Six Feet Under Finale. 6-01-03 *Spoilers*

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Surprised this thread hasn't already been created.

Well. Where do I start. Lisa being dead. I like it. I am glad. I am glad not to have to deal with her much in the future. (assuming some small cameos in the future) What I am surprised is they don't tell you how she died. Drowned? Killed? Etc...

Rico. Damn. I was surprised to see that. Not sure why he would cheat on his wife when he is pissed off at his sister-in-law. But was I right by getting the impression he cut it off already?

Nate. Out of control. But I like how he ended up at Brenda's. Left with a lot of possibilites for next season. Is there a new season for sure?

David/Keith: YAWN!

Claire: Damn. She seemed to lose it at the end. The wedding scene was GREAT! I started cracking up. All one has to do is watch that epsiode and feel 1000% better about any problems in ones life. Cause the Fisher's are one messed up family. But I like the direction they are taking her.

I was expecting/hoping for more of a cliff hanger. Like last season. But I liked it. The past 4-5 episodes really made up for the first few shows. Now I have to see if I can catch up with the WIRE. (I missed the whole first season)

Ding dong the Witch is dead. . . :D

Yay!!! sorry had to get that out

Thought this was a great episode overall. I had a feeling that the ending would be like that a couple weeks ago -- two divergent paths joining again.

and Ruth! Excellent Scene with Nate (Jr.) Wonderful acting. (Nate was less so, but that might be the fact that I just don't connect with him) Hopefully he'll get his life back together now.

I don't know how i'm going to react to Ruth being married to George (I am Zephrim Cochran) Iforgethislastname.

Loved the little scene with Arthur too at the reception.

I thought the epsiode was weak and competed a very poor year. This season had a few good moments and looked like it was coming on a month or so ago, but this was average at best and poor considering what the series has been.

Lisa: What the heck happened with Lisa... foul play, suicide, what???? Or is she still alive? We really only saw her in Clarie’s dream? Was that really the deputy that called Nate? I wanted to know more..... I hope they fill us in next year!

Nate and Brenda: I knew Nate would end up at Brenda's place...and now that she is "somewhat" interested in a new guy.. will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Ruth and the new Mr.:Not sure how I am feeling about Ruth and her getting married... the new man seems to be "up to something" or "no good" in my mind... powerful scene when Dad Fisher was in the laundry room crying on the floor after Ruth went into the kitchen.

David and Keith... not sure how that is going to play out. I do feel that Keith truly loves David... just not sure if David can actually handle that or not.

Claire: Pretty funny at the wedding! But seems to be a lot going on with her - her journey of death with her father... meeting the past in a number of ways. And what happened with the boyfriend.. seemed like they were leading up to something rather huge with him being all freaking and stuff...

Rico: I was a little surprised he did what he did.. but can understand perhaps why he did it...

Overall I was expecting more from last nights episode...the last few episodes have been wonderful and moving forward well.

Let's hope next June things get answered.

Amen to that, Family. Much like the last season of The Sopranos I felt like it was a giant waste of my time. Everything that happened this season could have been done in half as many episodes and left so much more for further development.

Posted by: GT3NE1

I think it was the best episode yet.

Loved the scene in the car with Nate (drama) and the scene in the car with Rico (comedy). :)

Claire finally lost it. I don't think she has grieved yet for the lose of her unborn child and it all poured out while watching a happy moment for her mother and holding her niece.

Looks like Nate finally hit rock bottom. Great makeup job. He looked like he was dead on his feet.

Arthur and the gift. The whole time I was doing my Brad Pitt impression....."What's in the box?! What's in the box?!"

Can't wait until next season. Sounds like I am going to have to get Showtime to see this new Out of Order show to reunite will all my Sportsnight friends. :)

Wow - those scenes with Claire and her dad - particularly when she meets Lisa and the baby - were HEAVY. And I found the scene where Claire gives her mom the earrings was unexpectedly touching.

Nate's self destructiveness was a bit over the top. I mean, we know he is racked with guilt, so the drinking and bar hookups make sense, but the fighting and driving around screaming "I don't want to die" were a bit much.

Should be interesting to see if he gets back with Brenda for real. And I have a feeling that her neighbor won't fade into the background so easily.

David/Keith was truly dull. I was happy to see that relationship end, but unfortunately it looks like they will be back together. What a snoozefest - I miss the E popping club hopping David.

Rico? What the hell? Get a spine, man. The tension about the wife's sister staying with them is justified, but he really needs to step in when it comes to the movies and other influences the sister is having on his wife and kids. $5 says that the sister will somehow find out about the stripper and use it against Rico in a creative/blackmail sort of way.

Here's a prediction: she'll be the opening death in the first episode of next season, and all will be answered then.

I guess I'm in the minority on this board in saying that last night's episode was FANTASTIC. The lighting of some of the scenes (esp. the Claire/Mom scene, lit strongly from above) was stirring. The acting, well, wow. Just hand 'em the Emmys now. The whole "death fair" sequence was so well written, and the ending... brought the whole season full circle. Except for the Rico storyline (which I just didn't really care too much about one way or the other), every scene of last night's finale was SO believeable, so visceral, so raw. Easily the best hour of television this season. Going to be a long wait until the next season...

Posted by: GT3NE1

I'm assuming that after they showed Lisa's name and birtha and death dates, it was over right. That is when my Tivo cut off. So was that episode a full hour?

Posted by: ClutchBrake

I didn't buy this season because not for a minute do I believe Nate loved Lisa. Not before she went missing, not after. Sure, he said he did, but I never bought it.

You didn't miss anything by not padding.

Posted by: Cletus

Hmm, just remember that the season opened with the birth&death dates for Nate... ;)

Good episode. I hate it that I have to wait until the next season to see how it all plays out.

Posted by: Family

Wow

I've never felt so opposite to these opinions. I just wonder if it's a generational thing (I'm probably older) or a gender difference (I'm male). I'm not criticizing anyone's opinion, but when you talk about the lighting... well, I'm looking for great storylines, writing, and acting. Anything else is simply an add-on for me. Maybe I'm not in touch with my feelings as I should be, but little of last nite really touched me.

BTW...... I thought the series was great last season.

Posted by: zaknafein

I liked it a lot. As said before, the acting last night was really top notch. Claire's scenes where especially good.

And Nate: I think the first 3/4s of the season are what has made these last few episodes so good. It was quite obviouse when Nate and Lisa got married that Nate didn't love her. It was obvious that Nate himself knew he didn't love her. As the season went on, things changed. Nate didn't realize to what degree he loved Lisa until he lost her. That's why I think the car scene worked so well. Nate's insanity is an indication of the degree that he loved Lisa, but was never willing to admit.

And they used a great song for that scene, Climbatize, by Prodigy.

Same here. So I Tivoed the West Coast showing and padded it. Not seen it yet, but I am pleased Lisa is gone.

The wedding scene was great. I think Claire is the weakest character, certainly the most predictable, although the specifics of Nate's slide, (barfly banging, fight, even the end of the fight) were pretty obvious. The fact of the slide was a bit of a surprise, because I just couldn't picture him and Lisa as a real couple.

I thought the best scene was the father crying in the kitchen. Great stuff.

IMO, this show is light years better than the Soprano's. This season was not as good as season one, but still well worth the drive space.

Posted by: Satchel

About 20 minutes into the show...when Nate was picking up the barfly I turned to my wife and said, "I'm glad this is the season finale, because I'm tired of this crap..."
The Nate thing was way overdone...we get it, he's losing it...jeez...pound us on the head some more...

I liked the dead carnival...the scenes with Claire and her old boyfriend were nice...when he mentioned he much preferred death to life I thought Claire might want to join him...I didn't think you needed to go to the bathroom in heaven...who knew?...and her dead baby with Lisa was a bit creepy...at least it wasn't a fetus...

I can't believe Rico was so naive as to not understand the ways of the world .... I didn't buy that... she didnt' even offer him a lapdance???...also getting tired of the whole sister-in-law thing...I could see the stripper coming back as a stalker/blackmailer...

I wish they would get back to showing more interaction with the "stiff of the weeks" family...they gloss over that so much now...almost like they are sorry they have to include a death at the beginning of each episode now that they started it....

Don't really care anymore about David/Keith...glad they are together...whatever...

Can't wait to see more of Brenda...she's my favorite on the show now...

I did the exact same thing then watched it this morning. The final scene on Tivo, showing Lisas date of birth and death was the final scene. It went right to credits after that. Most of the episodes went about 50 minutes or less. This one went 60.2 :)

Posted by: Kevdog

I don't think this was a "classic" episode, but it had its moments.

Looking back at the beginning of the season, when Nate was in a coma after surgery, he "dreamed" a lot of things about his life with Lisa that eventually came true. But he also pictured a life with Brenda. When they jumped ahead to him and Lisa married, I assumed that meant the stuff he dreamt about Brenda wouldn't come true; an either/or kind of thing. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe it was a Part 1, Part 2 kind of thing.

Anyway, I agree that Dudley Smith is definitely trouble. (Geez, didn't Ruth see L.A. Confidential?)

I think Claire is far and away the most honest character on the show. Her performance in the finale was brilliant.

As for Lisa, I'm glad she's gone, too. It was just too painful to watch Nate pretend that he was in love with her. Even his grief is more about guilt than love. I'm sure the circumstances of her death will be revealed next season. My guess it was accidental (she fell off the rocks in Santa Cruz and drowned/brained herself) or suicide. I definitely think she'll be back to torment Nate in some ethereal form.

Keith and David are just another boring, dysfunctional couple. Enough already.

Rico needs to grow a pair.

Good ep, especially for the season finale, which we all know can be the one of the hardest to get right.

Was season 2 as good as season 1? No.
Was any 15 minute span of SFU season 2 better than all of Sopranos season 4? Yes.
Will I look forward to season 3? Yes.
Will it be on the air again BEFORE Sopranos season 5? Yes (they don't slack for 68 months)
Is a bad ep of SFU still better than 80% of the stuff I TiVo? Yes.

Excellent episode - excellent season.

So when do the new episodes start? A year from now? Someone had said June - is that right? A full year? Crow.

If the schedule holds true we won't get a new episode of SFU until March/April 2004. The Sopranos Season 5 is shooting now (pun intended) and will be the anchor of HBO's Fall lineup.

I don't know if you realize it or not but this was the third season of SFU.

This is very true, and if you go back an watch it again you will notice that the child in the Brenda scenes looks to be about 4 or 5 years old, older than Maya is now, although I think it was a boy, does anyone have it saved?
- Craig

Posted by: Cletus

Don't worry, you'll catch it in the reruns.

Posted by: jerobi

Wow, that was season 3 of SFU? I stand corrected. I was one of the people who picked up season 1 in reruns right before season 2, so I guess my brain must be kinda fried on the seasons.

I give it more credit as a season 3 finale.

Posted by: steelcurtain

Overall, I thought it was a great episode. Best line of the show:

"F*** you car, now you're locked."

The downward spiral of Nate was inevitable, and I'm still convinced that Lisa killed herself. I'm kind of hoping she was bludgeoned to death by an axe murderer, but...I doubt we'll ever find out what really happened to her. I bet they move on next season. Peter Krause is one of my favorite actors, and I felt that he really shined this week.

The first half of S3 was really boring to me, glad to see they picked things up at the end and recovered. Now, if they'd just release S2 on DVD, I'd be a happy camper.

I acouldn't agree more.

I finally caught up on SFU and have watched the last ep.

So... what ever happened to Claire's ex-boyfriend. I mean, all season they're setting him up as some wacked-out VanGogh wanna-be and then nadda. He just disappears.

Did I miss something?

Posted by: brott

Ok, I'm really late. I just watched the last four episodes in the last 2 nights. I'm pretty certain that I missed 3 or 4 episodes of the show in the middle and, quite frankly, it didn't matter that I missed them.

I watched the early part of Season 3 and it was cumbersome to watch. I was dissapointed, because I had loved the first 2 seasons. I'm glad that it did pick up, though. The final four episodes were very well written and moved along at the right pace (perhaps it was because I watched them all together). After worrying earlier, I'm looking forward to next season.

I think this was an okay season of a terrific show. I thought the finale was the best ep of the season. A few of my thoughts on the ep, the season, and on the show as a whole:

I never did, don't now, and don't expect in the future to care about David and Keith. David is a riveting character when he interacts wiht the rest of the family members, but he and Keith have no on-screen chemistry at all.

I miss the integration of the dead people into the episodes, too.

Rico is a great character caught up in a boring storyline.

The whole Ruth/Arthur thing was hard for me to buy, but I like her with George, and I think it will give her character a promising new direction.

I love Lilly Taylor, but I'm glad her character is gone. I look forward to Nate and Brenda being onscreen together more next season, even if she is contending with her new neighbor as well.

I hated the art teacher (both as a character and as an actor), but I liked Russell a lot.

I think Claire is possibly the most amazing television character I've ever seen. I'm completely mesmerized by her every time she's on the screen. It's almost impossible for me to imagine that Lauren Ambrose is not Claire in real life. I can't get over her.

One thing I liked about this season was how Lisa's disappearance, and the accompanying emotions, was played out over multiple episodes. So many other shows would have plotted that to occur and be resolved within 1 to 1.5 episodes -- which really doesn't allow enough time to present/realize how extreme the pressure can become, nor how the affected can meltdown and lash out.

This subplot was very well done.

Sopranos was just recently pushed back to Fall 2004, right? Looks like my joke was more on target than I thought!

Posted by: dfbills

Can someone give a blow-by-blow of the end for us suckers who didn't pad the show?

Mine cut off right after Nate showed up at Brenda's.

Posted by: Thom

Probably doesn't rate being in spoiler quotes, but just in case...

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

If you mean it cut off when Brenda opened the door, and Nate was standing there all bloodied up:

There was a pause while they just looked at each other without speaking...then she stepped back opening the door further, he stepped in, and she closed the door.

End of episode, end of season.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

You forgot one thing, Thom.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The VERY final scene was the white screen with Lisa's name and date of birth/death.
