Does hd cache size matter?

I'm about to buy a 120 GB 7200 RPM drive and was wondering if the cache size affected the Tivo at all. There is a large price difference between the 2MB and the 8MB cache versions so I would prefer to buy the 2MB version but I don't want to make my Tivo any slower.

Also I have a 60GB Series 2 machine purchased in December. Does anyone know the speed of the drives in these machines? I was trying to find out whether it would be better to make my 120GB the A drive and the 60GB the B drive or if it would be faster to just add the 120GB as a B.

A 7200 rpm dirve with 8mb cache is overkill for the Tivo. A 5400 rpm w/2mb cache is what I used for both my Tivos. :)

Does anyone know what might have speed my Directivo up? I have had it upgraded with a 60gb 5400 2mb Maxtor for about a year and it progressively got slower (menu's) and then recently added an 80gb Samsung I had laying around. I screwed up the upgrade so I started from scratch with a new image. Is it faster because I added the -127 command during the restore or is it faster because it's empty?

My subjective impression is that a TiVo upgraded with MFS Tools 2.0 is faster than a TiVo upgraded with TiVoMad or BlessTiVo. It's not the extra swap because TiVoes hardly use any swap in normal operation. I think it's the larger blocks that MFS Tools 2.0 creates (4Mb instead of 1Mb) I think this greatly reduces the amount of metadata involved in managing recordings.

Thanks, I will go ahead and buy the 2MB version since it is much cheaper. Would it make it any faster to make it the primary drive?
