"In addition, the new recorder, based on the TiVo Series2 service platform, is equipped with two USB expansion ports for future connectivity to peripheral devices like digital cameras and CD players. TiVo subscribers will be able to access future entertainment services that TiVo may develop like music, digital photos, video party games and broadband video on demand , using these USB ports. "

I think some of them (i.e. party games and iVOD) got scrapped, and the rest were refined into HMO. Specifically TiVo decided that they did not want to waste your TiVo's hard drive space hosting copies of your digital music and photos, so instead they worked up the network terminal method found in HMO. Because of that allowing devices such as digital cameras, and CD players, to connect to the TiVo's USB ports was unnecessary.

A big part of that announcment was getting third parties involved in TiVo development. It may be that they simply didn't get the third party commitments to make those things happen. TiVo also did surveys, which probably indicated that users were more interested in the kind of functionality that has ended up in HMO than plugging cameras and CD players into their TiVo.

Now DVD burners...
