I wish really wishing the heterophobes got eliminated tonight. They are a couple of jerks, especially Chip. But I'll take the kid and his dad.
I didn't see where they fell so far behind though.
Posted by: maharg18
I agree. Either the jerks or the girl who's always bitching about wanting to be 50%, who's decided to name the other teams things like "the BFG's" and "The Mole". My guess would be they have names for her as well... She annoys me.
Posted by: cheerdude
I agree.... glad to see that the ATCers are still in it.
I thought this was one of the better episodes - probably since the action seemed to come fairly fast. Wonder if the models would of really let the other teams enter the area first if they hadn't complained that much?
Clowns and ATCers are still my favorite teams that remain.
I loved it that Kelly had complained about wanting to do the Roadblock... and then complained about doing it. <g>
Do we know all of the teams' "names" yet?

I missed that too. Normally I know how many teams are left, but couldn't remember for the life of me tonight. So when the ATC's/BFG's showed up I thought they were last. Then when they were all happy, I couldn't figure out who was left.

They got lost on the highway of all places. They were one of the two teams I was rooting for. Now I have to root for the clowns all the way/

The nicknames were hilarious. Did you catch "Chippendale's" for Reichen and Chip. Too funny.
Posted by: cello
I kind of wonder whether they were fed some of those nicknames, though. After a while, the constant nicknamingn seemed a bit contrived.
I did like the Chippendales name, though.

Not contrived, I think it is a natural artifact of them being lumped together at each pit stop for 12 hours and knowing that from season 1 having a team nickname helps. They probably have a big, drunken naming party the first couple of pit stops. Well, at least, I would :)
And we finally have an answer to why Chuck and Millie are virgins after 12 years of dating. Chunk is claustrophobic.
Posted by: mask2343
Yeah, he doesn't like to be in "tight" places.
Ok...that was bad.

I can't believe the kid wouldn't spring for the money to take a cab ride! When your in first place you do whatever it takes to stay in first place!
Is it possible to hate this year's Flo more than last years?

Depends. Who are you calling "this year's Flo" ? Do you mean Kelly? She's got a long way to go to match the 'real' Flo!
J
Posted by: pmyers
Is there any doublt. I can't remember her name atm, but it's the one always talking about being 50% of the team and she berates her partner for every decision and usually he is right. They were the only team to do that road block where they had to go to that house and he was the one that said there are probably more than one house and she hounded him the whole time......that chick.....this year's Flo ;)
Posted by: Turtleboy
But she did the rapelling. She's trying to do more. She's annoying and obnoxious, but in a way that is the exact opposite of Flo.
Posted by: pmyers
true...I'll give her that she is actually participating...helpful or not.
I did actually mention to my wife again last night that I wish they had to alternate group memebers on the road blocks.
Posted by: David Platt
I can't believe the ATC are still in this-- they've made some really stupid decisions in the first couple of shows, and they just remind me of the tortoise and the h..... well, another tortoise.

Yeah, this one was fun. I think this version of the Race is better than the last. A much more entertaining group of teams this time around anyway.
I didn't quite get the flare-up at the gate. After all, it looked as if Tian & Jaree and Reichen & Chip would have parked along the side of the road with the other teams except the guard at the gate told them to park there. Besides, it isn't like being first through the gate would help that much; there couldn't have been more that a minute or two between the first and last through the gate.
As for Kelly getting mad at Millie on the train when Millie wouldn't tell her which airport she and the others were going to; what part of the word "race" is she having trouble understanding? This isn't The Mole where you have to work together. Of course, she may think it is, given that she called Millie "The Mole" at one point.
Oh, and Kelly? Millie couldn't have been a cheerleader. She's a virgin, remember? :)
Posted by: WinBear
I thought "Millie the Mole" was due to the prominent mole on her upper lip, which the camera made a point of focussing on when Kelly named her that. I never considered thinking of her as a spy mole.

It didn't seem like that point was conveyed very well initially to the other teams. Had I been on one of those 2 teams, the first thing I would've said when the other teams started complaining was "we were hear first last night and weren't given the option of parking along side the road, or we would have". I probably still would've fallen to the back of the line though since, like you said, there didn't appear to major advantage in getting through the gate first. In fact, it looked like the Chippendales worked their way to the front on the highway drive.
Posted by: timf
As I see it, there are only a couple things that will bring ATC down. First, they'd have to make a big mistake on the final part of the leg. So far, they've always made their mistakes early enough to get caught up. Second, in the event no teams make a big mistake and they end up in some sort of physical race to the pit stop (not involving driving like this week), then they'd be at a disadvantage. But, I think they still have a couple weeks left in them.
Posted by: jradosh
It seems to me that (almost) all the previous seasons have involved a footrace at the end of the show (I guess the NYC finish in season one wasn't...) That'll be the downfall of the ATCs... something physical. You need both physical and mental to win.
Fortunately for last year's winners Zak had enough physical and mental to balance out Flo's lack of both.

I have to agree. I find myself rooting against teams like (I love this Turtleboy) heterophobes. I want to like Team NFL but they keep telling us who they are and making dumb moves. I think the teams that have been eliminated were some of my favorites.
Having said that, I think last night's show was pretty exciting. It ended before I wanted it to. We need to keep teams like Jon & Kelly, Tian & Jaree for the conflict factor . But it would be nice to see the other side, a team to pull for. ATCs are close to that. They were my choice to win from day one. That isn't looking so good right now. But who ever thought Flo & Zak would take it last year?

I'm a fan of the clowns. I love that they do clowny things during their down time on the race.
Posted by: Connie
The clowns also won my vote when they hung around when Millie was having her asthma attack in Venice in the previous episode.
The NFL Wives have steadily gone up in my estimation, they keep making the right moves, and supporting each other. Also, I notice that they may initially mispronounce a foreign place name, they learn it and attempt to get it right the next time.

Is anyone else worried about this shows ratings?
They are not even in the top 20, and there is nothing else on. Last seasons reruns are far outperforming this show.
This worries me because I really like this show and want there to be an Amazing Race 5, 6, etc. The show was already pulled out of the spring season, now that it is not even pulling in numbers over the summer, well, I will just keep my fingers crossed.
Posted by: jradosh
Hmmm... that would suck (if they cancelled it for low ratings). :(
Posted by: SirCodesALot
As an FYI: I read on Zap2It that Steve and Josh ran out of gas on the drive to Gorges du Bluvet and that's why they were so far behind. If that's true, I can't imagine why they didn't show it in the show.

Step off! Reichen and Chip have gotten a bad rap. They were desperately trying to do the right thing. They were following the cop's rules at the lighthouse and have had massively bad luck. OK they have made bad decisions, and they are paying for them, but they are not the monsters everyone wants to paint them as. They are not heterophobes and that is really childish namecalling! Millie and Kelly have been the awfull ones.
On a different note before I start using words ending in 'phobe':
Everyone's been griping about throwing away the strips, but they are really doing better this season - especially this episode. The only time I saw a strip hit the ground was Chuck (who never tried to save them). Many of the teams held the strip this time - Chip every time.
Posted by: pmyers
If I'm not mistaken, the security guards never talked to Chip and Reichen about parking there in the morning. They did tell them they couldn't sleep there. The girls were the ones that told them it was ok to be there.
They did totally handle that situation wrong though. They should have distanced themselves from the bimbos and just played on the fact that they were the first team there the night before and that the guards told them they had to leave. That probably would have been accepted more.

The hatred of the Chipsters isn't episode-specific, based on last night only, but based on their cumulative behavior since the show started, which has been less than exemplary.
Posted by: IJustLikeTivo
It was truely stupid to argue about this. If it were a situation where it made a difference, I could understand. e.g when they did the walk across the sydney harbor bridge last year or any other time were you had to go in order. In this case, all they did was do to the lighthouse and get the clue. It made almost no difference.
The ATC guys can't survive any more stupid mistakes. If it had not been for the utter stupidity of the last two teams, they would be gone.
The chiipandales do have issues. They aren't very nice and they don't even try to play fair. Frankly, I think both of them are a piece of work.
Sooner or late Millies asthma is going to get them.
I hate the NFL wives. "When we travel people take care of us, I am so proud that we managed to buy tickets." Hey, welcome to the world. No-one does it for us either. I wonder if they have maids, cooks, etc. A certainl irony if they do....
I like the son and dad. Too bad they messed up.
I hate Jon and Kelly. How disfunctional they are. Not a good way to start a possible marriage. No amount of counseling will help them.
The Models make me want to heave.
The only ones I really like are the clowns. They are having fun and are still competitive. They remind me of my past favorites, Team Cha Cha Cha. Except for the whole gay thing. LOL.
Weird people, but fun to watch.... I hope the ratings go up. I want more episodes.

...but how did they know they WERE the first ones there? Since the guard wasn't letting them stay there, any of these teams could have been there before them. Now, WE knew they were first, but Reichen & Chip based that assumption on the fact that there were no other cars around.

I don't think it is any different than any of the other nicknames used like BFGs. I think that was probably accepted or maybe even originated by those so named. They are the ones always calling themselves "whales".
I just think it is great play on words. I thought, when the term homophobic was coined way back when, that it was clever.
Posted by: esperantisto
#1 - The Chipsters are less than perfect. They are trying to be better.
#2 - They are exactly playing fair as they see it. Most of their problem stems from being overly-competitive (but then shouldn't you try to do everything you can within the rules to win?) because they are so worried about being last.
#3 - They are at least as nice as Millie and Kelley (though that isn't saying much)
#4 - They can say whatever they want on the show (a la BFG - which I also didn't like, but there isn't wasn't an AmazingRaceCentral post that I can reply to) - I was commenting about a board post.
#5 - It is exactly why you think it is clever that I am so disturbed by the term used. Many offensive terms are considered clever by those who use them.
AND
#6 - Will somebody please way in on the strips!?!?!?
Posted by: Skittles
Chips and Raisins said in the first episode that they were out to win the Race as revenge against all the heterosexuals that had looked down on them throughout their lives. That's at least somewhat heterophobic. It's certainly not "trying to be better".
As far as trying to run a clean race, that's definitely not the case. Their actions should be clear proof of that.

Does anybody else get the feeling that this TAR is lacking in creativity from the producers, like it's almost become a formula show?
I mean, we've seen the repelling before, we've seen the bungee jumps before, we've seen so much of this race already that there's not much that gets me on the edge of my seat.
I think it was TAR1 where they had to find the pendulum in Paris. There were two of them so if you picked the wrong one, you got way behind. Another time, (I think it was London) the Roadblock was that one team member had to go all around the city in a certain order and make about 10 stops to get the next clue that led them back to their partner. If that person guessed wrong, and got the next clue out of order and got to the end, you had to do it over again because order was important. In earlier races, you had to use your *mind.* In this race, it's mostly a physical race (attach race car tires and go for a ride). That doesn't require much intelligence.
In this race, there seems very little that can go wrong. Basically, it's go here, do this thing, go to the next route marker, do this thing, etc. Don't get me wrong, I *want* to like this show (I LOVE the Amazing Race concept and I've seen and loved all previous races), but this particular race lacks suspense.
I wonder if CBS cut their budget since they suspected ratings weren't going to be too good and this constrained the flexibility of the producers?
Posted by: Uther
I don't know how you all know so much about what each person has done so far. The sound on TAR is terrible. Really low and muddy. I have to turn on closed captioning, and that's not much help because the words come on screen about 15 seconds after the person speaks them! They must be doing the captioning live or else they just really suck at it.
The editors are also doing a crap job of letting you know where everybody is in relation to the other teams. (And it doesn't help that the closed captioning blocks all the text that they put up on the screen. But that's usually useless info anyway: dating 12 years, virgins.)
Posted by: esperantisto
The chipsters said they wanted to win to show everyone who didn't think they were good enough because they are gay - big difference!
...and can I say at this point that i'm sick of defending them (or feeling like I have to because noone else will)? They are not my favorite team (but then nobody is this season). I wish there was a much better gay team up there.
OTOH - I think a lot of people have it out for them 'cause they are gay and I have a crusade to fight that.
So... how 'bout them strips???

She's not nearly pleasing enough to look at to be this year's Flo. ;) Besides, she doesn't cry enough either -- she just happens to bitch a lot.
I have to say none of the teams really interest me that much.. although there's still room for some of them to beocme more interesting, like the clowns... the only ones I wanted to see more of was Amanda ("Amander" ;) ) and Chris.
I also miss the mental puzzles, things where a person could get something wrong (other than how to get somewhere on a map). It always bugs me that they call the route markers "clues." None of them these days are clues, they're just clear instructions on what to do next.
Posted by: mask2343
You have to give it to Kelly though. Unlike Flo, she does apologize to her fiance after she realizes she was wrong. I kind of like that team. You can tell they are best friends and a great couple because they CAN argue like that and still laugh about it afterwards. Pretty much like any good marriage.
Posted by: Ebenezer
Kelly shouldn't even have to put herself into positions where she needs to apologize in the first place. No partner (Kelly) should be that rude or mean.
My wife would never treat me like that.

Well, I don't see the problem with the term 'heterophobe'. It seems just as valid to me as 'homophobe'. It's not a stereotype.
I couldn't care less that Chip & Reichen are gay. I just don't like them. If you think people have it out for them because they're gay, that's your own bias.

I thought it was hilarious when Reichen and Chip parked in the wrong "parking lot" (looked like the shoulder, to me), and took off running down some random path into the forest. I was dying laughing as they hopped over streams and ventured further and further into the woods. Too funny! :D
They are the team this season I love to hate, like the twins from last season. I hope they stay around cause they definitely add drama to the show.
The models, one of whom looks like she couldn't possibly be a model, I also hate. They just seem like mean people. But they are so annoying that I just want to see them go.
I really don't know who I like. I guess the clowns, but they could get annoying with more camera time. The NFL wives were almost starting to grow on me for a minute there, but they're not on my good list yet. Hopefully as we get to know the teams better I'll find a favorite; it's just not as fun watching one of these contests without rooting for someone.

You forgot about them buying Business Class tickets and having to get off the plane! classic

I kind of feel sorry for Jaree. Tian is always yelling at her for one reason or another. For example, in last night's episode, when Jaree suggested that they go to the back of the line, Tian snapped, "Whose team are you on, anyway?!" as if Jaree wasn't allowed to have her own opinion.
And Tian is always yelling at Jaree to hurry up and run faster. Yes, I understand it's a race, but the chick obviously has a diminished lung capacity from 20 years of smoking -- cut her a little slack, would ya? Yelling and screaming is not going to make her run any faster.
And from next week's preview, it looks like Tian will be at Jaree's throat again, this time over a MAP that she believes will be too much baggage for them. Please.
I feel sorry for Jaree. I think she's trying, but nothing is good enough for her overly competitive partner.

Yet still managed to catch-up by the next task. As much as I dislike these guys, you really have to hand it to them for finishing where they did after 2 major foul-ups this round. If they can get their act together they're the team to beat.

Smiles: I didn't mention stereotypes, nor did I say that the term heterophobe didn't exist. They are by no means perfect, but they have not shown themselves to be heterophobes. That was only brought up because they are gay.

I don't see how anyone can defend the Chipndales. What about them calling the NFL wives, "the Supremes"? I laughed out loud. I love TAR but it has been difficult to choose a team to root for this season as so few of them have any redeeming qualities. What about the other "guy" team....they get very little camera time. I was sorry to see the father and son go (Weezer and Geezer according to the Chipndales). The clowns are ok. I like the ATCs but I'll be surprised if they last much longer. I guess I really don't care who wins just so it is not the obnoxious GAY team. They have behaved so rudely from day one (getting in people's face complaining, blocking people by holding on to the door handles, trying to elbow Millie away from the horse carriage, agreeing to grab a pass for another team then saying they missed it) but they will probably win....and everyone will swear they will never watch another TAR like last time when Flo and Zack won. Maybe that's why the ratings are so bad.
Posted by: spud
I couldn't believe Reichen's tantrum about "Don't question my integrity!" after they said "We don't know" when the other teams asked them if they were going to cut in line and they had just cut in line 2 episodes before this at the train station. He & Chip both seem to have problems controlling thier tempers.

Actually they were all set up for there to be a foot race in season one. However, only the winning team, Rob and Brennan caught the first subway. The second place team, Frank and Margarita felt that since they were from NYC they knew a "shortcut". It cost them as they missed the first train and were therefore a full ten minutes behind. Last season had only a very short foot race from the cabs to the finish line.

Go back about one generation and they would likely have been the cook or the maid. Just interesting to see how spoiled someone can become who say that they did not come from money. I think they made a point of that earlier.

Maybe you took it differently than I intended it to be. I meant to point out that I think they are spoiled. Neveau riche people can be that way.
They said earlier that they came from more humble beginnings and they wanted to prove that the stereotype of "Dumb NFL wives" was not true. I don't think they come across as particularly dumb but they do seem pretty spoiled and I think they have kind of forgotten where they came from. They act pretty high and mighty. I don't think the nickname they picked up, "The supremes", is entirely a reference to their gender and ethnicity.
If you saw something more in my comments than that, I apologise. I sure didn't intend for there to be any more in it than that.

Reichen's whining kept giving me flashbacks to Cartman on South Park: "Respect my Authority!" Despite that, I'm pulling for the Chippendales, the Supremes, and the Clowns as the final three.

That is too funny. :D I hadn't even thought of that.
I don't have a favorite team right now. I did like the South Dakota team (Chris and Amanda?), but since they were eliminated, I haven't picked a new favorite. The NFL wives are growing on me tho.

Yup, that's why they're my favorite. They stepped in when they felt the chippendale freaks were being unfair, but otherwise they run their own race.
They seem pretty smart, pretty low-key, and pretty athletic. They get along with one another (and most others), they are happy when they finish, and they seem to have the right attitude about the game. I think they'll win, and I want them to.

Wow am I the only one besides esperantisto and wants Chip/Reichen to win. I love the physically/verbally aggressive eye candy gay couple. If only they would stop making those mistakes. They definitely add drama to the game. More bang for my entertainment buck.

PMYERS!!
Thank you thank you thank you. Geez, I mentioned something I read on about Tian & Jaree and the first thing I read back is that I'm a lying scumball (a little license taken there, but that's how I felt) I frantically tried to find it again to vindicate myself to my Tivo peers, and could not find anything even remotely mentioning bisexuality. I began to wonder if it all came from some dark dream I had (whoa, don't want to go there). I just decided not to come back to this thread, it hurt too much.
THANK YOU!! I AM NOT A PERVERT, I AM A HUMAN BEING. WHOOHOO!

Sorry if my post hurt you. In defense of my post, you really gave a distinct impression when you said...
"I'm all for boards generating all heat and no light, and figured throwing this into the mix would give some posters more things to think about."
...which basically says that you posted it looking for reactions. That's a very close definition of trolling (although not necessarily in the negative sense).
Anyway, can we shake hands and make up?
Sorry. :(

No problem JJ. I remember that exact quote about her saying that "she knows better to hit on me" or something like that.
