Thank goodness, I've missed you forum.
Lemme ask the question before you get bored with my funny story...
Is there any way to unlock a locked drive if qunlock doesn't work? Is there a reason why qunlock wouldn't work?
I tried to qunlock my friend's TiVo and had no success. It wouldn't do it from the floppy or from the bootCD (which should do it automatically I believe). But I was able to qunlock an old HD that was sitting around. Any suggestions? I've fixed the upgrade but I'm curious about what happened

Can I hazard a guess that this locked drive is a Maxtor upgrade drive and not the original?

I'm a little slow but I think I'm sniffing what you're saying...let me give the history and see if you have some insight...
My friend bought the TiVo. His drive was failing so he returned it and they repaired it. After he gave this drive some time to fail he decided to add a 120GB Western Digital drive.

So the drive I can't qunlock is a 40GB Maxtor that the Sony repair facility put into his DirecTiVo.

As a side-note...if there was no way to unlock this drive, was there any way to make a backup of his data?

Well, let me give you this link and hope you can figure out what's going on.

Some Maxtor drives do seem to have a problem with locking. Most people with this problem seem to be returning their drives.

Thanks alot Robert. I'm usually pretty good about searching first but I've had this on my mind for about 3 weeks and I just hopped on when I saw the site was up.

Funny story of that horrible weekend: Alotted 2 hours for the upgrade, spent about 50 hours total on it. My cable modem went out that weekend so I went to my friend's house to find out that the TivoCommunity Forum went down too. The computer I use to do TiVo Upgrades wouldn't boot to C: or to CDRom. Then my cable went out and TiVo had a channel drop on a show I wanted to see. Really not a good weekend for electronic stuff for me.

Again, thanks.
