How to make upgraded drive quieter?

I did my last upgrade about two years ago, upping a Sat-60 to two MAXTOR 80's. AT the time, there was some utilility one could run either MAXTOR specific or not, which would make the drive run quieter. Now, these days I can really hear a drive. Could be a drive dying, but I think it is just the MAXTOR.
Anyone know what that Util was / is and how to get it on the drives easiest.

?
thanks

The Maxtor utility is amset and can be downloaded from the Maxtor site.

Hey, any idea if this helps with the sound? And impact on performance?

I just used AMSET with the /quiet option on my Maxtor 120GB 7200rpm a week or so ago. It runs much quieter, possible a bit cooler and no slower (atleast not noticeably).

It was my new A drive, and the old 80 became the B. Overall noise is only slightly higher, but seeks are half as noisy as before the AMSET was run.

If your drive supports it (most newer ones do) - do it! And it won't affect data on the drive either. Just remember to make a boot floppy and boot from it, not from an XP or 2000 partition!
