upgrading ethically

Is upgrading Tivo in any way illegal or frowned upon by Tivo? I know they don't overtly support it, but it would be easy enough to overtly be against it. I'm considering buying either an old Tivo series one and upgrading it or buying a new Series2 and upgrading that. I am trying to figure out if this is ethical and/or endorsed or frowned upon by Tivo in any way. I have a series one which I was forced to upgrade because my hard drive died. I was told to either send it to get fixed or put in a new hard drive myself. I put in the new hard drive and absolutely can't imagine living without my 88 hr capacity (small compared to the capacities of others that I've read). I think in writing in this I have answered my own question, but any advice would still be greatly appreciated.

As you say, it would be very easy to make it difficult to change the hard drives in TiVoes, whereas infact MFS Tools, which was written for the original Series 1 TiVoes can be used on the current models - the specs haven't been changed to break it.

When TiVo do object to things, they do work to prevent them - see the on-going struggle to secure the Series 2 TiVoes against running user code.

But when it comes to drive upgrades, there's not even so much as a disapproving comment from TiVoPony.

TiVo are interested in your subscription fees, they don't care how big your hard drive is. Upgrade with a clear conscience.

Cross posting the same thing in multiple Forums is frowned upon. It's in Section B part 5 of the FAQ. I know one is a poll but still:
