adding another drive

We have a sony SAT-T60 DirecTV/Tivo unit. It works fine. We had another unit just like it, both Series !. It was damaged almost 1 year ago in a lightning storm. The hard drive was salvaged from it. How can we test this drive to see if it is still usable and what process do we use to install into our other receiver. I am concerned about the installation process since it is already set up with TIVO programming as opposed to a hard drive that is new. Thanks for any help.

This thread will give you all the info about upgrading. As for testing the drive, go to the manufacturer's website and download their diagnostic program and run it. If the drive is a Quantum, then download the Maxtor diagnostic program.

Download the Maxtor diagnostic utility as maharg18 suggests, then simply do a "low level format" to reformat the drive (assuming it passes the diagnostic tests, of course). Then you can treat it just like a "virgin" drive for your upgrade using Hinsdale's instructions.

Although doing a low-level format isn't a bad idea (arguably a useful verification of the drive, infact), it's not necessary for the upgrade. MFS Tools will over-write anything that's already on the disk.
