Which unit to go with?

Well, I've finally decided to take the Tivo plunge. However, I remain undecided about which unit to go with... the 40 hr unit for $200 or the refurbed 80 hr for $250 (both from the website of course). It seems that the 80 hr has a great price, but I am unsure of buying this refurbed. Also, I am wondering what quality most users find acceptable (I will be using S-Video from cable box to tivo and again from tivo to tv).

Depends on whether you will be upgrading with a larger or additional drive. If not, the 80 hour unit is probably worth the extra $50. Otherwise go for the cheapest one, they are identical except for drive size. Don't worry about being refurbed in this case - they both have the same warranty (I think) and drives are usually the major point of failure. You'll soon find out if you spend time on this forum that replacing a drive after warranty in TiVo is no big deal.

If you want to make your TiVo last longer, put it on a UPS that also has protection for the phone line. A 350W unit is plenty and are available for $40-50 or less on sale.

Medium quality on SA TiVos is fine for most programming - some fast action sports look better on best however.

Welcome in advance to the TiVolution! :)

Edit: Sorry to say, but after viewing this thread and visiting TiVo's web site, the refurbed units may not be available currently. The fact that they haven't removed the page completely makes me think that they will be available again eventually.

Unless you plan on upgrading, the larger unit would be your best bet.

That being said, it allows you some room to leave something on the tivo to watch which is very nice like during this summer I don't have to rent any movies and have plenty to watch.

I have a brother who has a 32 hr unit and I don't see how he gets by. He must not record shows or has to delete them as there is no other choice with smaller drives.
