Help! it crashed! Cannot boot Kernel...

So my wife and I live by TIVO....No More Live TV. ......
yesterday, screen went black and TIVO says "cannot boot kernel"
Customer service thought it might have overheated, suggested I buy a new machine. I don't like that answer and had previously wanted to add a new drive (but didn't want to void the warranty), so now that it appears to be dead, it is as good a time as any. (Direct TV Sony T60)
Thought I'd try the replace myself method, it it doesn't work, I can return the hard drive and go to weaknees for a fully configured version.
Under the replacement method, Hinsdale's docs repeatedly say don't fry the hard drive because then your TIVO is dead. I want to buy a new drive and get it up and running, but is there a complete version of the OS within the tool set? if I have no A drive, can I do this?
Lastly, having trouble creating the boot disk using Nero, looks like the boot file is in the isolinux directory instead of the root directory, simple fix, I'm sure, but I've always been a mac user so this is new to me....

The utility disks don't contain the TiVo software. The backup files are quite large and they're specific to each model of TiVo. (They're also copyright TiVo Inc, of course). You have to acquire that separately.
You have to use the noJ version of the MFS Tools 2.0 ISO linked in New Hinsdale. The original one is, er, not good.
If you can't make the CD work, just use the floppy instead. The only extra you need is qunlock to unlock the original A drive, but if your A drive is toast, then that's probably not an issue.
