TNN's black bar
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

may be gone. I've been watching MXC and WWE's show tonight, and the bar is not there. I hope that they have removed it, and this is not an oversight. If so, there are some shows on TNN that I would like to watch, but won't because of the squish-o-vision that the bar creates. Ren and Stimpy, and later DS9. I do sometimes watch TNG, but only when they do the Trek Uncut because the bar is not there. Some of the WWE programming never carried the bar and I would watch it some. If it is gone, then a big  to Spike (I meant TNN please don't sue me) :p

WWE has a special agreement with TNN not to show the black bar during their programming, as far as I know. I don't think I've ever seen the black bar on while WWE programming is on.
However, you are right - I just turned on TNN, and they have a very respectable translucent 'bug' in the corner and no black bar. I guess all the gripes submitted to their request for comments on the SpikeTV website got through to them! Woo!

The bar is there during Heat.

Not there now during Real TV.

Get used to it...the bar will be coming to more channels...it is about the only way to get back at us...the TiVo user who fast forwards through their channels...
Networks have to rethink how they sell advertising once TiVo and other DVRs become more common...the sponsor message under the actual content is coming....trust me...

Well, if all channels start doing it, I'll have to block off the bottom of my screen.:) Hey, a new use for duct tape.

Well if they all do it, then some company with come out with a TV that detects whether there is a bar, and removes it automatically. And then they get into a bunch of legal squabbles with the networks

If it was a letter box showing of a program, it would not bother me that much, and even the network bug doesn't bother me except for bug like Fox News, it's the way they squish the picture. Everyone looks short and fat to me. I had a tv years ago when the picture tube was going out squished the picture, it had the same effect.

We already need it for the annoying news crawls on CNN, MSNBC, etc.

It's 3pm and no black bar.:) The corner logo is shades of gray and transparent.:)

Could it be, is it really gone forever? Only time will tell, but I hope the folks at Viacom finally got their heads out of their you know where and woke up to the fact people hated the black bar.

It was supposed to be gone for Spike. Because Spike is in turmoil over the lawsuit, a lot of the new work had to be put on hold. The removal of the black bar was one part of the change that stayed.

They're not mentioning the name Spike TV either, but twice during 7 Days (sans bar) they ran an ad that included a text reference to spiketv.com. Whoops! A reworked version of the ad now says thenewtnn.com instead.
And for some reason accessing spiketv.com redirects to spiketv-123.com which doesn't exist in my DNS here.

No banner bar or squished picture is good.
But, now they are blocking the lower third of the screen with animated (no sound) graphics touting upcoming shows. These come on just before the commercial break. Sheesh. :( :( :(

maybe someone poored coffee on the machine that makes it and broke it? ???? nah, there'd be a backup black bar machine. :)

But now they've gone to putting ads for their upcoming animated shows atop the bottom half of the screen just before commercial breaks, and are again squishing closing credits to the right and replacing their audio.

Yes they having starting putting pop ads on the bottom of the screen before commercials which is almost as annoying the only thing worse would be the black bar and the pop up ads.
