Out of Order

I was surprised that no-one has started a thread discussing this new show, but since we're all TiVo owners, perhaps that's because you're all watching it tonight. :)
Anyway, FWIW I enjoyed it - it is a little thirtysomething-plus, and its a little hard to pity people living in bazillion dollar homes in Pacific Palisades driving Merc SLKs, but the writing was mostly sharp and acting generally excellent, as one would expect from this kind of cast.
Nothing dramatically new here - I was a little concerned at the beginning when Eric Stoltz was having conversations with the animals - although this shtick recurred a little later, it just seemed out of place, and lifted from some ABC Friday night family show.
I loved the ecstasy segment, with the fixed camera position on ES as he zooms around the room.
And did anyone notice that was Peter Bogdanovich as the movie director they were working for?
Anyway, 3 1/2 stars out of 5 and I'm willing to give the next episode a look.

There's a mid-week encore episode that is apparently an unedited version. I figure I'll wait for that episode, and I suspect a lot of other people are too. My guess is that come the second half of the week there'll be a lot more talk.

I enjoyed it. The season pass is definitely sticking around for now. The animal stuff didn't bother me because I live in a house full of beasties, and umm.... Well I don't want to sound like a complete lunatic. ;)
Mallory sure has developed some cleavage.

I TiVo'd it because of Justine Bateman, Kim Dickens, and Felicity Huffman. Don't know if I will actually watch it.

In what way was this airing edited?
Posted by: Dignan
It looks like there are three different running times for the pilot: 1:45, 1:55 and 2:00. Last night had a running time of 1:45, tonight at 7pm is the 2:00 episode. I haven't seen the show but I am looking forward to it.

Lori,
I don't know much about what editing/cutting went on in the episode airing last night, but there's been a lot of talk on the season pass alerts board about an unedited showing based on an AP article.
The article says:
"Out of Order," a five-part drama starring Eric Stolz and Felicity Huffman, bows 10 p.m. Sunday. A more explicit version of the 90-minute episode, with nudity and sex, will be shown June 4 at 11:35 p.m.
I don't know if this means that this airing will just have a few extra body parts or if it will be the director's original vision before Showtime cut it up to make it more "viewer friendly." Either way since some additional sex/language won't bother me I figure I might as well wait till that June 4th viewing.
Posted by: Lori
Hmmm. Well, the version that I watched had plenty of nudity and what I would consider to be fairly explicit sex, making me even more curious about the unedited one. I mean, I'm not sure what else they can show! :) And this is from a girl that watches Queer as Folk every week, so I am not just being a prude. :)
In any case, I'll record the longer version to see what the differences were.
Posted by: Tori
I noticed the different running times but assumed it was just Showtime's annoying inability to keep their guide date accurate. There are times when I miss the end of QAF and have to record it again, and other times when I get 20 minutes of junk after it is over.
However for extra sex and nudity I will be forced to record it again. ;) I haven't even deleted the first run because somebody wanted me to tape it for them. I can double check for differences. I am hoping for more ES nude, and less of him doing that dancing.

Yes I was able to find some differences.
Any actual runtime difference was negligible though, and the different times listed in the guide was just the typical Showtime scheduling nonsense.

I'll have to "research" that myself. ;)

What were the differences?

I can't really go into detail because it was more explicit.
During his fantasy pool scene with the Fast Times music playing there was a lot more detail in the final part of it.
During the sex scene more time was spent with certain activities and there was more shots of the bodies and movement instead of the faces.
There was one strange thing, they used a different shot when he was removing her underwear as they cut from the side view to the view from behind it was no more explicit, but it caused a jump instead of a smooth, one of those things where his arm was in one position, switch angles and it is in a completely different position, cut worked fine in the other version.
Which one did you see?

Running multiple cuts is a stupid thing to do. Not least of all because I missed the longer version. If Showtime wants my loyalty they'll have to do better than that. At least make the first airing the premium one, not some random mid-week airing.
Posted by: Tori
I don't get it. It was more explicit, but I really can't imagine anyone who was not offended by the tamer version being offended by the second version. It isn't as if one is family friendly and the other they stuck some porn in.
Does anyone know if they are actually planning to do two versions of each episode?

I'm watching it in peices. (TiVo has killed my attention span, I can't sit down for 2 hours and watch a show any more)
I'm liking it a lot so far. Felicity Huffman's scene where she confronts her parents was very well acted.
The multiple cuts is dumb, especially since there is no indication in the guide data that one is censored. If they are going to do it, they need to make it more obvious so those of us who don't want the chopped version can be sure to avoid it.

Lane Smith! Lane Smith!
Actually, I found the Felicity Huffman stuff a bit overdramatic. The scene with her parents was well-acted, but didn't draw me in. I was sitting on my hands, waiting for them to come back to Eric Stoltz' "situation."
Incidentally, I was amazed at what they got away with in the (unedited) pool scene. Even for a premium, I would have to say it pushed the envelope a little. I wonder whether it was real or created in the digital domain?

Really? I don't think I would have given it much thought at all if I wasn't watching it specifically looking for differences. I am still shocked by some of the language that shows up now on the major networks, because I've been conditioned for those to be cleaned up. It is to the point now that when they air a movie they edit language out that the tv series on the same network are getting away with saying. On the premium channels though I expect the material to be shown as created and not cleaned up for content at all.

I didn't watch the edited version, so maybe it was in there too. What I am referring to is that while they are underwater she (spoiler protected for sensitive viewers):
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
gives him a "hand job." As they are both nude at the time, it obviously leaves nothing to the imagination :)
The scene is only a couple of seconds, but I'm not certain it wouldn't have been enough to get an NC-17 in the theater.
Posted by: Tori
It would definitely have gotten an NC-17 in the theater, but I've seen NC-17 movies on the premium channels. What you mentioned could not be seen during the tamer version, and actually it looked a little strange. The scene was the same, but the whole lower portion of the screen was blackened in a manner that looked like a stylistic choice, rather than a black censor box, and yet looked unnaturally dark. I'm not convinced that the edited version wouldn't have gotten and NC-17 rating if submitted.

I'm curious about the point raised in edc's post (in the spoiler/decency tags) ..
Can anyone who saw the "tamer" version speak up and mention if that bit was in there?
That was the only thing that I thought would be controversial enough to cause the multiple versions ..

 I thought I did mention it?
You could not see what was put in the spoiler tags in the tamer version. The scene was still there, but the lower half of the screen was very dark you could not see the lower half of their bodies.
There were also differences in the sex scene later. I went into more detail on that in the earlier post but then edited it for content.

The edited version aired again Sunday night. I tuned in for some of it. The pool scene "felt" quite different - less illicit. If I hadn't seen the alternate cut, I would've thought that all that happened was (probably not necessary, but jic):
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
A little groping (him to her), and the brief bout of underwater aerobics.
Posted by: DLiquid
I thought this was good. I saw the edited version, though I wish I'd read this thread earlier so that I could have recorded the other version.
So this is only five parts? Will there be a second season or is this just a mini-series?
Posted by: innocentfreak
Damn I thought I recorded the right one, but after seeing the flashback on the pool scene I realized I did not. It was very obviously blacked out on the bottom half.
Posted by: Tori
I enjoyed the second episode and will be keeping the sp. Does anyone know whether all of the episodes will have two versions?
I also watched the Making Of. They showed clips from other TV families, even "Family Ties" clips from their show were completely edited no nudity at all.
They said they shot the pool scene the very first day of shooting when they didn't know each other very well. ES also commented that the pool had so much chlorine that he really couldn't see her when his eyes were open under water.

I see that the pilot will be on again this Saturday night. No idea how to tell which version it is though. I was also wondering about other versions of the other episodes.

I thought the second episode was very good.

I'll just revive this thread...I really enjoyed last night's episode. I think that this is definately one of the best written and acted series I've seen recently! I'm definately addicted!
Posted by: NatasNJ
I agree. Great epsiode. Show seems to drag a little here and there but overall it is a great show. I really like the characters and everything. I just can't believe that Eric has resisted Malary for so long. But it looks like next week that resistance fails.

I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. The constant barage of radio ads pushed me away rather than grabbing my interest. Plus the ads were just plain horrible.
Posted by: ClutchBrake
I couldn't get into it. If Justine Bateman gets a more revealing role though... then I'll start watching again.

You might want to watch next week's episode, there's a slight chance that more will be revealed. :D
Posted by: gadgetgrrll
I haven't seen too many posts discussing each week's episode, so I wanted to get a feel for what others were thinking of this show as it goes on.
Initially I wasn't really sure I liked it. I had zero sympathy for Eric Stoltz's character, but as I continue to watch I think that this is really one of the most unique shows on TV in the way it's directed and written. I also feel that Felicity Huffman and Stoltz are doing great in their roles.
Interested to hear what others are thinking.

Season Finale on 6/30.
Posted by: edc
The conceit of Eric Stoltz talking about the production and sale of the "movie that is his life" is brilliant. Everything from the focus group in the second episode to the music video last week were dead perfect.
I guess the real world equivalent of "that bear movie" was "Deep Blue Sea."
Posted by: NatasNJ
Why such a short season? Is this a ONE and done thing. Or is it coming back down the road with new episodes.
I like it. Sucks that is is almost done already.
Posted by: andyf
Yup! Only 6 episodes. I think it was a one time deal.

I've really been enjoying this series. His whole "My Life as a Movie" thing is brilliant. The studio notes where especially funny. "Like I said, it's a hard sell."

But how? And why? There are way too many loose ends to just end the thing. Plus, the execs in the episode kept referring to it as the end of the season, not the series.
They're running from the beginning starting next Monday. Any clues to look for in the description or running time to determine whether they're showing the original cut or the "spicier" one?

I think that's kind of the point. Real life doesn't have neat ending points. You never know, but I see them having trouble being able to get the cast together for any subsequent seasons, even ones this brief.
Besides, following the real-life counterparts you can finish half the story. No telling how the other side ends.
Maggie Gyllenhaal was an interesting mention. Her path doesn't seem to have crossed with the Powers' in RL.

There was one that I saw in every episode except that one.
list of signs:Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Pilot - sign on the vending machine
The Art of Loss - sign on the elevator
Losing My Religion - sign on the drinking fountain (in Hungarian)
Follow the Rat - ?
Put Me in Order - bag on the parking meter
If anyone spotted it in Follow the Rat, I'd like to know where it was.

Can you go into more detail here? I assumed this was based on the creators' real lives but I have no clue who they are or what their real-life story is.

I sent email to Showtime asking if Out of Order was a mini-series or a real series that would be back for another season.

The writers and executive producers of "Out of Order" are Donna and Wayne Powers, mid-level Hollywood types married for nearly two decades with a ten year old son. Their biggest commercial success to date is a nature-themed horror film ("Deep Blue Sea") which is wholly unlike anything else they have done. Donna Powers is bi-polar, and suffered from depression and drug addiction. Need any more dots to connect ;)
The two have claimed they went through everything except the infidelity, labeling that bit as "wholly fictional." Is it really, really so? Who knows. To a certain extent, who cares. Its none of our business.
If we are to assume the fiction follows the reality, then the fact that the Powers got through it, stayed together, continued working and living together, and found some more professional success ("The Italian Job," and, yes, "Out of Order") reveals Mark and Lorna's fate.

Just got around to watching the second to the last episode yesterday, the one with the sauna scene. Wow. Holy cow. Man. Mallory! It's a keeper.

I'll admit I didn't watch the show but TiVo'd an episode for that scene only. ;)

Mallory's Mammory's were somewhat smaller uncovered than I was expecting based on the T-shirts.
Shame everyone else got a nice sex scene she did not.

The scene was when the two couples were in the sauna playing Truth or Dare.

I just watched the finale. Great show really, I'm looking forward to the next season. I like that they really didn't end anything at all, and just left it undecided.
I have to admit, I was quite (pleasantly) surprised at Felicity Huffman's nude scenes. They had gone to considerable lengths not to show much of her up to that point.
Posted by: LooseWiring
I agree, Mr. Do'Urden, I wrote off the possibility of her doing a nude scene from the get go.
I loved how unbelievably snippy Mallory got when she got turned down by Eric Stolz's character.
All in all a great series. But I will be greatly pissed off if this turns out to be a "mini-series" rather than an actual series. They left too many cliffhangers.
Posted by: tonyoci
It's tough to see how the story could be carried on into another "season". The story was based on truth and mostly ended. You would have to have a whole new interesting storyline to do it again with the same characters.

Good news for those wanting more Out of Order. While this still doesn't necessarily mean more Out Of Order, the show was in a list of upcoming DVD releases. The interesting part: it is being marketed as "Out of Order: The Complete First Season"
I am in the "don't want more of a good thing" camp, though.
Posted by: bworrell
I finally got around to start watching... I was wondering why my season pass wasn't picking up any more episodes.
On the showtime boards people received an email confirming that this was a one-time-only thing. It's been cancelled.
