Forgot to Copy rc.sysint to /dev/hda4 - Tivo Stuck! HELP!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: tasi
I was moving tnlited and tivoftpd to the rc.sysint.author file (taking it out of the rc.sysinit file), and I forgot to copy the changed file to /dev/hda4.
I made the changes to /dev/hda7, and just completely forgot to copy the changed files to hda4.
So now my Tivo is stuck at "Your Recorder is starting up, please wait a moment" screen. I'm begining to panic, please help!
What can I do to fix this? Should I connect the drives to my PC and use the MFSTools CD to access the partitions and fix the problem?
I have the original drive as the master, and an 80 gig as the slave. Do I have to hook up both drives? so I don't mess anything up?
Please help, I'm desperate!
Thanks,
Tariq Ali.

Which partition is your active root? It sounds to me like you've corrupted the copy on hda7. How did you edit it?

Ok, so I was able to use MFSTools to boot and mount my A drive.
I mounted both hda4 and hda7.
I was able to access all the files in rc.d.
I noticed cyan colored M's in both the rc.sysint and rc.sysint.author files.
I used joe to remove them and placed the drive back in Tivo.
I got a little further, now my Tivo gets stuck at "A few more moments".
I've tried to take out all the extra lines at the end of rc.sysint and placed a blank rc.sysint.author, to try and get down to a "basic" setup, with no luck.
SO, now I'm thinking I have a corrupt rc.sysint?
My setup is as follows:
Original A drive
Seagate Barricuda B drive (80Gigs)
Tivo AirNet WiFi card
Can someone PLEASE send me a clean rc.sysint file? I would be soooo greatful.
I hope this is what solves my problem.
Another question, does anyone know if rc.sysint is finished loading when it get's to the "A few more moments" screen? or is it still processing that file?
I'm assuming that it is still processing rc.sysinit.
Thanks for any help guys, I really appreciate it!

Sorry Robert, forgot to answer your question...
I edited both hda4 and hda7 partitions to match each other.
when I screwed up I was using slackware to ftp the files and used vi to edit them. I did ftp them back and forth to the Tivo using an ASCII transfer.
I'm not sure how the ^M's got in the file.
Thanks for the reply Robert!

Which partition is your active root? (Perhaps if I give that question a line on its own it'll get an answer...)
'Almost there' is printed when rc.sysinit starts to run and is replaced by the TiVo interface when MyWorld starts. So rc.sysinit is starting, but MyWorld isn't.
Slackware Linux and TiVo Linux both use the same line terminations (LF's), so FTP'ing in ASCII mode shouldn't change the file. vi shouldn't have introduced the CR's either. The fact that you get 'almost there' printed suggests that you have successfully fixed that problem.
Getting a clean copy of rc.sysint is probably the best way forward. If you figure out which partition is the active one, you can completely ignore the other one.

Thanks for the quick reply Robert.
I believe that hda7 is the active root. I remember having to mount hda4 when I was originally making changes.
Do you have any idea where I could get a fresh copy of rc.sysint?
Thanks,
Tariq.

Oh Joy!
Tivo is working perfectly now!
Luckily I had the rc.sysint file on my slackware pc, and just copied it over to the Tivo and everything is working fine now.
So it was definately a corrupt rc.sysint.
As always, I've learned the hard way BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!!
so now I have backups of everthing! :D
Thanks Robert, you were a great help, I really appreciate your participation in helping me solve my problem. While searching the forum for similar problems I noticed that you try to help a lot of people, I think that's very noble of you, and I wish you the best!

I just like talking about computers :) Anyway, it's much more interesting to work through something like this than just telling another newbie to read Hinsdale!
