Can I copy the shows to another tivo (legally and easily)

I have no intention of breaking any laws I just want to solve a problem.
Here is what I would like to do.
I have two Hughes DirecTivo's (lets call them yellow and green), The yellow has a 80gb drive but the sound does not work out of the RF or RCA's, I distribute this through the house using the cable so that's a problem. Green Tivo is an unmodified 35 hrs.
What I want to do is this
1) Buy an HDVR2 - I think this part is easy and legal
2) Take the drive out of the yellow TIVO and restore it to the green one (easy I think)
3) BUT...... I want a way to keep the recordings on the 80 hour one - this is where I suspect the problem lies.
On a related issue - If I switch the 80gb drive and I find that I cannot keep the recordings, is it just as simple as putting the 80gb drive in the green tivo and then running a "delete everything". No need to restore software or reformat or anything like that ?
Thanks

Item 1) is the only one you can do. Step 2) will force you to do the "clear and delete everything", thus negating step 3).

If both are the same Hughes Series 1 DTivo's then the drives should swap with no problems. A drive swap should keep all recordings intact on the 80 gig.

No, a drive swap won't work - bsnelson explains why.
On the "related note" - yes, all you have to do is a "Clear and delete everything" and it will be as if you had just taken it out of the box for the first time. This process takes a few hours, though.

For those who have not experienced this; on all DirecTiVo units (Series1 and Series2) movement of disks between one unit and the other (eg. disk from one HDVR2 to another HDVR2, or from one Sony SAT-T60 to another Sony SAT-T60) will result in a bootable TiVo with DirecTV capabilities, HOWEVER you will immediately receive, when pressing the "TiVo" button, a notice stating "Hardware Error #51" -- you will also notice that your TiVo capabilities will cease to function -- so basically, viewing and recording of programs will not be possible.
As stevel mentioned earlier -- performing a 'clear and delete everything' will 'fix' the problem - and your TiVo will operate normally after go through the guided setup process again.
