First of all hi everyone!
I want to get in on the Tivo craze, so I thought I'd run a few things past you and see what you think. After some reading (there's plenty of great stuff in the hinsdale faq and a few other "notes" in the forums), I decided to pick up a series 1 tivo, probably a sony svr-2000. I saw a couple going on ebay that were being sold w/o the hard drive. It's my understanding you need a hard drive with a valid, working image to start with, correct?
I've got plenty of plans for the tivo, but I'm going to work my way up slowly, the first project being simply to upgrade the drives.
Anyone have a little list of some major newbie pitfalls that I could avoid, what not to buy, hardware brands that don't work well. I'll be hooking the tivo up to a digital cable box.
Thanks in advance :D

ok, well I answered my own question about the valid image, I see those can be "obtained" so that's not a big deal.
So I guess all I'm looking for now is some used tivo purchasing tips. Would you buy a unit with no drives? I'm mainly shopping ebay but if there is another place I should be looking please let me know.

hey guys, I don't mean to be rude here.. but after 23 or so views I know someone has to have some input..
I've read enough to know how to upgrade the drives, I just don't want to get screwed on my initial purchase..

Yes, i would buy a Tivo without Drives, if the Price is right.
All you need is a working Image, there is Threads here where to download one, make sure it is the correct image for your Model.
Then use the Hindsdale instructions, to restore from it.
Best of luck to 'ya.

Thank you, I've actually already got the image, glad to hear that'll work. It was actually the image for the srv-2000. Can I put that on any size drive, (I'm planning on hooking up 2 60GB drives.)

I guess no one has stated the obvious potential pot hole with this proposal...what if the Tivo you buy does not work when you put a new drive in it?
That is, it is impossible to verify the Tivo is fully working without having a drive in it.
