Darn skippy I'm taking it... what could it hurt? There is no moss on it or anything and it's still in solid form!

Honestly, the way my back feels I could care less if it expired a year ago! (meaning 04/02)

Have you ever taken expired medicine?

mmm vicodin.

If you don't take it, give it to me.

April was a year ago? Where was I?

It shouldn't hurt you. Drug companies have to put an experation date on it for as long as they've tested it to be good for. If they only tested it to be good for a couple months, and didn't test any longer than that, then they can't very well say it's good for months. Probably the worst that will happen is it won't be as potent.

I subtract days from food, add months to painkillers

I would have no hesitancy in taking the drug. In most cases, the only risk is that it might have lost some potency. I keep some seldom-used drugs in the refrigerator where they will probably last for years. (Disclaimer: I vaguely remember reading that a few drugs actually increase their potency with age, possibly to dangerous levels - unfortunately, I can't remember their names, but wanted to mention the possibility.)

Opiates are evil, pure and simple. Take a couple of Tylenol, Aleve or Motrin instead.

Vicodin with that date would be fine.

I always thought drugs lose their potency with age.

I had a shattered wisdom tooth recently and was in ungodly pain. It was a sunday night, no dentists to be found.

Wound up digging up some Darvocet 500mg tablets that were over 3 years old. Took two of them, nothing. A few hours later, took 3 more, still nothing.

5 of them in 3 hours should have me passed out on the floor.

Went to dentist the next day, got a persciption for Vicodin. Took two and was feeling no pain and asleep in less then an hour.

So, taking expired pain killers won't cause you to run naked into traffic while speaking in tongue or kill you, but they might not help either.

Most medications just lose their potency after the expiration date. But some may be harmful after that date.

Aspirin and the tetracycline antibiotics can break down into products that can be damaging to kidneys.

Also, do you know if you did or didn't damage your back? Believe me, being one that has had back surgery and one who is disabled because of it, when it comes to your back, don't mess with it. It can have very serious results.

My original back pain was just that, pain. It didn't stop me from walking or moving or anything else, just hurt. 7 days later, I couldn't sit for 2 seconds without having both major pain and muscle spasms in my legs. It ended up being a ruptured disc, that put fragments into my nerve route causing permanent damage to the nerves. I'll say it again, if your back really hurts, to the point where you have to take narcotics to relieve that pain, go to a doctor. Otherwise, you might be taking those narcotics for the rest of your life...
