dual drive to single drive upgrade

I'm preparing to upgrade my DTivo that has 2 40GB drives to 1 120GB dirve. While reading Hinsdale's how-to, I noticed that the upgrade option #10 (2 drives to 1 while preserving recordings doesn't work on DTivos). Options #4&5, which Hinsdale recommends, seem to force you to keep one of your old drives during the upgrade. While I see the wisdom in this, I don't want to do that. My existing drives are VERY loud and that's why I'm replacing them.

So, is there a way to upgrade from my 2 drives to 1 larger drive while keeping my recordings? Also, if the process involves making a backup with recordings first, how much HDD space will I need?

The best way to do this is with a backup. To make a backup, you'll probably need less than 300 MB of space on your FAT partition. Here's how you'd make a backup:

mfsbackup -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdX /dev/hdY

where X is your TiVo A drive and Y is your TiVo B drive.

Wouldn't that erase my recordings though? Hinsdale's guide says "Note: This option will create a small divorced single drive image (containing your season passes, setup, etc. – not recordings)..." about creating a backup of a 2 drive Tivo. I really want to keep my recordings if I can.
