Where is the best place to buy cheap DVD-R media? Doesn't have to be name brand... so long as it works well.

Cheap DVD-R media usually doesn't work well. The last set I bought was a 50 pack spindle of Memorex 2x DVD-R for $89 from J&R.

I buy the princo's at allmediaoutlet.com. They're around .85 a peice now if you buy 100.

Never had a problem with them working in ps/2's or my dvd players.

they offer "trial" packs of 10 I believe, so you can test to see if the media will work on your dvd player, pc, whatever.

I'm a huge fan of the ACCU DVD-R Media at www.Meritline.com . I've not burned a single coaster on my Cendyne. Avoid the K-Hypermedia DVD-Rs like the plague unless you're burning files or movies well below the 4 GB threshold.

The problem for me isn't in the burning. The problem is in the playback compatibility. I bought 50 from cd-recordable.com just before they closed down and the domain was bought by someone else selling taiwan media. I burnt a whole bunch of DVD's on my Pioneer DVD-R burner. The burning went well, I had no problems. They were not 2x certified so they burnt at 1x. Not a problem for me.

However, I neglected to try playing them back in anything else. Months later I tried them in my Philips DVD-702 player, and it would play for about 20 minutes then pixellate, and then stop completely (think rain fade on DirecTV). I even went out and bought a brand new DVD player (Panasonic) which was labeled DVD-R compatible. No luck, this one refused to play the DVD's completely.

I then went to Circuit City and bought a single TDK DVD-R and tried it. It played flawlessly on both of my DVD players. By that time CD-Recordable.com had gone out of business, and there was no way I could get my money back. So I just trashed the remaining blank DVD-R's.

For the 1x discs, how long does it take to burn at that speed? Also, I assume that they likely work on most recorders, even though the compatibility chart doesn't include anything but the most popular recorders?

I bought a 50 pack of their private label DVD-R from shop4tech.com for $48.99 after reading about them here.
It came as two 25ea spindles. They've worked fine so far and I won't hesitate to order more from them when I'm done with these.

1x discs take about 45 mins to an hour to burn.

I've played my ACCUs on my Mintek, Cyberhome, Toshiba, Apex, and roommate's Sampo stand alones. Perfect playing everytime. The biggest problem I've found with the ACCUs is that Meritline was running out consistently and I'd find myself without media. This led me to the dreaded Hypermedias at Micro Center.

I've used Optodisc, Princo and Ritek on my Cendyne DVR-105, and also to playback on my Pioneer DV-250 standalone player, and I haven't had a coaster in almost 200 burns.

YMMV, of course. One disclaimer is that this Pioneer is known to play just about anything under the sun.

I bought mine a while back, I don't remember where. They were 100 for $60 and they work in everything I've tried them in. They also are pure white with no label, perfect for sharpies.

I've purchased OptoDisc, Accu, and "unbranded Maxells" from Meritline and they're all garbage. Either coasters or discs that burn fine but can't be played (without skipping, pixelation, or freezing) in a variety of standalones.

For non-namebrands, I will only use Riteks. About $1.25 each in bulk quantity.

It's just not worth the hassle to diagnose bad media. I'd rather spend the extra 40 cents.

Another Accu vote. Great, cheap media. I've never had a problem playing an Accu disc on any player that plays -Rs.
