Upgrade: Foam under TiVo over; temperatures?

My second question regarding the upgrade : What to dow ith the foam under the TiVo cover? I'm using the weakness double bracket to go from an 80 hour disk to a 120+80GB setup. I imgine the foam is there to aid efficient airflow, so I don't want to take ALL of it off, if cutting just a part adequate to accommodate the drives/bracket aids in maintaining decent cooling/airflow?
Also, my system normally runs at 39-41 degrees Celsius with the 80 hour disk, but yesterday, in my interim tests with the bare 120GB Maxtor (7200 RPM, 2MB cache, Staples) with the cover OFF, it was showing 45-46 degrees! Is that because the drive runs THAT MUCH hotter, or the lack of airflow?
Also, the 120Gigger is NOISY! I vaguely remember a mention of soom tool that quietens drive seek performance at the cost of somewhat slower access. Can I apply this modification (software, I presume) after doing a full backup? The system is in my PC at home in the middle of an estimated 13.5 hour upgrade, and I don't want to restart and redo that backup/restore if I don't have to, to make it queiter.
Thanks!

Maxtor drives can be quietened using the AMSET utility which is available from the Maxtor site as part of their Powermax utility download.
Just boot into DOS, using the Powermax floppy you will create, and run AMSET /Quiet. You'll be amazed how quiet it suddenly becomes :)
AFAIK this just sets something in the firmware and is not destructive of your data. Certainly there are no warnings anywhere.

OK - I didn't realize search was back up - turns out the broad consensus is to remove the foam carefully, in case I need to RMA or sell the TiVo in the future, and need to bring it 'back to spec'.
I have the Weaknees TwinBreeze Upgrade with the additional fan, so hopefully that will aid the airflow and temperature issues.
Thanks for the tip on the AMSET utility, blindlemon!
