Newsflash: TiVo causes global warming (Letter to Editor slams TiVo)
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was leafing through this weeks issue of Electronic Design magazine (an electronics industry freebie) when I came upon this amusing (in a pathetic way) letter to the editor. Just to give some context, a previous issue had a feature article on TiVo. You will need Acrobat reader to view it.

That was the funniest letter I've read in a long time. So I guess she doesn't have DTV, because she wouldn't want it as a doorstop if she didn't want to pay anymore.
Shame on TiVo for not using it's knowledge to create a cure for cancer. Where are you TiVo for not equalizing the third world countries?
BTW what is a Surface Finishing company. I don't think it is a product that is making the world a better place, to me it looks like it might do something that makes life a little nicer by having a nicer finish on something, it does not make renewable energy, also do they only use recycled products?

Some people find it more convenient to bitch about something, of which they are completely uneducated, than actually examine the facts.

Kim's letter was very sad. It really is an insight into things only she and her therapist should be discussing... ;)

But what about the energy bandwidth she wasted in writing and emailing that letter? Couldn't that have gone to feed starving children as well?

They made you pay lots of money for it? How exactly did they do that?

And can you show one post from any knowledgable posters on this board, or even the TiVo employees for that matter that ever once said they didn't collect this data? The privacy policy specifically states that they collect viewing habits anonymously.
Heck if you actually read much tech or entertainment news rather than jumping on a sentence that strikes you, you would have seen TiVo's recent findings on what was replayed most during the Oscars or how much War coverage is being recorded by TiVo viewers. It's not like they're hiding anything there, except of course to the people who pay no attention to anything.
And you wonder why you keep getting referred to as a troll.

He's been banned. :) They didn't make him pay lots of money for it either, they "made they made him paid lost of money for it. and then on top of that makes more money out of him"
I don't think babelfish has a 'guardianx to english' translator page yet :(

Awww, banning's no fun. He provided a good distraction. It was fun to point out all the holes in his posts. I will admit, I gave up on my quest to actually show him the real facts, but still. Maybe he'll come back under an assumed identity. The writing style would be easy enough to recognize.

I want to know about this:quote:
Now, I am not paranoid enough to care that this company monitors what I specifically watch on my TV. But I strongly object to paying a monthly fee for a service that seems specifically tailored to give the provider an opportunity to make more money from my statistics than it probably does on selling the box in the first place.
If they could make more money selling the data than selling the box, I think the box would be a whole lot cheaper. At $99 for a stand-alone they could flood the market.
Come on TiVo, get off your duff and start peddling my viewing data! I want $99 TiVos!
:)
Posted by: ADent
I paid $99 each for my 3 TiVos (2 SA, 1 DTiVo) . (Or was the DTiVo $89?)

Whatta maroon. Apparently, if you're not directly working to save the planet, what you are doing has no value. PV

The title to this thread is totally misleading. I could find no reference to "global" or "warming" in the article that was cited. I used the Acrobat search function. The information is simply not there. If it had been in the original article, it has since been removed. Perhaps the Electronics Design people read this thread and modified the original article. Or maybe hackers changed the link to point to a bogus copy of the article. The experience left me confused and disallusioned. Who can I trust? What can I believe? Is global warming really caused by TiVo?
Before reading the article I had not considered how much custom ring tones for cellular phones had held back development of "renewable energy, high mileage vehicles and equalizing opportunity for lesser developed nations and peoples of the world".

That'd strike me as over the line, looking someone up on the internet to complain about a letter they wrote to a magazine. I hope no one does so. If you've got an argument with her letter send a rebuttal into the magazine.
