Update: Is my DTivo dying?

Hello-
I posted a message the other day, regarding an issue that I was having with my Sony SAT-T60. Here is a brief re-cap:
I encountered the "Welcome, Powering Up..." screen on the morning of 5/19/2003. After disconnecting the DTivo from the UPS, I had it up and running throughout the rest of the day.
My wife noticed the same "Welcome, Powering Up.." message on the afternoon of 5/20/2003. I walked her through the restart process that I followed, and that seemed to fix things. I got home last night (5/20/2003) to find my DTivo drive(s) making a disturbing grinding / clunking noise. I immediately pulled the power, and proceeded to remove both hard drives.
I have two RMAs in process from Maxtor. I know that one of the drives is bad for sure, but I didn't want to take a chance. Both drives were installed 5/30/2002.
My question is this. I still have the original 40GB drive that I removed from DTivo. I was wondering if I installed this drive, would I be able to update to the current software, since this drive was removed before the software change? Will I have to look for an image of a SAT-T60 with the 3.0 software on it?
Thanks in advance.

Yes the SAT-T60 will upgrade to 3.1 in a call or two if you have a P4 card. I recently went back to an older version on one of mine and it updated the very next call.

Chris-
Thanks (again) for the response. I was hoping that it would be able to upgrade to the latest software. I have a Tivonet card on order, so when I get the replacement hard drives, I'm going to have an "upgrade DTivo" weekend. Hopefully, I'll be able to get the new drives installed, as well as the network card.
Thanks again.

Update:
I removed the two upgrade drives, and installed the original DTivo drive (glad that I kept it on the shelf for emergencies) today. It looks like the problem that I was having was in fact, drive related. My DTivo with the original drive is downloading the new software as we speak.
