How far do you have to boot into XP to get errors?

I stopped it at the point where the little green bars start moving back and forth in that status bar thing. But only for a second or two. Is that enough ?

What sort of errors would you like? :D

Dusting off my crystal ball, I'm guessing you're asking about Windows writing a "signature" on a TiVo disk that's connected to a PC booting into Windows NT/2000/XP. I don't know at what point in the boot sequence that happens, but I'd guess it would be fairly far along - perhaps even after you log in when it reports that it has discovered new hardware.

I think that is correct. I also have XP, and forgot to put the MFStools CD in while my new and old TiVo drives were attached. When I got to the XP starting screen realized the CD didn't boot, I just yanked the power cord...thought I was toast!

Rebooted with the CD in and no issues...whew!
