2003 World Series of Poker

For poker fans, set your TiVos. Coverage of 2003 WSOP $10K No Limit Hold Em starts tonight on ESPN at 9PM ET. It will run seven episodes, same time every week, covering pre-final table action up to final table.
This is the most extended coverage that ESPN has ever had of a poker event and they should be raising the bar after World Poker Tour's great success on Travel Channel. ESPN has been rerunning past poker tourney coverage leading up to this week's '03 coverage, so tons of poker action on TV.
Also, WPT began rerunning last season's shows last week, so if you're a poker player and missed any of those, set your TiVos for that, too.

I'll watch it, but I have a hard time getting into anythign without the WPT announcers :)

I can't wait eMarkM! BTW, I been meaning to thank you for posting the 2+2 link here a while back. Been having a ball reading all of ya'lls insights into the game, etc.
I take it you have seen that we are on some what of our own little poker kick here on TiVo Community? We have a regularly scheduled Wednesday "Hump Day" game, and we'd love to have you show up some night and teach us a lesson for playing 62o ;)

From what I understand they will feature a different table from each day of the 5 day event, with the last couple of shows reserved for final table action. There will be hole card cams on all players on these featured tables, just like WPT, so we'll see all cards of all players involved. This should be a big step up from past year's ESPN coverage (which they've been rerunning) where you only knew their cards if someone was all-in and they flipped them up.

There is no way to season pass this is there? My Dtivo only shows it as the same show over and over....

That's correct -- the guide data seems to indicate that it's one episode aired many, many times. I started with a Wishlist, but ended up going with a Weekly Manual Recording. T-26 min.!

Just finished watching the first episode (no spoilers) -- I'm liking what I see so far. Good clean graphics. I like the insta-stats, since my Hold 'Em math isn't very good yet. However, I've kind of become conditioned from WPT to the running tally of pots and stacks. I'm preferring this approach of only showing the hole cards of players who stay in -- I know it still happens at the same speed, but it feels faster this way. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I liked it. Loved the stats. Not as dramatically presented as WPT. But, it should improve in later rounds when the limited number of cameras capture more of the action.

Haven't caught it on my TiVo yet as it conflicted with BB4 last night so I appreciate the lack of spoilers here.
Just wanted ya'll to know I sent off a PM to TiVo to see if they could do anything about the guide data and allowing us to set up a regular Season Pass for it. I'll let you know if I hear anything back!

There's a good article in the NY Times (free reg. required) about poker and the increasing importance of on-line play and computer-based training.
However, if you're watching the series on ESPN and don't yet know the name of the 2003 Series winner, then be forewarned: the winner's name appears in the first sentence of the article! (And numerous times afterward.)

Just heard back from TiVo ya'll and the Season Pass option should be available in the next day or two. Check it Saturday or Sunday, after a data download or two. I don't know if the data will be any better, because that's an ESPN thing as far as I know, but at least it will be recognized as a series!
Thanks TiVo!

The 9PM eastern time episodes every Tuesday for the next six weeks are the FRO's?

Why not? I just created a SP for it on ESPN. I just chose to record all episodes (including duplicates). Since it's a SP instead of a wishlist, it's ignoring everything on ESPN2 and only getting the shows on ESPN. Unfortunately, there's no easy way for me to determine whether or not I'm actually recording a duplicate, because (as you say) all the show guide data seems identical. If I could tell, I could simply go into "view upcoming shows" and cancel the recordings for the shows that I thought were duplicates. Of course, if I could tell, so could my DTiVo and there'd be no reason to do that.
Anyway, maybe I'm missing something about why you can't set up a SP for this....?

Until the last couple of days, the guide data wasn't configured correctly to indicate that the show was a series. TiVo treated it as the same episode airing over and over and over. As a result, the SP option wasn't presented, and you had to either set up a Weekly Manual Recording or an auto-record WL.
But it's good to know that it's working correctly now.

If the guide data is working now, then yes, that is correct -- Tuesday, 9 PM EDT on ESPN.

I am addicted to this show now.

I want to win a big lottery so I can become a professional poker player... what a great job! (And with my plan I don't have to be very good at it...)
Posted by: lpwcomp
It really surprises me that the players are willing to have their hands revealed, even when they weren't revealed at the table (they folded or weren't called)
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I note that Amarillo Slim and the defending champ both went out in the first round - from the same table.

Has anyone been able to set up a Season Pass for this yet? My data still will not let me. I'm on a stand-alone with DISH network. :(

I seasoned pass it on my Dtivo. But, I had togo in manually and delete repeats. no guide info. At least it is now recognized as a series.

Yah, i always wondered, especially on WPT, the top players can see what others had, if they can find tells, when they bluffed, etc....
I guess the players aren't on TV enough to do any major damage.
Plus, the TV coverage probably gets them more $$$ in the prize pool, i think the World Series at least doubled the amount of players over the last year or 2, probably because of ESPN coverage of previous events.
I LOVE the stats, the KK = 85% probability over 99, or whatever, i think that helps a great deal to amateurs.

Anyone know what's going on with ESPN? They have shown part 6 two weeks in a row, even though the guide data for the second week says it is part 7. No sign of the real part 7.
Posted by: Turtleboy
I noticed that too. Now my Tivo thinks it recorded part 7, and then when the real part 7 comes on, I'm going to be screwed by the 28 day rule.
Posted by: JohnJr
My TiVo has had a hard time keeping up with this series too, however, I just look for the first recording I can get after 7:00 Tuesday (I guess 9 Eastern?) The one I caught this week was part 1 of the final table, episode 6 I believe, and next week I am expecting part 2.

The final 2 eps will be shown at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm Eastern on Tuesday. 7:00 will be part 6 (again), and 8:00 will be part 7.

You are right. 8:00 eastern for part 2 of the final table.

I'd be careful. The guides been way off vefore. sometimes the repeat is first sometimes the new episode. I'm just recording them both.

Me too. In fact I've manually recorded this show all along and have usually recorded two shows on Tuesday just to be safe.

As happy as I am that ESPN really went out of their way to put together a good production of the show, they have managed to seriously piss me off with their scheduling moves. When first announced, the network said that the show would air straight through, one episode a week, at 9 PM Eastern each week. Later, they made an unannounced shift in schedule to air Beg Borrow & Deal in the WSOP timeslot (only to abandon that after one week). And then they go and delay the final episode by one week, shifting time slots for good measure.
According to this excellent article (WARNING! -- discloses final winner!), ESPN's been getting 1.2 million viewers per episode on average. That's very strong results for basic cable. So you'd think they wouldn't keep jerking the audience around.

Ugh.. I just sat down to watch the final hour, to find out that ESPN royally screwed up guide data...
So, the final hour was on tonight, I checked ESPN's website, and their WSOP "page" doesn't give any additional info cept for "Tuesday's at 8PM". Anyone seen anything on when they'll repeat the last hour?
Posted by: mrpurple
My tivo shows none upcoming. Worse comes to worst I'll tape it for you.
Posted by: Fustanella
The 8pm final-final table came in fine last night, fwiw.
Moneymaker: what a great name for a high-stakes poker player. :)
Posted by: Herg
I too ended up missing the final episode due to the 28 day rule and found no repeat airings. If anyone finds a repeat, please let us know.
Also, thanks to everyone for keeping this thread free of spoilers.
Posted by: joeandmaria
I too missed it due to thinking it had already recorded this episode. Seems like this is happening more and more.
Posted by: JohnJr
I feel for you guys. My TiVo caught the final episode fine. I do not see any upcoming shows. What's up with that? Over the previous weeks they had re-broadcast the show at least 3 more times during the week on either ESPN or ESPN2! :(
-John
Posted by: DreadPirateRob
I somehow missed it too, even though I (thought) I set my DTivo to record every time it was on (even repeats). Bummer.
Good news, however, came from that Time article - at the end it says the showings will be repeated on ESPN during the fall months, which by my count, are only a month or so away.
