Preparing a new drive for upgrade
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm in the UK and have a Thompson unit with 40gb drive. This isn't enough. I've decided to upgrade by replacing my 40gb drive with a Samsung 120gb - this seems the safest upgrade path. I have read Hinsdale and, being a computer techie, it looks reasonably straightforward. However, a question crossed my mind.
I need to prep the drive with the utilities and back up the existing TiVo drive to it etc etc. However, I am running a Gigabyte GA-6BXE motherboard (PIII) which I don't think supports 120gb drives - I'm told the maximum size is 80gb.
Does this matter, if I turn off auto-ide-detection?
Thanks, the help standard here is truly wonderful...

Ok, I think I've answered my own question - just found a thread which says that Linux doesn't user the BIOS so motherboard limitations don't apply.

Please shout if I've read that wrong as I am about to order the drive!
Thanks

Unfortunately it's impossible to be sure without trying it. I'd be surprised if there's a problem.
You're right that the important thing is that Linux detects the drive correctly, so turning off the BIOS may work (on my mobo it makes the drives detect as 32Gb, so you never know).
You can also look into reflashing the BIOS if it doesn't see the drive properly.

Thanks - if it appears to detect at the wrong size, do you think I would have a problem, or should I plough (plow for USA friends) on anyway?

If Linux detects a 32Gb drive, then that's what MFS Tools will work with. So, no, if your drives aren't detected as the correct sizes, stop and work out how to get them detected correctly.
