Two gripes:
1. Just show the price, Amazon. I'm not buying this from you specifically because you jerk people around with forcing it to be put in one's shopping-cart, then deleted, just to find out the price.
2. A friend has had bad juju with two different Apex players overheating and skipping, despite adapting some of the cooling tricks here. Fair warning.

$189, not bad...I wonder if it's just a VCR timer like the Panasonic HS2 (without the burner)...

I don't know if this is the case here or not, but... often web retailers are forced to do this kind of "price available only when in shopping cart" business to comply with contractual obligations they have with the suppliers. Companies like Sony will dictate minimum advertised prices for their products, and any authorized Sony dealers have to comply or lose their authorization status. If they want to sell an item for less than that minimum price, they use this trick to get around it.

I like what I have seen from Apex so far, they make things so cheap they are almost disposable. I just picked up an AD-1200 for $49 and it plays everything I can throw at it, even karaoke CD+G disks.
And I got a 21" Apex TV at the grocery store, it's about a year old and still holding up fine.
Most of their DVD players are hackable. Interestingly though, unlike TiVo's, you can have drastically different guts inside of units with the same model numbers. So some AD-1200's are more hackable than others :)

Yep, almost certainly a MAP workaround.
I really don't see how MAP clauses in contracts are not illegal price fixing. Sounds the same to me.

Apex makes nice cheap "almost disposable" A/V consumer products. Great for the kids Bedroom. My youngest kid had a great school you. So I hooked her up with a Apex 20" color tv and a DVD player both for just over a 100 buck. Who would have thunk it. All my kids have Apex stuff no problems yet.
Yeah their dad is cheap :D

I have read a number of times that Apex is the world's largest selling DVD player brand, not sure if that is true or not, but I sure see a lot of Apex DVD players in stores. Everybody I know that owns one is happy with it. I would not hesitate to buy Apex brand products when the price/features make it a good value. I started a thread about this DVR 2 months ago since it looked like a good deal and it appears it is finally available.

Note they also are doing a DVD recorder (link on the same page at amazon if you go to the one originally posted).
I just hope they do a combined DVD recorder/hard drive recorder to be another competitor to the DMR-HS2 and RD-X2. Based upon the prices of these units (though they're currently vaporware), the price'll go way down..
New news.. According to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/show...hreadid=265449, the DVD recorder is available now at Sears. $15 more than amazon's (not currently available) price, btw.

The Nerd-Out forum is devoted to hacking cheap DVD players by APEX, Mintek and others. It's lightly travelled, but usually has good info. I'm sure they'll be discussing it heavily after the product is launched.
