excellent.

I HAVE TiVo'd the Manor House and will watch it.
I also TiVo'd the Nova piece and watched the first few minutes while it was recording. I haven't watched the rest of it yet but I'm looking forward to it.

Does anyone know the order of the episodes. I set Tivo to grab a few(4) of them but not sure which is the correct order.

From TiVo Central Online:

Manor House "Upstairs Downstairs; Making the Grade" Modern-day individuals attempt to reproduce history at an Edwardian mansion in Scotland: the butler and housekeeper organize the junior staff; the French chef prepares the first dinner; the Olliff-Coopers relish their privileged lifestyle.

Manor House "The Servants Revolt; Tough Love" The staff crisis comes to a head; the estate hosts a charity bazaar; the chef prepares a grand dish in the authentic Edwardian style, to the horror of the family; a forbidden romance blossoms.

Manor House "Days of Empire; Winners and Losers" A special evening of entertainment celebrates the success of the British Empire; everyone enjoys a day at the races; the servants clean the mansion for the last time; the family endures a humbling transition back to the modern world.

There are 6 episodes, one hour per episode. PBS is showing them in 2 episode blocks currently. After a few weeks, I think they'll show them in one episode at a time.

Okay, so plenty of them have aired....any opinions?

I liked it! (oddly..) I really didn't think I would, since it looked all snooty and PBS-ish (I rarely watch PBS, except for New Yankee Workshop, This Old House stuff). It kept me up late last night watching it, so I guess that goes for something!:)

We watched the first two hours last night. Really liked it. I wonder if they'll ever be able to keep a scullery maid. :D

Posted by: TiVo'Brien

Our final two hour block aired last night. What a terrific show. Watching the family last night having to leave the manor I was reminded of having to leave our cruise ship after a 14 night cruise. It's difficult to leave such luxury, pampering, being catered to 24/7, and lack of responsibilities.

I heard the idea and was immediately reminded of the movie Gosford Park. I haven't watched the series yet, but was hoping someone might comment on the similarity in theme...

How interesting. PBS seems to list some of the episodes by different names. Specifically, "Up to Scratch" instead of "Making the Grade," "Cold Comfort" instead of "Tough Love," and "Home and Empire" instead of "Days of Empire." What's up with that. The first substitution is a difference in American and British idiom, but the second and third?

Posted by: esperantisto

I think it is the difference between the American and British names for the episodes. Co-incidentally, the British name for the show was "Edwardian Country House." AND apparently the American version is longer. I'm guessing the British episodes were about 45mins apiece.

There are three interviews with the cast of Manor House (Edwardian Country House) in the Washington Post:

Very entertaining reads! John Olliff-Cooper comes across, by the way, as an utter jerk in real life.

They first aired three 2-hour shows, which were clearly divided into 2 parts. Now they are starting to show 1-hour shows, which are just part of them. Hence the different names and different ep numbers. Episode numbers on the three hour shows were 101, 103, 105 I think.
