newbie trying to upgrade hard drive

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I downloaded Hinsdale's How To guide, and it didn't work. I was trying to upgrade a series 1 TIVO to a new Maxtor 160GB hard drive. I followed the instructions and ran MfsTools, but couldn't get the command to execute successfully. I was trying to bypass the backup image because I only have a WinXP computer (which I may now regret since my TIVO is locked up on the powering up screen). I wanted to preserve my recordings and transfer to the new drive.

Any ideas on what I could possible do and what I did wrong?

Help much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Firstly fix your current TiVo drive.

Then put a small FAT partition on your new drive and backup to that.

When you've put that backup file somewhere safe, come back and we'll figure out what you're doing wrong.

okay we're taking really, really a newbie! I downloaded the mytivobackup file, but it is simply that a file, not an executable or anything. Do I run this as a bootable? In WinXP?

I've never had to use it. It looks like it's a Unix executable, so you'd boot a TiVo boot disk then mount your C: drive as in Hinsdale and run it from there.

Perhaps you'd better post in that MTB thread and ask people who have run it what to do :)

Robert , i think he hosed his Tivo for now.
I suggest downloading an Image, restore and start from scratch.
faceoff, if you need an Image, let us know what model you have and we direct you where to get it.

I have a Sony SVR-2000 with the Quantum Fireball 30GB hard drive as the original and moving to a Maxtor Ultra 160GB hard drive.

What do I need to do to restore an image and (sigh) start from scratch?

I too am a newbie going through some problems upgrading the HD.
My dsr6000 modem blew so I bought a dsr7000 - I would like to put the old 40 gig quantum into the new machine.
I followed the Hinsdale guide to backup the new drive first and formatted a 3gig HD as FAT32 and connected it as Primary Master.
At the #mount /dev/hda /mnt/dos, I get #mount: you must specify the filesystem type.

The backup fails.
Any ideas?

Thanks

You're using an old copy of Hinsdale. Get the current one from the post at the top.

Thanks for that Robert!

I have a Philips dsr6000 model. I need a boot image for it. Please PM me with it.
