Keen Eddie (Spoilers)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: TiVoLance

Well I enjoyed this first show. Liked the actors, the dog, and the storyline. Let's hope it stays funny. That bit with the swingers club was bizarre though. So does Eddie have a curse to have everything go wrong? Eddie was walking down the street with a dirty sock tied to his head, a carton on his bare foot, and getting hit my that car sideview mirror made me laugh. Kinda of like in Snatch with the criminals that couldn't do anything right to save their lives.

What did y'all think?

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Totally inspired by Snatch. I love Snatch. Definitely SP material.

Posted by: MarkofT

I liked it. Has that fast moving choppiness that is all the rage. Has good detective work. Has good comedy bits. All in all a very nicely done show.

<cynic>And will be canceled by FOX in 6 weeks.</cynic>

Lots of little things in this show that you don't get instantly, like the name.

The swingers part fit in really well if you look at it. They just introduced the London cops. Snobby and stuck up is the feeling from them. Then the assigned partner knocks off work at 6 in the middle of somethinge, hauls Eddie to a swingers club where the partner lies about being married to get in. Points out that the London cops may not be what they seem on the outside and Eddie isn't as much a fish out of water as it may seem. The club also gives a nice coincidence for Eddie's next lead, which would have slipped by anyone not as keen as he is.

I really liked it also. I just set up a season pass. I thought the acting was actually very good and the plot was interesting and funny. Hopefully more smart, funny episodes like this will continue!

Well, to me, the show tries a bit too hard to be hip and edgy. And, I had to turn on closed captioning to understand the locals. I thought that the dog was humorous.

But, Sienna Miller is just so shagalicious that I'll tune in again just to see what she's up to. :)

I enjoyed it and I thought it might be because I am from London so I am glad that others liked it. I am glad they used real Brits and filmed it in London.

That long haired cop is an odd choice but it worked well. I loved the soccer commentary and replays on the fights. I noticed that Alexi Sayle (famous in the UK) who played Rudy was in the regular credits so I hope he is recuring character. I did not like the fast cut stuff they do.

Some of it made me laugh out loud though I cannot remember exactly what now.

When I lived in the UK you would sometimes here the F*** word on the TV but never the word Wanker. They love to throw that in when the show is made in the US. I always remember Phil Collins saying it on Miami Vice when I was a kid and I almost fell out my chair with shock.

I enjoyed it too - I like the way they used British music:

- intro to "A Message to you Rudy" by the Specials during the scene when the 3 bad guys bring Eddie to Rudy

- "One Step Beyond" by Madness when Eddie chases Rudy through the market

I'll wait until after next week's episode to set up the SP, but so far so good!

One last thing - the British police captain (or whatever his rank is) - is he the same guy from the last few James Bond movies and "Prime Suspect" from PBS??

From the website:

COLIN SALMON
(Superintendent Nathanial Johnson)

It is him, check him out on the show website

I liked it too, hope it keeps it up.

Posted by: joeinma

I thought the show was great! Pretty funny; as a soccer nut, liked the soccer game bit. Someone mentioned a carton stuck to Eddie's foot...it was a flat soccer ball...I think you see him running down the street at the very beginning and the soccer ball rolling near him...and then you see the flat ball with his foot in it.

I did not see the credits, who was the blond roommate? I've always had a thing for girls with British accents...SHAG-A-DELIC BABY!

Sadly, the ratings were not good..as the show finished 4th in it's time slot and lost 30% of it's audience from American Juniors.

I haven't watched it yet, but I tivoed it. Glad to hear all but 1 of you thought it was really good.

Posted by: bdowell

Add another to the liked it pile.... Looking forward to more episodes... Hopefully Fox will break their own trend and give this show a chance to build an audience before they screw it up or try it in a different spot on the sched.

Posted by: spartanstew

Since I'm out of town, I called my wife on Monday and asked her to get an SP for this show since I read some good reviews. Unfortunately, she forgot to do it. I have the SP set up now, but missed the first episode. Does anyone care to recap the episode for me so that I will know what's going on when I watch the second episode? You should probably use spoiler tags.

Thanks,

Stew

Sorry but here I go again

Episode Guide is on web site

http://www.fox.com/keddie/episodes/101.htm

In summary

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Eddie trusts a girl in New York who screws him over and causes a huge drug bust to go wrong. All the drugs are on there way to England so Eddie is sent there to track them down.

He ends up sharing a flat with a girl due to a mix up

He teams up with a English cop.

He gets kidnapped and warned to stay away.

Eventually they find that the "bad guy" was an actor hired to play a role to fool the cops. They find the drugs but not the girl or the bad guys

Yup... I liked it as well. Too bad American Embassy is not still around. That and Keen Eddie could have done some nice cross-over episodes. Let's hope Fox keeps it around longer than 4 weeks. Definitely a choice for a Season Pass.

My feelings exactly. I guess I'm too old for this kind of direction.

But I loved Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels which were clearly the inspiration for Keen Eddie. But if you try to pack a movie's worth of direction into a 40 minute show, it's bound to irritate (YMMV).

I'll give it one more chance to calm down a bit...

I watched Keen Eddie last night and liked it. The characters were interesting, the dialogue was witty, and I agree with someone that said FOX would cancel it within weeks. But I set up a season pass for it and I look forward to the next ep.

Is American Embassy the show where the girl works in the Embassy and she just moved there or something and there's a CIA guy who won't tell her where he goes sometimes? Or am I confusing this with a movie I watched?

That's American Embassy. Correct!

Posted by: sieglinde

American Embassy really sucked. This show is better.

Anyone have an online source for this? It snuck up on me and I missed scheduling it.

This is why you set up a First Run Only, Auto Recording Wishlist for the keyword Pilot* at a high priority. It's amazingly effective in getting new shows with only a few false positives. Sorry to say, I can't claim credit for this because I got this hint from the forum. If you review your wishlists occasionaly, it can also help you find the first episode in a old series that is being repeated in syndication.

-Tommy

Posted by: IndyJones1023

Dear God, I wouldn't want to clog up and potential lose shows due to recording every pilot that comes along!

Posted by: Fustanella

Yeah, I think I'll try that at my "filler" priority and see what turns up. Often, pilots are rerun, and if anything TC is on the bleeding edge of alerting people to good shows.

They used "wanker" on the British Coupling "Inferno" episode...

BTW, who played the secretary to the Police Commander? Alot of people are saying it was Helen Baxendale (Ross' 2nd wife on Friends), but it only marginally looked like her.

Posted by: tonyoci

They all use F*** on coupling and I am sure things have changed in the 10 years since I was there. Remember there is always an exception to prove the rule.

That they did, but one shot really confused me.

You're looking across Westminster Bridge toward Big Ben's tower from the bus stops on the south end of the bridge. The camera then pans right to the building across the street with a sign on it..."Scotland Yard". That is nowhere near the real police headquarters.

Or could I have misread the sign the producers put on the building?

Posted by: tonyoci

I have no idea what is there but that would be the good old TV world. Just as long as they don't start making London foggy I would be happy.

Oh Yeah and not everyone eats "cockles"

T

Posted by: sieglinde

I have been to London three times. Once just at the airport. Once for a week in the winter, No Fog. Once for a week in the summer. I thought I was in Santa Barbara with double-decker buses it was so hot and clear.

So I have never seen London fog. (Not a good sampling. How is the weather in London regarding fog?_

Posted by: tonyoci

I lived in London for 10 years and I have no recollection of EVER seeing fog. I think the fog was Victorian thing related to the heavy industry at the time. Smoke not fog.

Ha, you should see how much fog we get in Santa Barbara in June, it's actually called June Gloom.

First of all, I really liked the show! I just got around to watching it last night. The blond roommate is totally hot! The club was strange and just seemed thrown in. The dog is pretty cool!

What are "cockles"?

So, how do I keep it from recording the stuff like Top Gun, JAG etc that have the word "pilot" as in airplane pilot in the description?

Also, do I need the * after the word "pilot"? If so, how do I do that?

Posted by: tonyoci

Cockles are a sea food item similar to clams. They are dug out of river beds. They are chewy like clams/oysters. They are usually sold picked on markets in London though again they are a bit of a cliche. You can find them but it's not like everyone eats them.

I used to live in Ventura county. Since I have Seasonaly Affective Disorder, I got depressed every summer. We called it the Marine Layer.

I now live in the desert.

I watched it this weekend.
Parts of it were funny but damn, the editing was annoying and so was the music (I don't like Orbital).....
I'll give it a couple of more episodes but I don't find Eddie that interesting so far....

Posted by: Fustanella

Fellow weekend watcher. I found it amusing in points - seeing Alexai Sayle was a treat, last time I caught him was on Young Ones - and the music he ran to was sheer Madness. :) We'll see if it stays in SP-land after the next epsiode or two.

Posted by: gjustice

I setup the SP, watched a bit of it last week, got lost, nuked the SP, BUT KEPT the recording. Watched it yesterday afternoon and put back the SP!!!

I guess I was too tired to pay attention the first time, but it's definitely interesting. Not to mention Fiona is HOTTT!!!

Of course I liked Fox's last 3 week wonder too!

Okay, since I can't find it online anywhere, I can get by with just the premise until it's repeated. Why is a NYC cop working in England and why is he allowed to carry a gun?

It is not a soccer ball.

Looks more like an antifreeze bottle, or something else they'd thrown out of the trunk to change the tire.

The rant:

Whaddya mean you can find it on line, I posted the link in this thread in response to your previous post, I also posted my own quick summary.

The answer:

He screwed up a drug bust, the drugs ended up in the UK. He was sent as kind of a punishment, he was asked to stay for a while after doing a good job.

Posted by: Swirl_Junkie

I'm pretty sure you could find this on bittorrent if you really wanted to see the episode.

What about packing heat? All UK cops don't carry weapons.

Posted by: sieglinde

The cop in front of Number 10 Downing Street showed me his weapon and that was 30 years ago.

Not sure what you mean, I cannot remember if he used a gun or not in the first ep. Some, but not many, UK cops do carry guns. I have no memory of whether Eddie or the Brit cops had guns.

T

Posted by: JYoung

Eddie and Pippin didn't pull any guns but that doesn't mean they weren't carrying guns.

"Wanker" was used on Men Behaving Badly more than a few times.

I seem to recall the detective squad did carry weapons. The SWAT team that raided the American/Scottish bar certain did. ;)

Posted by: tonyoci

A SWAT team having guns would be normal but I have not seen anything to suggest that Eddie or Pippin carry guns on normal business, though there has been nothing to suggest that they do not either.

Indy - The first two episodes were posted on a.b.m a few days after each one aired. Should still be available at Easynews or one of the other premium newsservers with good retention. Sorry, but I already watched and deleted them, so I can't help out beyond giving you a pointer. FWIW, though, after downloading and watching the first 2, I set up a SP.

I had been out of town and missed this message. The "First run only" option will filter most of the old shows or movies that contain the word pilot. I usually set this as medium level wishlist below the shows I always want it to record and above the news and other filler shows. I also tend to scan the Todo list occasionally and will delete false positives. This wishlist doesn't pick up a lot of false positives.

The "*" after pilot is not needed to pick up pilot episodes, but I like shows on discovery, etc, that involve aircraft and pilot* is an often used word in the descriptions. When setting up a wishlist, press the "slow" key on the remote and it will insert the "*".

The second episode sucked. I am out.

Things are changing with the British police:

London police are starting to arm:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/2589339.stm

Scotland Yard (where I think Eddie is working) has 1750 of their 26000 officers authorized to use firearms:

http://www.time.com/time/europe/mag...-409517,00.html

Posted by: Jon J

The "German" episode pretty much answered the armament question. Eddie and his Met partner had weapons all the time.
