HELP - Unable to restore backup!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I had a drive failure and am trying to restore my backup file to a new drive but det a decompression error when using the mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc command

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I go from here? I have a TCD230040 TiVo Series2 40-hour unit that had 4.0 and hmo working great. I just want to get back up and running...

Any suggestions are welcome!!

What size drive are you attempting to restore it to? You only need the -s 127 if you're restoring to a larger drive than the original image was taken from.

And are you sure the backup is named tivo.bak? If you downloaded it, it might have a different name.

The drive was an 80GB drive and I renamed the image tivo.bak. After many attempts to restore the backup all with the same end result, I decided to go ahead and see how bad the error was since it would go all the way through the restore process. When I placed it in the TIVO it booted up fine and went through guided setup. The onl2 problems I have now are:

1. It saw the drive as a 41 hour instead on 80+...fixed this by using mfsadd tool.

2. It won't update to 4.0 software so I can activate hmo again...any ideas on how to get this working again.? Should I keep forcing a call or can I call TIVO?

Thanks in advance for all your help,

Tony

HMO updates should work fine with expanded/new drives (many have) but one person reported that his wouldn't go until he put his original drive back in un-expanded. So you might try going back to the 41 hour partition and seeing if that does it - please report back on that.

My guess, though, is that the reason for no update is that the drive isn't right due to the decompression error. Do you have the original drive still - then you can make a new 4.0 backup . . .

No, I do not have the original image...the drive got wiped out by a friend. Any ideas on how I can get back to an original, pre-wipeout state?

Thanks,
Tony

I have a new image that I have been able to use on my Tivo and the restore went with no errors at all. I have not used the mfsadd command and still am unable to update to 4.0. Any suggestions or ideas as to where I go from here???

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.
