Ground Force without Alan Titchmarsh: Worth Watching?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Apparently Alan Titchmarsh has left BBC's garden makeover show Ground Force and Tommy Walsh & Charlie Dimmock seemed to have trouble containing their delight with his departure on last week's episode. Alan was one of the primary reasons that I watched GF and he seemed to be a good ringleader of a group that at times seemed to desperately need a strong leader. Last week's show was good from a garden makeover perspective but it was lacking the sense of humour that I have always loved it for. I'll probably watch a few new episodes but I know that it'll never be the same....

While Tommy was the brawn and Charlie was the soul... plus it was always Tommy was the builder, Charlie was sort of the water related stuff (features, water plants) and Alan was the horticulturist. They need another new host with plants knowledge and wit if Alan is gone permanently. Tommy and Charlie just are not hosts. But thanks to the schedule of BBC, there's only a total of six eps with just the two of them, plus whatever was done with the Ground Force America this past spring.

Does this mean more on-screen Charlie, in addition to her Garden Army? Ex-cellent.

Garden Army??? Is this a show that I've somehow missed?

In addition to being the primary horticulturalist (which Charlie also seemed to be at times), Alan was also the chief Landscape Architect. They always glossed over this bit in the first few minutes of each episode, but the fact that Alan did the site plan was no small part of the show.

However I must say that I stopped watching this show over a year ago. They ran out of episodes too quickly and I got tired of watching the same old ones over and over. And there are only so many garden makeovers that one can watch before one loses interest (Charlie notwithstanding)

So if Alan moves on, it won't change my viewing habits very much.

Mmm, "flame-haired goddess." That's the stuff.

Cool

Thanks Fustanella :D

They've added Kristy King to the mix. She had a few on camera moments on last week's ep but you never heard from her or saw her do anything really.

Charlie does well as motivator and presenter on "Garden Army" but Charlie and Tommy swapping off voiceovers was just disconcerting. Here's hoping the show finds its footing again.

cheers,

It doesn't seem the same without Alan but hopefully it will find it's footing and get better.

I had an SP for "Charlie's Garden Army" but deleted it after only two episodes. Too much discussion and not enough action. While I like Charlie, she pales as a host in comparison to Alan and has nowhere near his depth of knowledge. They chose Alan because he is the most famous gardener (horticulturist) in he UK and has written dozens of books, many before the series and a whole bunch since.

Tommy is a great carpenter and foil, but he is also not good at being a presenter as they are called in the UK.

What made GF work is the chemistry. I don't know why Alan left but I sure hope he comes back and this is only temporary.

Awwww......so sorry to hear Alan has departed. We love this show, but the chemistry between the three is what makes it work so well. Too bad....
