Ren & Stimpy on Spike TV (so sue me)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, it's Ren and Stimpy, so you don't expect anything to make much sense or have much continuity. But it should at least be funny. This was one of the worst things I've ever seen on tv. Very disappointed.

I give every show my 3 episode drop dead rule. Before I remove it from my RPTV theme set-up. It better get funny real fast or else

I'm mixed. On the nostagia hand I'm happy to see it back and just exactly like the original (well, OK...way more extreme).

But on the other hand, I was sorta sad to see that now that they are purposely reaching adults the humor hadn't evolved any.

And where the hell was Powered Toast Man?! ;)

I thought the funniest thing about it was that the
'first channel for men" was featuring a cartoon about a gay dog and cat having sex. ;)

It had a few, a very, very few funny moments. Mostly it was just one gross image after another. Not that there's anything wrong with that - but you have to actually have the humor in there as well or it's just pointless.

I'm torn. We REALLY didn't need the last scene. It was just unnecessary, over the line. But then again, it was one of the funniest snippets....

I didn't like it much either. I'll give it a couple of weeks to see if it gets better. I did like the 'classic' show after Stripperella.

OK, I considered myself a pretty big R&S fan back when it first started. After they canned John K. and all that mess, it definitely went downhill. So I was delighted to hear that John K. would be back ...

But this episode was absolutely the worst one I think I've ever seen. Not funny, not funny, not funny. All I could think was that they put the episode together just to see if someone would air it.

I'm looking forward to next week's episode, "Man's Best Friend". I think that's the 'lost episode' that people were always talking about. But if the rest of the episodes are like the first one, that SP is not long for my TiVo. And that's a shame. :(

Agreed, Smiles. Not funny at all.
And while I welcomed back John K., I was extremely disappointed that Billy West was not the voice of Stimpy.......

Way over the top. I like ass jokes as much of the next guy, but this was just disturbing. Didn't the show used to have some sort of plot?

Seems odd - a show filled with gross and freaky gay humor on a network for supposedly macho NASCAR loving men? Where is the audience? Would a gay man even know about R&S, and if so, would he be amused by it any more than the people posting in this thread?

I'll give it a few more episodes, but I think I'd rather watch Space Madness for the millionth time than see "new" episodes like that...

I didn't even know John K. was back. That's too bad the show sucked, I thought it was great back in the early days. Of course, back then, the show was pretty unique. Nowadays, it's not nearly as unique.

Posted by: Fustanella

I stopped watching and dropped its SP about halfway through. I'm saddened by the demise of what was a very enjoyable show in the past.

It WAS great back in the early days. And ONLY back in the early days (first dozen or so episodes produced). Pretty unwatchable from the time they threw John K. over the side.

I too got the feeling that John K. sat down and said, "OK, let's see how far we can go to make sure this whole Spike TV thing is what they say it is." It wasn't funny, and what made the original great was it was funny AND had gross-out stuff. This was just entirely gross-out.

I did a "save until I delete" on it though. I'm going to try a few more and see how it goes.

And don't forget, they showed Space Madness. That has to count for SOMETHING.

Yep, I know about R&S and loved the show in the past. As others have said, mixed emotions about the first episode.... before it seemed to always elude to the fact that R&S were "gay" (or that was my take on it....) this left NOTHING to the imagination!! LOL

I will give it another week or two and see...

My eyes are still burning.... did I really see Ren sodomize Stimpy?? Or was that just a bad dream.

LOL, now I want to record this just to see how unfunny it is.

No you don't.

Seriously :(

Make better use of your drive space and record the classic R&S this Thursday. They are showing "Stimpy's Invention".

Happy Happy Joy Joy :D

Remember the 3 episode drop dead rule. Even the best of shows could suck, first week out of the block. Some of you guys pull the plug rather fast :)

Posted by: TiVolcano

Wow, it couldn't have sucked more. I will give it one or two episodes before pulling the plug, but it better improve quickly.

I loved the original ones, but this was just unwatchable. My fiance bailed after ten minutes because she had to vomit. I stayed with it until the end, but now I'm thinking of joining Spike Lee's lawsuit.

Edit: silly grammar

Posted by: Fustanella

This was a special circumstance. I'll let others evaluate the next couple of episodes, thanks.

I agree, as a LONG time fan, this ep was awful...think I laughed out loud twice.

I began to wonder if the cartoon had changed or just me, or if perhaps the cartoon's humor had been surpassed by other "adult" cartoons like South Park, Simpsons and Family Guy.

But then I thought, no, Ren & Stimpy used to be more inventive that just one bodily function joke after another(not that those weren't always present). I think of things like the Happy Helmet and the Nature Show episode.

And I'd second another poster's thoughts...where's powdered toast man? Mr. Horse? Muddy Mudskipper? Where's the best toy ever, LOG?

I got my hopes up with "Ask Dr. Stupid", but even that wasn't funny. Dr. Stupid is not supposed to get the answer right!

Disillusioned as I am, I'll check out a few more before giving up. Happy to see the classics being aired though.

Dave
