My tivo missed it because it was unplugged at the time. Can anybody give a short recap? Thanks. :)

Looked like the typical American Idol results show. The kids sang "Kids in America" for the production number which was pretty good. Thankfully they didn't have these kids hawking some soft drink. Justin sang some song I FF'd through (Interesting... Debbie "Please call me Deborah" Gibson and Gladys were listed as judges in the credits, but Justin was listed as a guest judge). The top 5 contestants move on to the next round.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
A.J Melendez
Morgan Burke
Danielle White
Katelyn Tarver
Chauncey Matthews (top vote getter)

I can see Justin being the guest judge. This way they get to cycle all the AI contestants they have under contract, like Tamyra Gray, Rueben Studdard, Clay Aiken and possibly a couple of others.
I liked Deborah Gibson as a judge. I didn't always agree with Gladys Knight though. I thought she sometimes over praised or under praised someone.

It will be interesting to see how these judges stack up against the rather bland but otherwise likeable Randy and Paula from "American Idol". Simon of course, is in a league of his own and at times, singlehandedly carried the show this past season.
Gladys Knight was as good, if not better than any of the celebrities that sat in during the second season of AI (it was she who coined the nickname "Velvet Teddybear" describing ultimate champion Ruben Studdard), and Ms. Gibson (who, btw, has always preferred/used the name Deborah privately) has loads of class and personality and is the PERFECT match for this show, seeing as she still holds the Billboard title of having been the youngest person EVER to write, produce and perform a number one single.
In addition, Deborah is a great role model in that she has continued to do her thing on her terms, not falling into the drug and alcohol induced black hole that many performers who are so successful at such a young age (i.e..no "behind the music" fodder) securing work as a broadway headliner on many of New York's stages over the past ten years.
I haven't tuned in yet, but with the addition of these two judges, I just might set Tivo and take a look....

I agree - Deborah is an awesome judge. It's hard to judge kids, because nobody wants to criticize too hard. She strikes a great balance, when she needs to criticize. And I actually believe what she says.
I think that Gladys Knight comes off worse than she could, because it's hard being the 3rd judge. 2 others have already said what you want to say.
Overall, I think the judging is great. Although this week's Backstreet Boy or whoever he was was terrible. But I just ignored him. Or maybe I just like the judging because I find myself agreeging with them almost 100% - even on the little details.

I too, am impressed with how Deborah is able to strike a balance between positivities and reality. As far as judges go for EITHER American Juniors or "Idol", I'd GLADLY replace Randy "Dogg" Jackson with either Gladys Knight or preferably, Ms. Gibson.
I agree...Nick Carter was awful...but not nearly as bad as Lamont Dozier. Mary Wilson, mediocre in her own right, at least showed some spunk and flair.

I'd rather replace Paula than Randy. I like Randy!
From last night:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I can't believe Morgan wasn't in the top 3 last night. He had the best performance of the night. Of course you know everyone is going to vote for those sisters just because they're sisters. They are not bad but there's others that are just as good. No way was the winner last night the best performer of the night.

It's going to be really interesting to see how things turn out. Laria, I totally agree with you about who had the best performance 2 nights ago.
I wonder if the kids picked will actually make a good group. It takes a lot more than 5 kids who can sing to make a group. It takes 5 voices that can blend, but are different enough to be interesting. I'm fearful that we might not get a good gender balance in the group, which would be a shame. I've heard some great larger women's groups who have a great range, but when you're talking about a group like this, the girl with the lowest singing voice is not going to want to always be stuck singing the bass parts.
For the goal of a group, I think they would have been better off having the audience votes happen at an earlier point, and then let experts whittle the group down to 5. If they're interested in actually putting together a good group.
