Swapping B-drive to a new TiVO

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I bought a Hughes HDVR2 directv/tivo a few weeks ago and installed a pre-set-up B drive from Lakeview comm. It worked OK at first, but I had progressively worsening probs with the unit where it was resetting itself.

I removed the B-drive and sent the unit back for replacement. I now have a new HDVR2 and reinstalled the B-drive.

The unit appears to be working OK, but it isn't recognizing the B-drive space anymore. Any thoughts? Does the B-drive need to be set-up fresh for the new HDVR2? Will following the Hinsdale directions get me there?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You need to prepare the disk before the TiVo will recognise it. You can 'bless' it with BlessTiVo, but I prefer to use mfsadd, which is part of MFS Tools 2.0.

See Hinsdale's post at the top for instructions.

Which drive needs to be prepared, the stock A drive or the B-drive?

When I installed the B-drive into my first HDVR2, the added memory showed up with no mods to the original A-drive.

Does this mean that the B-drive was changed when first installed and needs to be "reset" to it's originally prepped condition?

I've gone through the Hinsdale instructions and they appear to indicate that the A-drive needs modification as well - if this is the case, why was the B-drive recognized immediately when installed the first time?

Thanks again

Yes - the B drive was changed when you added it to the first HDVR2 - and it needs to be set up again for the new unit. The new Hinsdale instructions tell you to use 'mfsadd' which involves putting both the A and B drive in your PC. The older Hinsdale instructions tell you how to 'bless' the drive to add it to your stock drive - needing only the B drive in the PC (do this in 'noswap').

Finally, you should be able to send this back to your provider to have them do the work also.

Thanks for the help so far. Unfortunately, I've run into another stumbling block.

I made the Boot CD to bless the drive and installed the drive as the slave to the first master (stock) hard drive. Unfortunately, the drive (a 120 GB Samsung) is only recognized as a 32 GB drive. I've gone through all the bios settings and can't find any that seem to turn off BIOS IDE detection and allow full drive size access.

Oddly, the stock drive in the computer (an old Dell Dimension 8100) is a 60 GB drive that is fully recognized.

Does anyone have any idea how to pull this off in a Dell Dimension, or, alternately, in an older G3 PowerMac?

Thanks again.

Quick note in addition: I have updated the Dell to the latest BIOS version recommended by Dell for use with Win ME (the installed system).

Thanks.

Check your jumpers and make sure they are in the right spot. I had a similar problem with my Maxtor 120G.

njtaz,

You're my hero. That was exactly it. These stupid Samsung drives have two different jumper settings for >=32 GB. I was using the wrong one. Once I switched it, the computer recognized it correctly, I blessed it, and I now have a fully-functional 141 hr Hughes DirecTiVO.

Thanks everyone for all the help!
