Greetings,

Does anyone have information on how to export Tivo recordings from a Tivo series 2 DVR to a PC instead of a VCR.

What I would like to do is export movies/shows from tivo to my pc and then edit the files to remove the commercials -- then record either onto DVD or VHS.

I do that with some shows & movies that i want to keep.
What I do is hook the S-video and/or RCA cables to my Canon ZR40 camcorder instead of my VCR. It's got an analog to firewire passthrough.
The firewire goes to my computer where I capture the movie/show, edit it down and burn it to DVD.
I'm using a Mac for this, so I ususally capture/edit in iMovie and then burn the DVD using iDVD, but other than the particular programs, the process should work on any firewire-enabled PC.

There are several video capture cards around that capture to an MPEG-II stream that can be recorded on to a DVD. Or you could get a DVD recorder. If you record on a rewritable DVD you can buy a matching DVD writer for your PC and use that to edit the streams before recording to write-once media.

Be aware that this is much harder with DVD-RAM than with either of the RW formats. With RAM you have to recompress the stream, which takes a long time (about 6:1 on my P3/666 and even the fastest machines can't do it in real time). With the RW formats the MPEG stream is already in the right format and can be edited without recompression
