Ex-Treme Dating

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Last week I went out to lunch and they were taping a segment of a reality dating show called "Ex-treme Dating". I had never seen the show. I don't watch reality shows in general.

I always assumed that everything was heavily edited to look very different from what really happened, but now I know that it is even more contrived than that. On this show they went well beyond leading the daters and were simply telling them what to do and even giving them line readings.

The only reality was that they really weren't real union actors that would have to be paid real union salary. It was a total sham.

I am looking forward to watching that episode on TV when it airs so I can see what they turned the mess into for broadcast.

oh my. I'm a bit scared by the title.

Thanks for sharing. That is really sad. Particularly since, from the dating shows I've watched, you'd think that they'd at least feed them better lines.

I searched and found this blurb about the series.

"Ex-Treme Dating brings a unique twist to the relationship genre. Jillian Barberie hosts this fun, unconventional dating show, where the "EX's" get the last laugh. Ex-Treme Dating sends people on their dream dates with people perfectly profiled to match them...with a few strings attached. Throughout the date, two of the dreamboat's ex-girlfriends will be able to converse with, and provide intimate details to the potential new love as they watch the date progress."

The show is mildly interesting. It's actually just now back in new shows - it used to be in reruns for a long time, then it was off the air, then came back, etc. It's not on in a lot of markets, either.

So Tori, did what you saw fit into the possibility that it was simply the ex-es feeding info/lines to the date? Or was it more like a producer telling the ex-es what to feed to the date?

I've only seen this show once, when some friends were visiting for New Year's, but it seemed like a funny concept.

It was definitely on the part of the show, not because of the Ex-es. If you want I'll go into detail now, or I can wait until the episode airs.

Pleae go into detail. I love these shows (Blind date, 5th Wheel, Elimidate, Extreeme dating, Dismissed...there are a lot huh?). I don't watch every episode, but I have season passes on some of them with a KAM of 1. This way I can laught at one as a nice change of pace to a particularly depressing episode of Buffy, Angel or Dawsons.

So tell us what you know. That'd be sad (I said sad not surprising) if it was all Canned. That makes it loose some of the charm. Its mostly the vouyeristic quality that makes it work.

Thanks for sharing with us I'm curious to hear the rest.

Each time I see this thread I think it is about modding your date so you can get serviced for free.

This was at a really good chili place that has a lot of different flavors and gives free samples. First they were sampling chili and at the producers prodding she was challenging him to try the hottest chili, which he did.

They sit down to eat and they aren't really eating, just a few bites, typical tv eating, not date eating. They are there for the camera not on a date in front of the camera. The restaurant brings out habanero peppers which are extremely hot. Again the guy is challenged to eat one, which he does. It is definitely hotter for him than is pleasant, but he says it isn't too bad. A little more chit chat. He gets up to get a drink refill. He comes back and is eating more chili and the producer says, "you know what would be really funny is if you grab the sour cream and just start shoveling it in your mouth to get rid of the heat." The date guy says, "well I have candy in my mouth now." The producer responds, "well just for fun." The guy picks up the sour cream and takes a bite. The producer says "no, you have to say something about needing it because it is hot." The guy puts it down, says something along the lines of "I need something to cool this s*** off" and eats more sour cream.

His two ex-es in the back are being guided on what to say too. They have been instructed to act as if they don't like him, but they are actually still friends and like him just fine. I'm not even entirely convinced that they were ex-girlfriends at all.

So then the lunch portion of the date is over (there is also some psycho guy at the restaurant who keeps butting in and talking to them, or anyone who might be willing to listen, wonder if the mic picked up any of that), and it is apparently time for them to take turns waiting outside while they let the other one talk about what they are thinking at that point.

The producer starts by asking the girl leading questions, but when that isn't getting him where he wants, he starts to suggest things she might say. Then he is actually telling her lines and giving her the right inflections of voice and stuff. Finally he tells her to make fun of the guy for eating the sour cream. He was such a wimp for needing it and not being able to take the pepper. He looked like a dog lapping it up.

So now, the producer thought up and made the sour cream bit happen, and is then instructing the girl to not like him because of it.

More of the same when it is his turn.

Then they are packing up gear and the girl from the date is just talking of camera. She says she doesn't care, she gets $250 and she is going back to where she is from (Jamaica I think she said) so nobody she cares about will see it.

Plus it appeared that the person in charge of the dating segment and the person in charge of the ex-es portion of it are in some kind of feud.

It was all very interesting to see in person and I look forward to seeing what they do with it.

Yes I am. What is your favorite flavor so far? I'm sure I've been there at least once when you have because we are there A LOT. It hasn't aired yet but I am still watching for it.

I tend to go on weekends.
I haven't tried all the flavors but my favorite so far is either Gunslinger or Texas Pride. Although, I'm not sure that I'm brave enough to try Demon.
Last week, I had Beef Hickory though, mmmmmmmm.. mmmmmmmmm....

I just went there for some Habanero/Mango Chicken tonight, sounds like you lean toward the more traditional ones though. I like those too. I've tried Demon, but wouldn't eat a bowl by itself. I've had it mixed and I've had it over soul fries.

Well at least the Ex-Treme daters got some good free chili out of it.

Just in case anybody wants to check it out. The episode is supposed to air on July 1st. Local times will vary, and in most markets they air two episodes a day, but the guide date refers to "a man turns up the heat at dinner".

stupid typos

I hope they have Curry chicken this weekend.....

hmmmm, looks like Chili my Soul will be having a promotion for the showing of that episode
