Will Tivo Series 1 Control the Direct-TV Receivers Currently Offered for free?

Does anyone know if the Direct-TV receivers currently being offered for "free" by Direct-TV can be controlled by a Series-1 Tivo? I am considering subscribing to Direct-TV, and using the receiver they're currently offering, but I am concerned that my Series-1 will not be able to control this newer receiver. Does anyone know
1) What receiver they're currently offering?
2) Whether or not a Series-1 can control it?
3) Even if it CAN control the unit via IR-Blaster, can I setup the guide to receive the Direct-TV guide data, or will I not be able to set it to receive the Direct-TV guide???
Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide!

I would be really surprised if it didn't. For verification, post the model of the receiver you are looking at. Also does this receiver have a serial port (aka "wide data", "home control" etc)on the back or are you planning to use the IR blasters?

If you can get locals on Directv you really should get a DTivo (many advantages).
If you want to use your SA make sure you get a unit with the serial port. I believe all the RCA's have them.

I would guess DTV's promo includes the basic Hughes Director receiver. This unit does not have a serial port, but can be controlled by TiVo's IR blasters. You can probably upgrade one receiver to an Executive Director with a serial port, I'd guess it will cost about $75 extra (it also has optical output, not that it's going to do your standalone TiVo any good.)
You will get the program guide for DTV. It will be in the traditional TiVo format for your SA, not the DTV grid style. Go to www.zap2it.com, put in your zip and you'll see a DTV lineup. Note that you do not get PPV guide data on the SA.
I also recommend the DTiVo. I'm sure you can add that to the "free 2 room" offer for a reasonable sum.

This is exactly what I did. I was an SA user for years, but with the increase in the service cost (SA=$12.95, Dtivo=$4.99), and the addition of dual tuners on the Dtivo, the Dtivo was a no-brainer.
If you are worried about the cost, you can sell your SA and probably PAY for your Dtivo. I am selling my SA right now on ebay:

At the time of this writing it is almost up the price I paid for the Dtivo.
Edit: corrected Dtivo service price
