WIN98 won't boot from MFSTOOLS CD

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I burned the tools CD using DLA on my WIN/XP HP notebook, and ran compabitility utility so it could be read on a non-DLA PC. My WIN98 desktop can now see the CD (in Explore) and sees the filename as mfstools2noJ.iso. So far so good.

I changed my bios to boot CD first, then C drive. At boot time, I press ENTER at the Boot from CD prompt, but Windows still comes up. I was able to boot from the floppy with no problem, and got the Linux # prompt.

I want to to upgrade config #2 (replace 1 60 hr. drive with 2 145 hour drives) without trying to save recordings. Also, I haven't bought my new drives yet; I was just doing a dry run - so I haven't opened my PC and re-jumpered anything.

Two questions:

1. For this simple upgrade, do I lose any necessary tools booting from floppy instead of CD (I assume timeframes for processes increase).
2. If answer to #1 is "no", this is less important: how can I get my PC to boot from the tools CD?

60 hour Series 2 owner and wanting more...

You need to tell your cd writer software to burn a cd from an image file - not burn the file to the cd. The difference is that the .iso file contains an image that consists of several files and directories that should be burned to the CD rather than the .iso file itself. When you open your software to burn, look in the menus for an option that says something like 'burn cd from image file' and then everything should work fine.

IMHO it is not worth the trouble to make the CD and boot from it, if all you are going to do is backup/restore with mfstools. The floppy has served me well through 4 upgrades.:D

MFS Tools is the same on both the CD and the floppy. The only real difference is that the CD unlocks the TiVo drives when it boots, but floppy users have to use qunlock.

CYBORG: I re-burned my CD per your suggestion and it now boots to Linux just fine. Thanks for the quick response.

Spense, Robert S: I'll use the CD now since it's working and avoid having to qunlock, but thanks for the info.
