upgrade question

I am getting ready to upgrade my 40hr Series II TIVO to two drives (120MB and 80MB). I am guessing the 120MB must be jampered as master and the 80GB as slave inside TIVO? I was reading the How to questions and did not run into this. I am also assuming that the 4.0 software will have no hiccups or problems? (I was just upgraded to 4.0 last night).

Another question how do I find out what model my TIVO is? (TCD240040 or other) Look on the back of the TIVO itself?
I thought it was a 40 hr but it does look like the one Weaknees' in his series two page.

series two (the one on the left)

by the way is the solution for the series II power supply coming out tomorrow? :)

Cheers

I don't see why you would need the 120GB to be the master and the 80GB to be the slave. Many people, including myself, just add a second (obviously bigger) drive as B, and leave A the same. So, I have a 40GB as master and a 120GB as slave. 4.0 shouldn't cause you any problems either, I upgraded yesterday just fine.

The TiVo model is indeed on the back of the TiVo. Look for Model No. near the power connector. And the 60-hour on weaknees has pictured looks just like both my 40-hours (230040 and 240040), so you most likely do have a 40-hour if you think you do.

I can't comment on whether or not the power supply solution is coming out tomorrow, but I went ahead with the upgrade yesterday and haven't seen any problems so far.

I understand the whole concept but I am trying not to do this more than one time. So since I do have an 80gb sitting pretty I thought I would put it to good use. ? On the other hand you did jumpered the newdrive as slave (on the drive itself and the orig was jumpered as master?)

Thanks for input

Yeah, if I had an 80GB lying around and wasn't planning on upgrading it to anything else in the near future, I don't see why I wouldn't swap it out with the 40. I'm sure it's not too hard to swap the 80 out for a 120 eventually, but if you're planning on doing it soon I'd hold off so you don't have to use the 80 at all, thus saving a step.

Assuming you go for the 120+80 setup, I'd make the 120 master, so if you swap the 80 out in the future your A drive stays constant and your B drive is the one that changes. Probably doesn't matter that much, but it makes sense to me.

Personally, my original 40 was jumpered as single. So, when I added the 120, I changed the 40's jumper to master (sometimes it works either way but it's best to be safe), and changed the 120's jumper to slave (most come set to cable select from the factory, including mine).

I upgraded my unit with 80GB & 80GB from a backup (using DTiVoMad). The A drive failed and they replaced it with a 120GB and it turns out that mfsadd could expand the B drive, but not the A (so I swapped things around using the 120GB from my computer).

So I would recommend the A drive be the 120GB, and make the 80GB the B drive.
