Trading Spaces Carpenter

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Animgif

I watch TS all the time, and this is the first time I've seen the new carpenter...and he's HOT...who is he...is her permanent...who did he replace, etc? I had a look at their website and he's not listed. Maybe he's just for this show...but hrmmm...

Posted by: mrcoaster

I knew as I watched the episode that any thread on the show on any forum would immediately refer to the "hot" new carpenter.

My personal guess was that this new carpenter is going to be on the Trading Spaces: Family show spin-off that starts airing in July. This was his introduction. Just my guess though.

Posted by: Animgif

Cool...maybe I missed the intro... :)

Posted by: gleffler

That's correct, he'll be on the Family show. They're currently here taping it and I've met him and some of the families doing the Family show. He's a pretty cool guy, as is the new host of TS: Family.

The ad for next week's show said something about introducing the new carpenter, which seemed a bit odd to me since there was nothing about him.

His name is Carter & his bio is on the TLC web site

.. and oh yes, he's HOT.

Frank has been pretty hot the last two shows, with that sweaty shirt and all. I think he should carry a towel.

I'm not huge on spelling but reading this hurt my eyes.

Animgif I went "strait" to the TiVo after reading this thread. The new carpenter is hot. Maybe not as hot as Ty though. :D

The new carpenter is handsome, but Ty is most definitely the hottest one.

LOL, isn't he though! I'll definately be Tivo-ing Trading Spaces: Family to check out the carpentry work...I bet it will be superb...

LOL...yeah he should...But we love Frank, whimsy and all :) He's such a nice guy! I actually met him a few weeks ago when he was at the home and garden show here in Austin. Sweet, sweet, sweet! He loves what he does, and that's really all that matters in life!

lol I saw the signs for that. Did you ask him how his "wife" was doing? :p

Posted by: Animgif

hee hee...No, I didn't =) You should have gone, LOTS of nice home improvement stuff...I'm SOOOO ready to get done with law school so I can buy a house and decorate and remodel it! mmmmm, slate bathroom, wood floors, granite counters...good dreams tonight...Good dreams of Carter installing all of that for me! =)

Posted by: ClutchBrake

I love TS but sometimes the designers ruin it for me. Hildi and Doug have a real knack for doing that.

As for the new carpenter... y'all can have him. Just leave Amy Wynn for me! :D

Doug isn't TOO bad...but Hildi...She screws it up all the time...the bathroom...OMG...I would have DIED if I had come home to that!

Posted by: ClutchBrake

It's not Doug's rooms that bother me, it's his attitude. Quite often he is a grade A a-hole.

Posted by: Kablemodem

I hate Hildi's rooms, but I think she is very attractive. Maybe part of it is her attitude. It takes balls to paint your face on a stranger's wall.

Posted by: IJustLikeTivo

TS Designers:

Hildi. Love her attitude, don't always like her rooms.

Doug. Generally like his work but he is a jerk. They just replayed the episode where he wanted to paint the floor and when they would not let him he sulked for the rest of the show. A real piece of work.

Laurie. A bit saccharin for my taste but she does some great rooms.

Edward. Odd man but some great rooms. I loved the room he did as a Pullman Car.

Genevieve. I love this woman. Everything about her is fabulous. Not only am I in love with her looks and personality,I can't think of a room she did that I did not like.

Frank. A big warm pussy cat. I don't always like his rooms but he is such a nice man. He really cares about what he is doing.

Kia. This woman is a freak. I hate her and every room she ever did. The two rooms that spring to mind are the ones with the pyramind fountain that leaked and the one with the garden fence and astroturf. A piece of work. She does everything she can to shock you thinking that getting a violent reaction is the same thing as getting a good one. She needs to be shot.

Did I forget any?

IJLT

Posted by: pmyers

you forgot Vern. I don't think I've ever seen a room of his I didn't like. I'd love to work with Frank but I wouldn't want him to do one of my rooms. I'm so not country craft.

Posted by: IJustLikeTivo

Yep, how could I forget Vern Yip. He is my second fav right behind Genevieve.

Anyone care to dive in on the WYWO designers?

I would absolutely kill for a Vern room! =) He does such fabulous work...it's amazing. I can see why his regular clients pay in the 10's of thousands just for his services! There was a write-up in the NYT House and Home section about his about a year ago detailing his practice. He essentially has a HUGE waitlist and changes out the a$$ for his services and only does TS becuase he loves working with the people and to show that you CAN have style on a budget...and boy does he show that.

A lot of my decorating in my apartment is copies/knockoffs of stuff he does.

Other than him, I like Doug's stuff most of the time, and HATE every sing think that Kia has ever done or even THOUGHT about doing! Ugggghhhh, I still remember the flower bed (ummm, I mean grave yard) room she did on her first episode I think....shivvers...that gave me nightmares!

Posted by: Skittles

Must... refrain... from... woodworking... pun...

Posted by: curt222

Did you like Genevieve's "moss" room? Her stuff is really a mixed bag for me. I would rank them Vern, Doug, Edward, Genevieve/Laurie (tie), Frank (I hate country but some of his rooms are ok) , Hilde, Kia.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Vern: I'd give him a key to my house and say do whatever the heck you want. He hasn't done my favorite rooms but he has never done one I didn't like.

Doug: Almost as trustworthy as Vern in terms of design and style. He has done several of my favorite rooms. The difference is that I wouldn't want to be around Doug when he was working.

Frank: I'd let him do a sun room. A room where everyone gathers to visit. He would give it color and a light-hearted feel.

Genevieve: Tough call. Probably a kitchen or bedroom.

Laurie: Dining room. Any room that needed to feel formal.

Hildi: Really tough call. I'd probably only let her in my house if I already had a design for the room. I certainly wouldn't leave her alone.

Edward: Never seen one of his rooms.

Kia: Only saw the very end of one episode featuring her room. It was hideous.

Lots of references to Doug and the Pullman Car. I still think it was Edward but absent a defintive episode guide, we will never know. I tried to find the room on the before and after section of the TS web site but there are tons of rooms with dead links and I could not find it. Either way, I thought it showed a lot of imagination.

In any event, I like most of what both of them do, but Doug's attitude gert to me after a while. I imagine the whole thing is probably done for drama because if he really acted like that much of an A**Hole, he would have no clients at all.

Posted by: TiVoLance

Hmm I must admit Amy Winn is super hot. And she is a MUCH better carpender than Ty. Weirdly enough the Omaha Weekly Reader sums the dueling hotness of the carpenders up for me.

quote:

The Swing of the Axe
As much as I lust after Ty, and though I think he should only be allowed to work in warm climates (in a celebrity episode with one of the Dixie Chicks, we caught a brief glimpse of Ty without his shirt, his trousers slung low on his naked hips), I’m actually more in love with the other carpenter, Amy Wynn. She’s a gal who knows her way around a jigsaw, which makes her terrifically sexy to a gay man. I’d be willing to change sexual orientation if it meant a wife who could slap together a French country-style armoire and matching nightstands with only $27 worth of materials.

PS That Episode was filmed in my town. Where was I???

Yeah...I saw this one...mmmmm... =)

That was a great article.

It?s almost like watching a tasteful, sexless documentary on wife swapping. As with that new suburban pastime, the couples frequently look somewhat desperate, are often overweight, and appear vaguely nauseated by the final results.

As for Ty, it's the classic case of women (and others ;)) wanting him and men wanting to be him. He's just very cool. Amy, Amy, Amy. What can you say, there's just something about a woman who can handle a (power) tool. :D

Posted by: gschrock

quote:

Hmm, did you see the room where she turned the wall into a rusty mess? Ok yeah, some of the rooms she does are ok, but there's some real lousy ones too.

Vern, however, almost always strikes gold. He's about the only one of the designers I'd be willing to let within a hundred yards of my home.

Posted by: BeanMeScot

Vern is the only one I would give my keys to. I like Laurie, Edward and Frank most of the time. Everyone here seems to like Doug. The Pullman car and the home theater were kind of cool but would you really want them in your house? He is certainly a jerk to work with as a home owner on the show. He does not have to listen to what these people say. I wonder how he acts with home owners who pay him?

Posted by: Frylock

Doug has said repeatedly in interviews he acts as the "bad guy" on the show to spice it up a little. It's just the way he is. I am sure he's not an ass when being paid!

Amy Wynn is yummy hands down. But I don't know any man who wants to be Ty! Who wants to be a lousy carpenter? I can build (and have!) built better projects than him!

Posted by: cello

Ooh, Amy Wynn is almost enough to turn me into a lesbian. Or at least bi... :)

I'd let Laurie or Vern do a room in my place in a blink. Vern is the only one I'd give permission to do my entire house... if Laurie did my whole place, every room would look the same. But I love what she does. I wouldn't mind a nice living room out of her.

Truthfully, I'd rank Frank up there with them. If you notice, not every room he does is country. He and Vern are the designers who are most likely to listen to a homeowner's wants and needs, and to actually do something that suits the homeowners. I've seen Frank do great un-Frank-like rooms. I'd trust him a lot. I do think that he shines when doing more kitchy stuff though. If I had kids, I'd pick him to do their playroom in a second. Same for a sun porch, and possibly a kitchen.

The other designers can stay far away from me. Doug has actually done some pretty neat rooms, but he has done enough disasters and enough ignoring of the styles and needs of the homeowners that I wouldn't trust him. I'm not much of a fan of Edward's stuff, though I recognize that it's often pretty good. He's just never done something that I'd personally want in my house, and I don't trust that he ever would. If Hildi or Kia came anywhere near my place, I'd be tempted to get a restraining order. Hildi just seems like a person I'd never like to meet - she's so self centered and comes off as very mean. Attitude is okay, but she takes it several steps too far. And I've hated almost everything she's ever laid her hands on. Kia seems like she might be a nice person outside of the context of designing things, but she doesn't seem to care much about whether anybody but herself will like the rooms, and her designs suck ass. Or look like ass. Or something.

Other than the bathroom...(lord have mercy on Hildi's soul if I EVER came home to that after working for 2 daays)...Kia is 1,000,000 times worse than Hildi...

Posted by: esperantisto

Does this mean that i'm only officially gay in combination with ClutchBrake?

Posted by: TiVoLance

I saw Carter tonight on ET. He said he was single. :D

Posted by: pkscout

I thought Carter did a fine job. My wife and I did not discuss the whole hot thing, but I guess Carter is more "ruggedly hansom" than Ty, who has that goofy charm going for him. But for me, Amy Wynn is definitely my favorite. :D

The thing I noticed was a lack of chemistry between Carter and the other folks. I'm sure that comes from being the new guy, and if he's going to the new show, that will work itself out over time.

As for the designers, Hildi graduated from the University of North Carolina. For me as a Duke grad, that basically explains her for me. :p Kia is a whole 'nother story though.

Dez was worse than any of them. Ever see any of those "lamps" she made?

Posted by: cello

Oh darn, I know a couple of cool people at UNC. Then again, I know another cool person who is going to be a postdoc at Duke.

Guess I'll have to search for other explanations for her ickyness. ;)

She was definitely bad (see earlier post when I referred to her as Dez the Evil Lamp Lady :)) but of the ones that are still on the show, Kia is the worst. Dez did make some nice pillows in the purple harlequin painted room...the one with the plaster cast hands on the mantle. The rest of the room was fairly hideous (although the purple color was nice, it just looked like crap the way she painted diamonds and stripes everywhere), but she made a lot of funky pillows that were kinda cool.

I read an interview with Ty the other day on MSN.

Basically, he said that he breaks things on purpose because it is a reality show. It was interesting to see him 'dish' on his co-stars.

It was Doug. My wife met the wife. She works at the local JoAnn Fabrics. They liked it I think, but he put drywall over the light switch. I also know guys that worked on that ep. They thought it looked great on camera but really crappy in real life.

The Pullman car episode was on my Tivo yesterday...ugly! =)

Posted by: cello

yeah, I'd never want to live in it, but I admit it's one of the cooler transformations I've seen.

I love that episode because of Vern's room :)

Posted by: Kablemodem

There were a few shows on yesterday and I can't remember which was which, but Hildi actually did a nice room - the one with the red wall fabric and the Amy Wynn armoire. Doug did one of the worst rooms I have seen - the gray one with the cool but weird drop ceiling. Of course, there was another Carter episode and he made some stuff.

I have to agree 100%. That doug episode this weekend was a nightmare. I just watched it, and my wife and I both could NOT belive that black room. Ok, so NOT exactly black, but darn close. They moved the computer desk in the closet. it was just insane. Doug is now on my list of never letting anywhere near my house.

Posted by: Animgif

Yeah...the purples in that dark room were nice, but the dark, ughhhhhhh....Not what the home owner wanted at ALL!

Posted by: Sirwill

My wife says she actually rates it as her least favorite room period. As in as much as she hated that hildi bathroom (you know the one) this she hated even more.

I don't think anything could EVER rate below that bathroom...ever, ever, ever...A close second to that would be the graveyard that Kia did...and third would be the straw (not the moss) that someone ( I think geneviv) glued to the wall....

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Straw was Hildi, moss was Gen.

I'm not sure I've seen the bathroom everyone keeps making fun of. I just recreated my TS season pass. I watched it so much last year I burned myself out. I'm ready to go again now. :)

Over the weekend I saw my first full episode with Edward. The first thing I noticed was that nasty oily hair! Ewwwww. He reminded me of the Soul-Glo family from Coming to America. Remember, the ones who left stains on the walls and furniture?

Nasty hair aside the room he did was phenomenal. It wasn't really my style but the room was magnificent. He really accomplished what he set out to do and did it in fine style and under budget. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his rooms.

While I didn't really like the bathroom (ummm...hello Hildi, those are going to get dusty after a while, who is going to want to dust those), I don't really know what kind of change she could make to it to start with. It's a bathroom, you go in and do your business, maybe read a magazine or take a bath, and then you get out. To top it off, it was already a gorgeous bathroom. I think the homeowners were just stupid to pick that room to begin with.

Posted by: thehepcat

I never caught the bathroom episode, but I can't really imagine anything worse than that damn moss room. I would have kicked her ass if that was that woman.

Posted by: cello

Imagine: 6000 fake gaudy plastic flowers on your wall, attached by 2 staples each = 24,000 little holes in the drywall in your bathroom.

Forget about whether or not it was ugly, that's just a stupid idea. Good thing these people are probably okay on money (with a bathroom that size....) and will be able to afford to completely redo the drywall in their bathroom as soon as it starts to disintegrate from the moisture seeping in to all of those holes... Or perhaps the flowers will cause a health hazard first because of all the mold that will inevitably grow on them.
