My TiVo just upgraded to 4.0. I bought a Linksys USB ethernet card and added the line:
code:
tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &
to the file:
code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
in both hdc4 and hdc7 mounts when it's in my PC. BUT... I cannot get telnet access over ethernet ("telnet 192.168.1.103") after I start the TiVo back up.
I CAN ping the TiVo via ethernet, and the TiVo can update itself over the LAN, but no Telnet...
Anyone else have this problem? Any answers?
I looked a lot around these forums and others and can't seem to find the answer. Also I don't have a Serial cable, and would rather not want to use that.

I thought I read somewhere that tivo has some sort of firewalling with 4.0. Might be called ipchains?? Not really sure though.
How did you get telnet on a series 2? I thought it couldnt be done yet.

I don't think he did get telnet... He just mounted the ext2 partitions from his PC and edited the files that way.

So, was there a way to get telnet access to work for the 4.0 software for an S2 Tivo stand-alone? If somebody knows, could you please post that on this thread?
I gave up a couple weeks ago because my mods to rc.sysinit were being killed on boot (it actually erases all files in that directory too!). So, kinda stuck. Any help would be appreciated!

I still haven't found an answer...
I read something about killing initrd but haven't really seen any definitive posts on how to do that, plus I'm afraid if I did that I might kill something else.
Really looking for the answer to this one.

Well, silly me, I first tried the Steve Jenkins newbie hack, and successfully mounted my Tivo drive on my PC and copied in some bin's, and modified the rc.sysinit files. So, when booting my SA S2 tivo, it killed my changed to the rc.sysinit file (on mnt7). Also had some fun because I had not reset my Tivo lately and in the middle of starting this hack, my Tivo upgraded itself from 3.2 to 4.0 software. But... that just made me even more determined to beat the darn thing into submission!
So, I need a bit of "validation" here, so please tell me if I'm right:
With my Stand-Alone Series-2 Tivo, I could use Ingineer's BASH_ENV hack if I start with a U5 image for an SA S2 Tivo and load that onto a new blank hard drive. What worries me is the instructions say that this info is for an HDVR2, not an SA S2 system. So, has anyone tried this hack with a Stand-alone system? are the SA S2 and HDVR2 systems set up the same, at least as far as this hack is concerned? Seems to me, the biggest issue is that I just need to make sure I start with a U5 image for an SA S2 system, not a U5 from an HDVR2 system. Right?
Does it matter that my software version ends with 140? I think that's the size, but really not sure.
If I am right, can anyone point me to a U5 image for an SA system, and is there a way to know what system an image is meant for by looking at the file somehow?
