I'm following the Hinsdale guide to replacing my (S1 Phillips) drive with a
120gb drive.
After I enter the mount command in step 7...
"At # prompt both Boot CD and Floppy users type the following commands to mount your C: drive:"
mkdir /mnt/dos
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
It says "you must specify the filetype"
Any ideas on what I need to do to get a proper backup?

I'd bet your hard drive's DOS partition isn't the first partition. If you have a Compaq, HP, Dell, or some others, there is a small diagnostic partition at the beginning of the disk.
Try /dev/hda2 and see what you get.
Also, make sure, when you boot linux, to scroll back up and verify the drive letters hda b c and d. You should see the make and model of each drive.

It's also worth mentioning that if you have an NTFS partition (Windows 2000 and Windows XP will most likely default to NTFS), mount can only mount it read-only, so you won't be able to save your backup to it. I connected a spare 10GB hard disk formatted FAT32 to make my backups.

Try:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda /mnt/dos
instead.

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
This worked for me -- I had exactly the same problem as the original poster. I had formatted a new scratch drive using a Windows Me recovery disk.
