Are they? It says call to order, but up in the corner it says "Sorry this item is currently out of stock" Is that simply a trick to make their online store not allow you to order online or are they really out of stock?

Was available for $249, but not now.. "Sorry, we're currently out of stock. "

But what does this mean?

Up to 80-hour digital-recording capacity. You'll never again miss your favorite shows! Also enabled for TiVo Home Media Option - enjoy digital music & photos, remote scheduling and more. Works with any TV system: antenna, cable, digital cable, satellite and combinations.

You don't have to pay $100 extra for HMO when you buy these?

"enabled for" is generally marketing speak for "it has the potential to do that." AFAIK you still have to pay $99 for HMO.

Weird...

As an update, they are in stock...I just ordered one! I guess you just have to call to check, the website must not be updated with that information. The operator on the phone said they sell out quickly and were sold out for about 2 weeks.

I thought that enabled generally meant it was turned on and ready meant it has the potiential.

From the dictionary:
en·a·ble
To make operational; activate

read·y
Prepared or available for service, action, or progress

Yep, just ordered one as well. I asked the CSR what the "enabled" meant, and she said that "it has usb ports so you can purchase the HMO if desired". It does not have HMO already enabled.

In most computer marketing jargon, enabled and ready both mean it has the potential, and activated means it's turned on.

They are Series2 models, therefore HMO enabled, as opposed to Series1 models.

FYI, my first refurb was defective -- kept saying it was too hot (at 36C) and turning off. It drove me nuts!

Second one was fine, but that makes my record 50% with refurbs. I assume Tivo's generall refurb record is better...

;-)

But at that price I can deal with returning one if needed. I don't mind refurbished. All it means is they reformatted or replaced the HD and sent it out, or perhaps it was never activated in the first place. I don't mind getting refurbished computer hardware because with the exception of hard drives it doesn't really wear, its usually in like-new condition all the time.

...except that heat-related issues can make components fail. Refurbs have been exposed to heat more than new ones.

I took the chance and saved a hundred bucks -- paid for a good portion of my 120G upgrade. I'm happy now -- but wasn't when I had to deal with a defective unit and sending it back. If I had to do it again I'd stick with new...

I bought one of the refurb's a few weeks ago and have had zero problems with it. I've almost got my first convert too, much to his wife's chagrin.

I bought one of these 80hr refurbished units over one month ago for my Dad and the unit works great.
