Nic_Install error: "Not a Tivo drive"

A few weeks ago my genuine TurboNet card stopped working. I had a few skipping problems on my Tivo as well, and many times when I would reboot I would get the GSOD. I decided to remove the 40-gig B drive that I had added and I restored my March 03 backup to the original A drive (12-gig on a HDR-112).

Now when I run nic_install with the original drive on HDC I get the error message:

"Not a Tivo drive" (or something similar)

I even tried the '--force 3.0-01-1-000' option but that didn't help.

Am I supposed to MOUNT the hard drive first? The instructions for nic_install don't say that you need to.

It IS obviously a Tivo drive and I have hooked it all back up with just the A drive and it has made a daily call over the modem successfully. I tried rebooting many times and it works just fine - no GSOD at all. The TurboNet still isn't working right, so I really need to install NIC_INSTALL to see what's going on...maybe force an IP address since I can't ping it and can't see it in my router table as being assigned an IP address.

I downloaded the 2.0 and 3.0 images for my unit already and will restore those and start over as a last resort...

Maybe I should run some MFS tools on the A drive to make sure it's OK?
If so, how is this done?

...and adding "hdc=bswap" in my boot parameters (or using something besides MFSTools to boot) may help as in the following posts:

I'll try this later and post back...
