Tivo series 1 model differences??

Anyone know are there any hardware differences besides the storage/harddrive size for the Philips HDR112, HDR212, and HDR312? I am asking that is because I want to use a HDR112 back image with Tivo 3.0 software on my HDR312. The reason is my modem is down and I can't do any external device if I don't have 3.0. Does anyone know will that cause any problem?

I think all the x12 are the same except for the size. However backup your current drive and go for it!

All Philips HDR models can interchange software with each other.
Phillips DSR6000s and Hughes GXCEBOTs can interchange software with each other.
Never use a Sony backup on a non-Sony model, or a non-Sony backup on a Sony model, as it has been shown to cause the recorder to download new software every time the recorder calls in. When TiVo detects this is happening, they cancel the TiVo service for that recorder.

I sure didn't know this was true and would like to hear if anyone has done this and what happened. I thought it would continually download software upgrades thinking the version was wrong. I assume the Philips logo disappears from the menu screens if running GXCEBOT software on a DSR6000 but what else?

WRONG!!! This will cause major problems on TiVo's servers and will get your service turned off.

Newbie question:
How can I tell if I have a Sony Tivo? If its not a Hughs, and its Stand-Alone, does that mean its a Sony by default?
I have looked all over my Stand-Alone Series 2 Tivo, and nowhere can I find a Sony name or logo, or any manufacturer name at all besides Tivo itself. Says it was made in Mexico on a few places! Perhaps I have a Mexican Tivo!? LOL

The sony units have the sony logo on the front and show the sony logo just before the startup animation.

Your system information screen has the manufacturer's name on it.
